Not so Captain Slow

Posted by The Mole at 9:00 pm on Sunday November 9, 2008

So the second show of the new series has burst onto your screens and, compared to last week’s show, it hasn’t – fingers crossed – upset anyone. Unless lots of people have decided to complain that it was unusually about cars for once.

But the biggest shock about Sunday’s Top Gear wasn’t the lack of complaints, or that nothing fell over, exploded or crashed through a brick wall. No, it was the sight of Captain Slow being… not slow.

No one was more shocked than Jeremy as the Cadillac CTS-V speared past him with James at the wheel, suddenly gripped with an uncommon love of what he might previously have called ‘ungentlemanly driving’.

So what’s going on here? Well, we reckon two things are to blame. Firstly, his previous mission to max the Bugatti Veyron which we suspect gave him a taste for velocities in excess of the steady 49mph he might normally enjoy in his Panda. And secondly, the day he spent with Jackie Stewart which gave him the instruction and encouragement he needed to unlock the inner speed demon.

But if you thought the sight of a slightly excitable Captain Slow gunning his Caddy was strange and alarming, just wait until next week’s show when James goes to Finland to find out why the locals are so good at motorsport and gets his hands dirty again with some proper wheelsmithery. At this rate we may have to seriously consider changing his nickname…

James was actually amazing this week :) If anyone does read this (slightest chance in the world)(okay no chance), then tell him he made the show!

I laughed ALOT when Jeremy drove off in the Winnebego with Richard in bed and stuff. Was that set up or where they actually asleep/”on the throne” < haha :)

Im glad Clarkson clarified the lap time for the GT2!

I was wondering if richard had REALLY bought a challenger and i guess it’s true. Why doesn’t he just keep it and import it over? if he drove through the UK in it he’d be loved by every petrolhead in the country (if not already)!

Or he can donate it to me. I’m not joking – I NEED a Dodge Challenger in my life. :P

well what a show! That little Fiat 500, whilst i absolutely hate the styling and i think it looks about as good as a brick, i love its gutsy engine and boy does it go!

The road trip was, in typical Top Gear style, fantastic, i actually think the show was funnier with the boys trying to be factual. That challenger was brilliant!

Forgive me for posting this here too but I didn’t want those in power (Hi Andy) to miss my praise after last weeks furore.

“Fantastic episode. Great car review. A star in a car who could talk cars and the trio just being petrolheads.

No obvious fakery. No stupid “oh wont this be funny” japes. Petrolheads being petrolheads. And three good friends being good friends, which shone through and made the show far more entertaining that over-scripting could.

Brilliant. Best episode in ages. Make them exactly like this please.”

And if you’re stuck with that Challenger, give me a email.

    Fantastic!

I’d go for that Challenger SRT8, but my Mini barely fits in the garage, so a Dodge stands no chance…

Actually if ’twere my own hard earned, I would certainly by a ZR-1, in a proper loud shade of blue. Did you see Jezza drift round that hairpin? It looked smoother going round a corner sideways than normally! The speed and angle was so constant and perfect and- oh god, I need money for one of those!!

But if I can’t get enough money, I think I’ll be fine with the Abarth 500. What insurance group is it?

I’ll give him 50p for the challenger, although that’s probably a bit much in the current climate *looks hopeful*
I’m gonna say I miss the more ‘messing around’ style TG. 10 minutes of ‘I got the car a bit faster than last time I tried’ isn’t that great. Having said that, was still good.
I do prefer the shows with shorter, snappier clips and more action.
    Look forward to next week.

Great episode/roadtrip. Even though I’m one of the female non-petrolheads who watches it, I did enjoy the roadtrip including James’ moaning. Was nice to see Cap’n Slow in Cap’n go very fast mode (roll on Zonda v Veyron, I’m absolutely looking forward to that) for a change as well as the boys doing something they enjoy. I hope that James didn’t loose too much money or sleep in that casino. I was sort of on the edge of my seats, hoping during those speed tests.

Oh if Jeremy is reading this; Please leave picking on James out of your road/tracktests thankyou!

Oh yeah, and what about Will Young as a guest? He was surprisingly cool.

I was expecting a manufactured pop star to be a bit Americanised, a bit flash and tooth whitening, and tbh a bit camp. But actually he’s really cool, and that house show did actually sound like it would be a good show. And a good time too.

Another fantastic episode. I’m with James May hating that Fiat 500. Don’t like them at all. Didn’t like James Cadallac very much, Jeremys Corvette was a beauty but Richards Dodge. Well I quite liked that :P I’d like an american muscle car and those American Government with their visa’s. Idiots :P Being stopped by the police twice was funny especially after setting all the car alarms off. Fantastic episode all round and loving Top Gear for it’s factual and not entertaining manner in delivering us a car report….

If you can manage to think one up, id really enjoy seeing another TG transcontinental race, maybe Jeremy’s Mercedes CLK Black vs. Hammond and May on a combo of trains, planes and boats. first one to some deserty country. with camels or something.

Ship the car to the UK, as you did with Oliver. Register and SVA it, put a rear foglight on and realign the headlights.

Put it on a UK based arm of an online auction site that rhymes with eday, would raise a tidy amount.

The main thing about this episode was….balance. There’s just enough car talk (the Abarth) and lust for speed (The Salt Flats) on one side, balanced by just the right amount of cocking around on the other.

And folks, someone should have told the boys that Vegas and Reno are two of the WORST places to horse around in, if you’re trying to cause havoc on the streets. The cops in BOTH places are very, very, rigid, just as the security guards in the casinos are. They want NO trouble to spoil the gamblers’ attention to the fruit salad and/or cards in front of them.

As far as Clarkson saying the US has produced three cars that are ready for the civilized world (assuming that means England), I’m afraid he’s wrong again. All three are too large, too thirsty and just too flashy. But I’ll tell you one thing…over here they’re a hoot to have and I’d kill to have any of them.

one complaint: WHY THE HELL WEREN’T ANY OF THE CARS BROUGHT BACK FOR THE STIG TO TRASH?!?!?

Stop and think about it…James May OVERTAKES Jeremy Clarkson, while the latter is driving a lighter and more powerful car and then — pay close attention to this — STAYS ahead of Clarkson.

God bless whosoever invented the Internet that us benighted Americans could see the episode sometime before June of 2011.

Not that I’m interested in muscle cars, but I could be talked into the Hammondmobile. Pity it’s an automatic.

    Still, best show in epochs.

P.S. Am I being hopelessly American in not having the slightest idea what the controversy over Episode 1 was all about?

As for the episode, I loved it. It’s nice to see James is now starting to have some fun behind the wheel too! After all, that’s what cars with ridiculous power and ridiculous price tags are all about.

Didn’t care for the Will Young bit, he’s not funny, big or clever. A true Z list celeb.

The American road trip was very good. I didn’t think they would be able ot make much of the Bonnyville Salt Flats but them aiming for a target speed was a great idea. Last week got a bunch of laughs (as did the last trip to the USA), but I’m glad that Top Gear returned to form this week. The show is at its best when I watch the boys doing something and think, “Man, I wish I could do that, and if I did, I’d remember it for the rest of my life.” Burning up semi trailers and smashing pianos stacked on porn would be funny for a few days (and maybe a few stories), but a couple years ago I drove an RX-7 on the Salt Flats, and I can genuinely say it was one of the best days of my life.

As close to perfect an episode of Top Gear as I’ve seen in a long time. Proper car content (both the 500 review and the road trip), a genuinely entertaining SIARPC – and I have no idea who Will Young is – great filming, the blokes doing what they do best without the hindrance of such heavy scripting… beautiful filming, a properly involving finale to the film. Top Gear – Ambitious AND Successful! Who’d have thought it? I could go on, but I fear if I do, nobody will be able to get their head through the hangar door on Wednesday, which would be bad.

Excelent show as ever. very factual and not at-all entertaining.

and Will Young’s a petrolhead. who’da thought eh? and Jezza seems to be more in touch with his inner Lawrence-Lewellyn-Bowen than I suspect anyone outside of the TG inner-sanctum – and his family – would ever have guessed. what’s next? Captain slow driving fast? oh wait… he did.

also laughed so hard when Jeremy started driving about in the winebago while the other two were… otherwise occupied. in a factual way of course.

By the way.. did my eyes decieve me, or was the little 500 above an Elise on the power-board? amused me that did.

Again, and I’m sure you’re pretty bored of hearing this by now, well done for another great show!

But I’m afraid that I have to agree with James on this – the Caddy did look pretty dull. The styling was rubbish and the interior didn’t look like anything special. And, let’s face it, since Cadillac produced the terribly unsuccessful Cimarron in ‘82 most Caddies have been quite ugly (the Allanté, the Brougham and the ‘96 Deville to name a few).

Out of all three, I’d much rather have the Challenger mainly because it’s the only one which retains its “muscle car” characteristics, looking mean and hunkered down, the small headlights hidden away in the grill and the infamous racing stripes along the hood and roof. Ok, so it might be made of plastic but at least its made of good quality plastic unlike JC’s Corvette…

Looking forward to seeing what they trio will be up to next week!

Get out of the ditch! Three witty ,talented presenters who can be hilarious with a running gag (usually at each others expense) do not need to drag the bottom of ‘easy humor’ (ie blatant sexual references and innuendo)to get a laugh! Come on guys, use your talent well, make us laugh, show us cars, meet your challenges…we love it all…but don’t drag us off course! Stay on the tarmac and out of the gutter!

Why is the show more and more focusing on the characters of the presenters? There’s no need to keep mentioning that James May is slow or not slow, or that Jeremy likes power or not. Their characters speak for themselves, that is what I like about the show.

Thank you, lads. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

After last week’s episode, which was so awful and utterly contemptuous of its audience that it made me want to harm myself, I was a little worried about the direction of this series. It looked like Series 8-9 redux. Then, as in the previous three series, you pulled an absolute classic out of your arse and made me a believer once more. Some hyperactive stylistic idiocy notwithstanding, it was a reminder of why I fell in love with this show in the first place: it was a love letter to the automobile. It was our three heroes experiencing the best of what cars can give us, and expressing it in such a way as to make us feel as though we’ve experienced it, too.

After blasting you for the horrible swing away from cars and towards pseudo-sitcom reality “entertainment” last week, at the expense of your longest-suffering and most loyal fans, it’s only fair that I take the time to tell just what an extraordinary job you did with this week’s episode. Keep it up, lads. And from a long-suffering petrolhead nostalgic for the pre-Series 8 days…thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Can’t count how many times I’ve done the same when I was still living in Vegas. You were awesome in the mountains of Nevada, awesome getting the one-up on Jeremy about his Merc, and awesome on the salt flats. I don’t know if it because the this weeks show incorporated genuine good looking muscle cars that we can all afford, or because the guys really bounced off each other in this episode, but I came away thinking that this was the best Top Gear I’ve ever seen (and thats quite a few!). Why does Jeremy always push on the back of a Vette’s rear bumper and proclaim that it’s flimsy?

It’s designed that way to absorb low speed rear impacts (backing into something, or a car bumping in to it) and not receive damage.

julian comment 63 – the music was composed by Ludovico Einaudi. Once you listen to one of his albums (I recommend Divenire), you will see how many TV programs these days use his music. The bloke must be loaded with all the royalties!!!

In addition, the show was quality this week. The stuff with the lorries (while funny) was a bit Ant and Dec Saturday night takeaway type stuff because, while they were trying to highlight how difficult it was to be a lorry driver, they know absolutely nothing about them which just made it see like a gimmick. The road trips are always really funny and this one was no exception. What got into May!?! Overtaking?? Never thought I’d see the day. I’m surprised Jeremy never pointed out the Fiat 500 beat the Lotus Elise; that’s some car. And what is it with some of the people they meet? Do the cameras just attract the strangest people in the world? “Are you John Lennon?”, what sort of question is that.

    So funny. Roll on Sunday.

Fantastic. Genuine belly laughs when a) Capt Slow ended up in the ditch “I over corrected”; b) ‘pointing’ at the copper; c) ‘are you John Lennon?’ and d) the apology for not letting us know the GT3’s time. Great, great stuff. And that’s before even getting to the automotive stuff.

And please continue to ignore the pathetic moaners out there. They must watch each week just in case they might see something that upsets them – with OFCOM’s complaint line pre-programmed into their phones. How pathetic!

TG is the best show on TV.

NO MORE LONG INTERVIEWS WITH STUPID PEOPLE!!!! Clarkson is not the only person who prefers classic rock to the white noise that is considered music today!

… I honestly never thought as James May as slow. I always thought he was given the worst cars… like on purpose. like Ryan Styles was always handed the /worst/ parts on the American version of Whose Line is It Anyways. Seriously, looking back through all of the episodes I’ve seen, James always seems to show up in a lower class car.

    ***

Also, what many of the the RIAA produces today isn’t music. There’s a reason Amazon.com and Pepsi are /still/ partnering on PepsiStuff, and there’s a reason why Apple Itunes has rocketed to the number one music reseller position.

Most bands, today, simply can’t come up with more than one or two good songs… if that. Most albums sold in stores today have one or two radio singles, then 8 or 9 “filler” tracks that just should have never been written or played.

The only… genre… and that’s not even the right term since the RIAA pigeonholed it as a genre, that typically avoids the 1-good-song-8-bad-songs trend is the so called “Christian Music” segment. Seriously, go find a copy of anything from Idle Cure, Liaison, White Cross, WhiteHeart, Petra, DC Talk (excluding Supernatural), Newsboys, OC SuperTones, Micheal W. Smith, Steven Curtis Chapman, Superchi[k],or just the entire Frontline Music Group catalog for that matter… then compare the number of “quality” tracks versus the pap that is served by RIAA members today. The ratio is astoundingly different. My personal opinion is that because “Christian” artists aren’t going out of their way to be obscene, vulgar, depressing, obnoxious, or whatever you want to call it, they put more of their talent into the music.

Classic Rock of old is very much like that as well. Case in point would be Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” You listen to it live… and it feels… emotional. I’ve heard remakes of “Simple Man” that are technically excellent, but just completely skip out on the emotion in the voice.

only the other day, I was comlaining about the lack of conflict between factual and entertaining broadcasting and they fixed, unfortunately I’ve been struck ill, but I’ve spent my time reading a couple of Jeremy’s and James’ books from the library and I know why Jeremy is always picking on James. James was build as Jeremy’s replacement on old style top gear, thus James doesn’t have to prove his worth to the bbc by being stupidly fast, where as Jeremy left and had to come grovelling back to the bbc, so he does.

I’ve only just caught up on it! Was seriously impressed by James’ driving – always knew he had it in him – but my respect vanished this morning because a certain someone was papped in the Sun towing a caravan with his old Rolls…and the BBC are saying it was “in a private capacity”…tut tut, James. Your street cred from the speed is disappearing fast…

Oh and I would never have expected anything as mature from Jezza as an apoligy. so well done.
I did love the challenger the best though. In a factual way of course.

Stopped watching the show yonks ago no ones allowed an opinion except that pratt clarkson, could someone explain what the shows all about ime an ex professinal driver (packed up due to all you pratts on the road)& ive never once seen any cars driven like this lot do, whats the point? you dont chuck rollers in to bends like they do & ive never yet seen any of these luxury cars doing doughnuts, about the only ones ive seen driving like this are the kids in older beemers, hot hatches that are passed there sell by date, & half you lot after a night out on the piss, saw the american episode what a load of crap i dont know which engine option the challenger had but considering shorthouse has owned american muscle before he should have been able to do better than that, & if i remeber rightly clarksons vet was a manual thats the easiest thing in the world to do a long smokey burnout in, lets hope this show goes the way of lots of others in this present climate, IN THE BIN & no i dont own a 998cc econo car my daily ride is your normal middle price saloon but my summer weekend/ fine weather ride is a american 1969 plymouth with a warmed over big block that reguarly gets thrashed up santa pod, thankfully not much euro tin gets up there to the meets i attend otherwise ide have to give that up as well, long live overhauling, barry white customs, & shows like that not the crap we put on over here. you’llhave a nice day.
