Brawl in the USA

Posted by The Mole at 3:02 pm on Friday November 7, 2008

Jeremy and his 'VetteDid you see our post on Wednesday from the telly studio? If so, you’ll already know from our behind-the-scenes spying roughly what your Sunday night will be like.

TG exec producer Andy Wilman tells The Mole it’ll be a slightly more grown-up affair than last week’s show – so not aimed at seven-year-olds, but maybe 10-year-olds instead.

Anyway, at the moment, the telly boys are in the edit cutting together the final bits of Sunday’s show, and The Mole has seen a few more slices of the main feature: the Big USA Muscle Car Road Trip thingy.

And – to put in bluntly – it looks awesome: one of the slickest, most jaw-dropping films in the great history of Top Gear’s slick, jaw-dropping films.

It’s all in search of the answer to this important question: does American actually make any good cars? OK, so usually the answer is ‘Erm… nope’, but the big-bellied men of Detroit have been busy making some fairly promising-sounding cars recently.

Cars like the Corvette ZR1 (modelled by Jeremy in that shopping catalogue pose above), Dodge Challenger and Cadillac CTS-V.

So Richard, James and every trucker’s new favourite telly presenter got hold of one of each and embarked on a big American road trip, starting in San Francisco and ending up at the Bonneville salt flats – the very big, very flat place where land speed record cars go very fast. A Top Gear sort of place, in other words.

Thing is, the end of the Big USA Muscle Car Road Trip thingy is being kept firmly under wraps, so The Mole wants your opinion: which way do you reckon this one’s going to go? You’ll already know that Richard is a paid-up member of the old-school American muscle club (sounds a bit dodgy, that), but will any of the trio of V8s actually impress Jeremy?

Or will he just give them a proper kicking?

I think Jezza will fall in love with the Corvette. I mean, he does like the standard C6 version, but this ZR1 has that 638bhp supercharged V8. And we already know what he’s like with overpowered engines…

I am sure , the boys will come through with another masterpiece of on screen genius and I make a prediction that the Cadillac will win! And that the truck driving Stig last week was actually a thin person with many layers of other clothes under his racesuit?

Sounds like it will be a bit of a “porsche” argument with Richard arguing with Jeremy whilst James looks on with a wry smile on his face.Should be magic so!!!

p.s. Is Richard still in a state of “porsche hypnosis” these days or did someone remember to reverse the spell?!

Jeremy will secretly like the ZR1 but complain about the interior. But the Cadillac has the same engine (with a bit less power) and an amazing interior, so Jezza will love the CTS-V.

Honestly, the ZR1 is an amazing machine (I’ve driven it), a great value, and the interior really isn’t all that bad, but I’d be greatly surprised if Clarkson admitted to liking it. He might even go so far as to say “I want to like it, but…” but that’ll be it.

Oh and as for the Dodge Challenger? It’s a piece of junk. Pretty from a distance, but pretty nasty up close. Not to mention it’s just too big to have any fun driving it. A man of Richard’s stature is going to struggle even more so.

From reading the Sunday Times, I think that the CTS-V will be well liked. ZR-1 is supposed to be comfortable, so perhaps that will be well liked also. The only question is the Challenger, which is a good looking car if not anything else.

I’m off to one of the best automotive museums in Pennsylvania and perhaps in the entire world now, what an excellent weekend this will be!!!!

Simply cannot wait for this film. I had a look at the Corvette C6 earlier this year and instantly fell in love (to the extent that I was threatening to remortgage my house while I was still in the showroom, and I eventually had to be evicted with a crowbar). This from a woman who normally dreams of restoring old Triumphs and Hillmans! I have no idea what that car did to me. I suspect I may get very excited watching the ZR1 so shall be watching on Sunday with spare underwear at the ready ;)

My guess is that they’ll like the power, but will find the interiors rather cheap, and the handling not quite up to snuff with the european and japanese cars, although I bet they will find that the handling has improved from past generations of American cars. I bet that they will also comment on the fact that if you give similarly sized engines to any european car company they would come up with significantly more horsepower then what the americans can develope. And they’ll last longer too :P

that ZR1 has massive power, so i expect a lot of Jeremy’s classic POWEEEEERR
also, the Caddy is rubbish, and i think it’s been designed by someone with no joints in his arm, and the Chevy, well it’s a Chevy so i’d expect it to be as well built and as advanced as a Romanian road (those of you who have been to Romania know what i mean)

the challenger is a retro muscle car built to a budget, and like most American budget muscle cars it goes like hell in a straight line and then wets it self at the thought of a corner. the corvette is leaps and bounds better than the challenger in almost every way possible. I’m not to sure about the caddy, it probably will be pretty good, but if were going good old fashioned muscle cars, shouldn’t the new cammaro be involved? In any rate I still cant wait to see what the guys have to say about some good old fashioned American muscle.

DARN YOU GUYS!!! You came all the way across the planet to right in my backyard and didn’t even tell me!! I am a HUGE fan of the show so it pains me that I didn’t get to see you here in California. The picture in this post is “Twin Peaks” in San Francisco, a vista that looks over the whole city. I have been there many times and it is wild to think the top gear presenters have as well now. Also, just because I live in this area doesn’t mean I am a crazy, and doesn’t mean I love nascar the muscle cars. Actually, I am very against San Fran, take f1 over nascar anyday, and refuse to own a car that isn’t european. Enough with the stereotypes! Next time you guys come out here, which will probably be never, give us a shout!

Who bloody cares ! GM and Chrysler will probably both be bancrupt by Monday afternoon .By the time that you export any of these and put in a right hand drive they are so expensive you should just go buy the Mercedes that you really wanted in the first place . There is no such thing as the American muscle car anymore , they are all crap and plastic, designed for the NAASCAR fan who can only turn left .

I wish the new Camaro was out when they made this film, for two reasons. They could dump the Challenger for it, making it an all-GM affair, and although that sounds like plugging, I think they make better cars than Ford or Chrysler/Dodge. It’s like they’re the only American car company willing to evolve with the rest of the world’s motor industries. Also, Richard said last series – “What if the Camaro isn’t rubbish?” and the other two said no, that would be fun to see.

Another thing I’ve just realised, the Challenger, driven by Lofty Hammond, is the least powerful. What on earth will James do with 550bhp!? And, judging by the trailer, he drives a Zonda F convertible later in the series!? WHAT!?! Awesome! Can’t wait!

They could have added a Camaro, Mustang(gt500 in a bullit edition maybe), Viper ACR.

That’s the funny about american car makers, they might be dying bleeding money, but they still manage to deliver all these cool cars.

They maybe are not the best cars in the world, but they keep that american feeling, that gorgeous look and coolnes only a muscle car can deliver.

I’m pretty sure Hammond is gonna love the Dodge and Vette as he loves em big ol american muscle cars.

Bout clarkson, he’s usually not a big fan of em. But i think the Vette should definitely impress him. It does look like Chervorlet have finally made a decent attempt at building a proper sports car that can match up to the performance of the Ferraris and Lambos.

Its not really a musclecar though…It’s a true sports car and will outclass and certainly outrun the other two. I’m jealous though as I won’t see this show till next year in Canada and my wife is over at her mothers in Christchurch so she will be tuning in and I’ll have to get the story from her till I can see it.

Will bet that James makes a mess of his pants when he drives the Caddy. Jeremy will love the ZR-1 but say that the interior is rubbish and that all American cars are garbage, though he will secretly love it. They will agree that the Challenger is the best looking, but will say that it is under powered and the suspension is too soft.

Trust me the Caddy will smoke any 4 door production car that the Germans make, plus Jeremy actually likes it, and admitted it.

Winner is the 556hp Caddy CTS-V.
    Second ZR-1
    Third Challenger

Am I the only one that finds it odd that the last time the boys were in the states
    James drove a Caddy,
    Hamster drove a Dodge, and
    Jeremy drove a Chevy?

    I didn’t enjoy ep 2 yesterday(sunday), they were holding back on everything funny even though most of the time they were at the plain dessert(not needing to over-fear the police), and they even cut out that 1 in a million years chance, of seeing captain slow making jeremy eat dust, he he he he he ………., but then they became stupid when they were in the city, and its then they wanted fun, and drew the attention of the police to them; they showed far less of the scenery then we normally would see;
    the music was not heart-pumping and fitting;

it was just utter crap it made me wimp!
I don’t know what it’s goin on in their heads, did bird flu get them or what’s the reason they miss to keep the winning formula together,
i mean what loony-toon approved tha?

It’s almost like they ”Want” to be utter rubish, rubish in it’s truest sense!

    I don know

I agree with the above, the lack of humour in the last episode was almost a joke in itself, (probably deliberately so), but I wouldn’t be surprised if the americans got a bit petit about the teams last escapade there, mind you, it makes more sense to mock their arrogance than for them to mock us, when our country has done nothing wrong except given them the language they speak today, and the names for many areas of there country New England, New York, etc

  147. Euro cars = better said...
Monday November 10, 2008 at 9:34 am Link to comment Report comment

Actually to be honest who cares…There is no reason for us not to be able to mock the Americans, its only because there isolationist so they take it too personally. Trouble is, there too many things to go on, such as their inability to point out France on a map. Their general rudeness. (And obviously) there inability to take a joke…So why is it then that they are allowed to make every bady in their films english, and we’re not allowed to satirise them, when actually most of the things we criticise have an element of truth in them.

    good said!

Not making any jokes, was a joke itself, but as we all no, looooooooooooooooooooonnn g jokes ARE NOT Funny!

If T-Gear has problem with re-creating tha winning formula, all you need to do is to watch series 10, series 11 with JC in a fast car documenting about it, and hamster and Slow playing catch up using public transport.

I find the bit at series 2 with – the one …
with tha drowned hamsta – was a good one, basically testing Theories out related to emergencies in a car, and finding out for the public what is the right thing to do + explanation & demonstration, naturally.

    then series 4 , the one ….with all the poo;
Why no? we all shi virtually never ending?! making money out of it is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
    he he he…..hahahahahaah…oho hahaha….

ehheeeem!, yeah, so on the scientific part u don’t want to miss out, seriously, using solar, bike-pedal-charging ect. examples, building it urself, trying stuff out; you could win awards if u get it right.

Of course the tire smoke, never forget tha, test both normal cars, and supercars at every episodes, i lik the ”abarth” it was cool, faster and more powerful than ” dE MiNi ”

Things like Sandblast from series 5 testing cars and there agility and gripiness, brilliant

then last, army, the phisical comparison, between a very good car that specifically is good in one or two areas, like reaction, fast acceleration, power-distribution & balance ect.
    ex. series 6 – Tank v Range

using does winning formulars in balance, not too much not too many(concerning Quantity) but squeezing 150% out of 100%, will make every episode a success.

That was just a short explanation(like a hand-drawn house without ruler), not lenghty but presents the main elements.

Keep an eye on the, Top Gear Racers -TGR

In a country that produces Land Rover and Jaguar. I am amazed that they can put down the better American cars at all. Land Rovers have what can only laughingly be referred to as ergonomics and the plastic is made from old tooth brushes. Cars like the Viper and Challenger are too large for most British streets. This is why they purpose build cars for the streets of our elder sister. But when raced in real world Continent to Continent conditions like IMSA sorry but Viper finished 1,2,3,5 and 7 against the European Rival. In most cases cars that retail at 4 or 5 fold.
Say what you wamt but if anyone out there knows of a Triumph, MG or Jag that hasn’t had an electrical fire count yourself lucky!

Am I the only one who really wants to see where the ZR1 places against the other cars on the board? I’d love it if it came close to the Enzo. All the better that it makes it’s power with a modified pickup truck engine and not some exotic hard to maintain bespoke powerplant. Compared to a Ferrari, a Vette is a car that won’t ruin you with high maintenance costs. I also fail to see how a Corvette is any more vulgar than a Ferrari or Lamborghini.

I would say driving a Fiat 500 was as down to earth as we’d want Top Gear to be. And talking about the Renault Twingo is within the grasp of the everyman.

Anyone complaining that a performance car show is constantly talking about perfomance cars has to remenber that the reason they drive cars like that is:

1)Because it’s fun for them and they want to enjoy their work

and 2) So people like me who can’t afford to buy or hire any of the exotic cars featured, get to see and live the experience in some small way.

I don’t scorn the guys for driving the ultimate cars the world has to offer, i thank them for letting me know they exist in the first place.

From time to time they do note ‘real’ cars of interest – hammond driving the pink micra cc for example,

but really, if you want a less entertaining show (or factual when in america) and one with a less polished feel to it watch Fith Gear and complain about how there isn’t enough comedy in that show.

Leave Top Gear alone, because they ARE balancing the Cars with the comedy and the facts with the entertainment, and doing it well.

I Agree mostly with clarksonknite, T-Gear don’t ever switch up to 60% Normal cars, and 40% Super cars; stay always at 70-80% Super, and the rest normal.

Yeah he is right, if the TGRs wouldn’t drive this hot-spankingly fast cars and show them to us, most of us wouldn’t even know they exist!

Serious, don’t change to some stupid 100% factual car show or anywhere near that.

Anyone who wants some boring show, can line themselves with all the other 90 year olds watching Fifth Gear!

The TGRs surely did the boring american trip on purpose to show us, how boring it could turn out if they were to leave out the flamboyant cars, and the crazy races and stunts, with no adreneline, no fast heart rush; boring and slow as Fifth Gear.

    END OF DEBATE

U can put this debate in a archive file and say, uuups, it ”Accidently” landed in the shredder.

    Don’t become Fith-Gear.

If u want to show us i bit of factual stuff, what u can do is to show us more clearly some vids and photo shoots of the car exterior interior, for example, on ep2 I didn’t see the back-seat of the Fiat 500 Abarth properly to judge how big it is in reality, and i would like to hear ”all the exciting” obtions you can have with that car.

And that’s the Factual Thing done,

    Case closed

I am thinking of buying a Mercedes Benz 1.8 SLK Kompressor Convertable on manual.

    Body:
    Long Nose
    2 seater
    Convertible
    Bucket seats

    Engine :
    Power – 184 bhp
    Torque – 184
    Turbo-charged
    Direct Injection
    Manual

    Performance:
    Top speed 147 MPH
    Fuel economy 36 mpg
    0-60 = 7.60 secs

    Fuel tank 60 Litres, 60 Litres – 16 Gallons;
16 Gallons x 36 mpg = 576 miles before fuel stop. London to Oslo 1.320 Miles, that’s 40% of the Journey

    Cost : £28,875

What you guys think? is there anything better for this price range in the merc’s list?

Basically I search for a hurt pumping, road licking, Power-insane, roaring, drifting, speedy roadster convertible Rural Speed Demon.

So a car for fun, scaring the living Daylights out of me with its ground shaking rooarrr and heart-stopping speed.

    Suggestions?

    sorry, the exact name is
    Mercedes Benz 1.8 SLK 200 Compressor Convertible 2d 1796cc

    A good contender is :
Mercedes Benz 2.1 TD C220 CDI Elegance Estate 5d 2148cc

    Body:
    4 seater
    Convertible
    Long back

    Engine:
    Power: 150 bhp
    Torque: 295
    Super-charged
    Multi-point Injection
    Manual

    Performane:
    Top-Speed: 139MPH
    Fuel Economy: 46mpg
    0-60 MPH = 8.50

    Cost 27,170

not bad, is just too long, and is a 4 seater instead of 2; with a 2 seater there’s less weight and better balance when drifting.
although the SLK easily can over-steer if under bad control, its a challenger, for realy good drivers who can feel how much to give, when to give it and how to tackle the control problems, and get the car under full control.

    A proper car, for proper drivers;
Drivers that can tell the difference between 2 sugars and 3 sugars, the difference between 0-60 in 8.80 secs and 0-60 in 7.70 secs!

    Suggestions?

American musclecars may be rubbish to the three wiseguys, but does anyone really think they can get anything even remotely resembling those cars at the same sticker price anywhere in Europe?

Musclecars are just that – cheap thrills. who cares about the plastic? And those who say that today’s musclecars can’t perform when it comes to corners and curves hasn’t owned one of today’s American musclecars.

Yeah your right, in the UK you would struggle to find a car in the ‘muscle’ genre for the cheapness of the cars they drove in episode 2,

it would cost us around £40 grand for the challenger alone, which is near as damn it double the list price in america

the cheap thrills thing is in no debate, the conclusion on the show was a positive one saying that all 3 cars were good cars.

the problem is we’d have to come to america to enjoy them, because the fuel costs here would be unbearable, i have family over in the US, and a 3.0 v6 is considered a small engine, over here for general runabouts the engines are much smaller with BHP outputs of around 100 – 200, most people don’t go beyond the 2.0 four cylinders

so in conclusion the reason why we bang on about interior quality so much is because we have to, there’s nothing else to compensate for the lack of it.

and since we live in a country with much smaller, winding streets, handling is massively imprtant to us too, we don’t usually have the mass expanse of long wide straight roads.

it will reach the point where we all meet in the middle somewhere with car production, similar goals on economy and quality however i suspect even then the ride set ups will be different for each country based on the terrain needs and driving styles.

Is it me?…. or is the Hamster’s fondness for 1980’style coral necklaces troubling anyone else? And is it me?…or is Hamster growing his hair and wearing battered leather jackets in order to look like captain slow?

    Fastkrusty@177:

Does this mean that pretty soon we’ll start seeing JM with more closely cropped, spiky hair and “product” and tooth whitener?

This is starting to remind me of the rather regrettable film Freaky Friday.

Listen to the episode properly, then you will find out that Hammond & May were wearing that for a bet, as similar did clarkson on ep 1 with his shiny dark night-sky upper sleeping pijama .

I was wrong. I had written in other posts that I would love to see the boys drive some American Muscle but they would just hate the cars before they even drove them. I particularlty thought this would be the case after a earlier poor reveiw they gave of the CTS. – I had driven that care before and thought was fantastic and had won COTY from Motor Trend.

I guess maybe I was half right, Capt Slow didn’t like the Caddie at first sight, but in the end they were fair and it was by far my favorite episode, bar none. Loved the salt flats

I think james will like the Caddy, he likes big, slow cars, Jeremy will like the Corevette and Richard will like the Challenger.
