Top Gear: back in the US

Posted by The Mole at 4:56 pm on Wednesday October 8, 2008

The presenters might be out in Vietnam this week but that doesn’t mean the rest of the production team is lazing about smoking cigars and playing that Reliant Space Shuttle game on this website, oh deary me no.

For one thing, there’s all the stuff we’ve already shot for the next series, now being cut together in a furious fashion at the TG edit facility in London’s fashionable Soho.

Chief amongst these is another foreign jaunt in which Jeremy, Richard and James were dispatched to the United States to investigate a new generation of American muscle cars.

Obviously Detroit Iron enthusiast Hammond was beside himself with excitement at such a task but Jeremy arrived in deeply cynical mood whilst James just wished they were going to a place where you could get a decent cup of tea and some beef Hoola Hoops.

So you might be expecting another one of those items where Top Gear points out that all American cars are completely rubbish. And for once, you might be slightly wrong.

    to AmericanTifosi;
    and where do you propose they go? Jersey or New York where people drive in pimped out Lincoln Navigators because of an unverified sense of entitlement? Or perhaps California where people drive with a cellphone in one hand and a Starbucks Latte in the other? (for those numericaly challenged, 2-2=0)
    Oh, I know, Kansas? Or Nebraska where the possibilities of meeting another person on the road is about equal to the number of times you’ve actually satisified a woman…(or pick your preferred gender)

    To Top Gear…

    Look, Top Gear has three things it does…it does insane contests, drive insane cars and makes fun of everything American.
    Well…as an American, I have nothing to appologize for…

    Look TG, I for one am sick and tired of your American bashing…I love the show and I find Hamster to be a wonderful host (loved him in Brainiac)
    But Jeremy, you’re such an accomplished writer…I can’t believe that someone as obviously intelligent as you are stoops to name calling when you review an American car.
    All it is is that Americans want something different from their cars then what you want…as a way of proof, Americans tend to buy a lot of junk…we really aren’t very discerning…but you know what? we don’t buy British vehicles (the Land Rover doesnt’ count because people who purchase those are obviously brain damaged and only want the thing as a status symbol to show how much money they spent on a worthless vehicle)
    And as for the other cars you guys so highly acclaim…How many French cars are sold in the United States? *NONE* Italian (non-super cars)? *NONE* So, taking the “if a=b and b=c, then a must equal c” perspective…If Americans aren’t very discerning but they don’t buy British, Italian or French cars, then *THOSE* must be *REAL* junk! Think about it…Americans have a real thirst for vehicles…we buy them by the millions every year (7,667,066 in 2006 according to WikiPedia) So given that sheer number of vehicles that we consume every year, don’t you wonder why we do *NOT* purchase French or Italian cars? Or even British cars to that matter? We used to…Triumphs and MGs from England, Fiats and …well, fiats from Italy, Renaults and Peugots from France…we used to, but not any more…why? because when you talk about “Junk” these cars have their pictures next to this word in the dictionary! (there is a joke that goes “why don’t the British make a computer? Because they can’t figure out how to get it to leak oil”)
    So, bash on American cars if you like…but just remember where the real junk is…Vauxhalls, Renaults and Citroens…now those make us a rolling junk yard waiting to happen!!!

    @Tech_Ed:

    Most French / Italian / British car companies pulled out of Americashire are for the following reasons:
    - The US car buyer either buys for patriotism (domestic) or reliability (Honda, Toyota) but wont neccessarily buy a foreign car with, how can I put it, “character”? (eg. Sterling)
    - The cost of re-engineering a european market car to emissions / crash standards is too high (eg. Peugeot)
    - Citroen pulled out due to the NHTSA prohibiting cars with height adjustable suspension
    - Federalised bumpers and standardised headlights ruined the look of european cars in the 70s and 80s (eg. MGB, 5 E28)
    - The pound / euro is stronger than the dollar
    - European manufacturers tended towards sub 2.0 hatchbacks, whereas the US was in love with their V8 saloons. (although the UK recently seems to be in love with unneccessary urban assault vehicles)

    A few manufacturers, however, have hmm-ed and haa-ed about returning, such as Alfa and Peugeot, nothing concrete as such. The “BMW MINI” seems popular in these fuel efficiency times, though it is more a lifestyle vehicle than a proper economy car.

    Take heart Europeancarfan, the times are changing in the US of A. As are fuel prices are reaching European prices the automotive landscape is now leaning toward the small fuel efficient car. Ford is now seriously designing cars for a global market and we will be getting some of the better ford vehicles available only in Europe. As it stands now it is truly disgusting to see what the ford focus is like in this country compared to its European counterpart. I own a 2005 focus similar to what was available in Europe in ‘99. Don’t count me as buying it for patriotic reasons as it was made in Mexico, like most “American” cars. If I want to buy a car made in America, by American workers, I can choose from BMW, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai…

    Cheers

    You can go anywhere in the world and find what we in the southern US call ‘rednecks’. I think it was in London that someone was shot for wearing an Obama shirt.

    Anyway, the new Challenger is pretty sweet but not really till the ‘09. The ‘08 was rushed out and doesn’t even have a manual gear box. Hopefully they’ll review the ‘09. The new Charger is kinda lame for being a four door family car, but a lot of people need a four door family car and still want a Hemi V8. The V6 models are stupid and overpriced. It’s like people buying V6 Mustangs and thinking they’re bad ass.

    “They are all soo funny when it comes to America- bashing, it’s brilliant”

    How is it brilliant if:

    a) Its mostly based on factual lies about cars and TV fakery (like the famous Alabama “redneck” scene among many others…)

    b) Its mostly Clarkson STEALING jokes americans made about some aspects of their life and culture.

    How is it brilliant?

    I suspect that Clarkson will stop the heavy America-bashing simply because his boss, Alan Yentob, told him its not necessary anymore…and i better not expand on that…

    The jokes at America’s expense grow tiresome. If you live here, you realize that the places they chose to go in the previous America special were chosen because of the bad light it would paint us with. Most Americans don’t really want anything to do with Alabama, Miami, or New Orleans. Also, Florida is not all like Miami. The major metropolitan areas all have their own distinct character. Most are not riddled with violence, but Miami is. Miami is just like other large cities in that there are places you just don’t go if you don’t belong there, and are best avoided all together if possible. I am sure the same could be said for parts of London or Paris as well. Tampa and Orlando are quite different from Miami and more middle class.

    That being said, America also has it’s share of great driving roads with plenty of curves. The one that is most famous is called “The Tail of the Dragon”. It’s located in the Smokey Mountains in I believe North Carolina. I would love to see them go there and test some cars.

Heck, the thing doesn’t even have a manual option available at the moment (until 09′, you’re stuck with the four or five speed automatic). I’ve seen one in my local Dodge showroom, and while it’s beautiful on the outside, the interior is pretty bland and uninspired (par or the course, really). Overall, nothing to really get excited about.

    But, on the other hand, if they decide to test the new Corvette ZR-1… well, that will be one to remember, I feel.

    @EuropeanCarFan (#33):

    the cost of re-engineering is no longer an issue. the biggest difference between the new american focus and the european focus is the american focus gets a shitty interior.

    lots of people were fans of saab’s “character”.
    le car, not so much.

    lots of cars have adjustable ride height.

    the hideous americanized bumpers are a thing of the past.

    small cars are going to dominate the american market soon enough. of course, the mini is all about style and not practicality (at those asking prices, a very dumb purchase, in my opinion), but the smart car sold out from the first day it was here.

    fiat and alfa will be coming back soon, and i expect sales to be very, very good. i already want one of each.

    This sounds like ZR1 to me…

    — this might be follwed by:

    “Then again, rubbish!”. Which is usually true, even for that ZR1.

    I love the old American muscle cars. I’ve always been a fan of how cool they are to look at. I’ve never driven any though. The new Mustang Shelby is gorgeous and so is the new Dodge Charger and Jeep Wrangler. I can’t wait to see how the Charger drives when the new season starts. That’s another thing I have in common with Richard (Detroit Iron Enthusiasm), besides the fact that we’re born the same year, and Evil Keneval was both our hero.

    Maureen, come to the U.S. and drive our insane V8 Hemis, Z06s, and alike on our WIDE freeways and you’ll never go back to the U.K. Gas is down to $2.50 per gallon. Driving fast cars is rediculously cheap here. The roads, cars, and the weather in the U.K. are “rubbish”.

    I feel that Ford, GM and Chrysler are doing much better in quality, but they are still, in my opinion, way behind products from Japanese and European automobile manufacturers.
    From what I’ve read, the new Chevy Camaro is going to be quite good…even with the V6 engine.
    As a U.S. fan of the show, I’m happy they are returning to the States…because the last time Jeremy, Richard and James were here, they kind of lampooned the States from what I perceived as some uneducated locals assuming and jumping to the wrong conclusion. And, I have the feeling that the same is going to happen this time, and it doesn’t bother me because Jeremy, Richard and James do a fair job of lampooning pretty much anyone so I don’t take great offence to it.

I’m american and I still find their jokes funny and I do think our cars suck, I’m never gonna buy american when it comes to cars unless its Saleen. And if you people are gonna complain to top gear write them a letter or email them because they’re not gonna read your crap if its in the comments of some article because they dont read them the other viewers do. and if they do read it they still are not ganna listen because the show gets enough complaints as it is and they just make fun of the people that send them, they simply don’t care.
