Bid for a Stig lap

Posted by The Mole at 1:58 pm on Wednesday November 12, 2008

The StigSome say Pudsey didn’t have that eye patch until he met the Stig, but that can’t be true. After the Children in Need people called the Top Gear office asking for cash-raising help, we offered a passenger lap with our tame racing driver.

Truth is, it’ll probably just be another quick lap to him, but if you fancy bidding for the chance to ride with him, get onto the Children in Need eBay auction page.

When we last looked, the highest bid already topped £8,000 – having almost doubled since this morning. And the auction only started yesterday.

What with that and Hammond’s Quattro drive with Ashes to Ashes star Philip Glenister we’re definitely doing our bit. Find out about how to do yours at the Children in Need website.

But, seriously, £8,000? How high will it go? And what would you be prepared to pay?

Higher than most of the fans would be able to pay for, sadly. I would have preferred it to have been raffled – I bet you’d still have made the same money, and everyone would have had an even chance.

(And I think the CinN would have made the same money overall).

Like the thought that you wouldn’t have Stiggy delivered though: “local pickup only”

Good luck to whomever wins. It won’t be me. Money’s tight right now. Sorry.

It doesn’t say what the experience will be in. I’ll die laughing if the winner (who i suspect will probably pay about 10k since everybody knows that the best way to bid is to wait til the last 30 seconds of the auction…) ends up being driven around in a Perodua or something.

Could we decide it via vote? I vote Ariel Atom. it’s a two-seater (just about) and as Clarkson found out it’s face-bendingly good fun. See if health and safety will allow it without a helmet for the full effect. :P

Yeah, I like the raffle idea. Kinda sucks that only the rich can participate.

How about a barter?? I’ll give you 5 pounds for a lap without the Stig and I’ll drive. :D

I’d love the chance to go on a lap with Stiggy as would most people! but like most people I’m not that flush and I’m on the waiting list to see the show. A raffle would be a much better idea, say £5.00 per ticket, they’d raise far more that Mr. Moneybags pays for the lap.

    Love Series 12,

I also agree that maybe a raffle would appeal to a larger audience, and could have the potential to raise more money, but then again I’m not aware of how complicated it is to set up one in the UK (as I’m writing from the other side of the pond).

I’m a big fan of TG, but if I was going to spend that much money, I’d rather attend several courses at a top level driving/racing school. I might not get driven by The Stig, but I could at least hope I’m coached buy one of The Stig’s many distant relatives.

If i had the chance, and if i could afford it, id bid anything for that lap! Id let my Missus teach the Stig a thing or 2! I tell ya, she’s the fastest MUMMA on the school run! Any parent knows that’s some feat! LOL!!!

In a related vein, I’d give +/- $10,000 to give the Stig a ride around the track.

It is a lot of money but it’s for charity so I hope the fool bidding this much will continue doing it!

I would love to do it but I am a poor wee lass:(

If it didn’t cost so much to get to the UK from America, I’d bid.

Hmm… How about combining the suggestions a bit? A raffle to bid for 5+1 rounds of you doing the driving around Dunsfold Park, but coached by the Stig? The organisers could also throw in an introductory lap by the Stig as well, though. (Got the inspiration from the Sir Jackie Stewart outing with James May)

The vehicle of choice would be the Ariel Atom, if the folks at Health and Safety allow without a helmet. Or it could still be done in the Reasonably-priced Car.

As for the raffle, it should be sold in single denominations (eg. £5). But the more you buy, the the higher your chances of winning.

Yeah you should have done a raffle, like £5-£10 a ticket then everyone can have a crack at it!!

But if its some rich snob i hope Stig makes them shit themselves!! If not enjoy it whoever wins it!!

8 grand for a lap is a bit much by anybody’s standards, considering £100 will let you thrash a ferrari or 911 turbo around donington for 3 laps.

So it’d have to be the Atom. It’s the only car I can think of that would be that exciting on a track. And a single seater racecar is only good for one person at a time, which defeats the object of this auction.

I’m betting it’ll be something crap, like a Noble.

I have a close relative that works for CiN and she is the one who put the lap onto the auction – aswell as many other items. (Sadly no TG signed stuff!)

I think many people would say the raffle couldve been fixed, and the reason it is auctioned is to try and raise the highest amount they can for CiN. (100% of the money goes to CiN)

Slightly off topic but in the charity vein, remember the old “fastest faith type” races they did? Well how about a “fastest force” race for help the heroes? Pick a random selection of Service Personel, Army, Navy, AirForce and race them round the track! Bet the Army win, dont know how they would make the money but hey Clarkson likes the Forces so why not? TG give me a call!!!!

I agree a raffle would have been better and made same amount of money! Some of us cannot afford thousands of pounds, still give to charity and still would have loved to do a lap with the stig.

So same old story, the richer you are the more things you can do, if your not rich you have to miss out!

    oo-er up to £12,601.00! o.O

May have to dig around my room for things to sell…

    Hmmm…. so far I have:

    > My Haggis
    > The Potato
    > My moonboots
    > PVC cat
    > A 3 foot coffin
    > The jelly bean I found under my bed, (god knows how long that was there for)
    >My autograph book
    >The spider that lives outside my window
    >Valve oil for my Euphonium
    >A Tennis racket with no tennis balls
    >The wee seven dwarf statue’s from snow white
    > and The 6ft Picture I drew of the Stig that’s on my bedroom wall..

That comes to about…. £3.69.. *sighs*

May have to do a little bit more foraging :D

But Stig’s well worth paying that amount of money *nods head*

Thought the CiN thing last night was a bit naff – it wasnt on for long enough!!! And last year the gardening thing was much longer – and funnier! Ricahrd looked very nice though!!! ;) (which answers the question from earlier about teh Top Ground Gear Force thing last year – it wasnt comic relief, it was CiN)
