Down at the telly studio

Posted by The Mole at 3:03 pm on Wednesday November 12, 2008

Telly boys in rehearsalsIt’s filming day for Episode Three in the new series of Top Gear, and the big news is that Mark ‘The Wahlberg’ Wahlberg will be in the house.

Well, we say ‘house’. We mean ‘damp production shed’. But… The Wahlberg! He’s a proper Hollywood star! He’s been in films watched the world over! He’s never advertised Morrisons! And he’s destroying our Reasonably Priced Car! Anyway, The Mole will have more on him later.

Meanwhile, this week’s Big Challenge sees the boys attempting to deliver Mitsubishi Evo-matching performance for a fraction of the price, by simply enhancing and improving an existing car with a series of sensibly applied performance mods. Trouble is, as The Mole may have mentioned, the office sent them arguably the least sporty car ever made.

Sunday also sees the least sporty man ever made (or Captain Slow, as he’s better known) heading off to the Arctic Circle to find out why the Finns (the people from Finland, that is, not the band consisting of the brothers who used to be in Crowded House and Split Enz) are so damn quick. He catches up with some bloke called Mick R Hakkinen. You may have heard of him.

Contrary to the telly listings, it doesn’t look like there’s room for Richard’s Veritas RS3 test this week. Though anything could change by Sunday…

And, in a bit of proper top-secret gossip, The Mole spotted Jeremy indulging in a bit of DIY culinary activity. We’re not sure whether it’ll make it into the show – health and safety aren’t looking too keen…

even though the car they have to modify will probably be a garden shed, I think it should have been an RS Cosworth. That used to be the king in pretty much every kind of performance driving ever, but got usurped by today’s world of evos, imprezas and skylines. Time for a comeback maybe?

Jeremy loose in a kitchen? Health & safety worried? Don’t say he’s making that turkey bazooka again (as made back when he had is own chat show… surely the coolest/funniest pre-Top Gear thing Jeremy’s done on TV that’s nowhere to be found on YouTube).

And it’s easy(ish) to tell what the car their modifying is gonna be (Series12 trailer, blue Renault thing with the big spoiler on the back)… think it’s a Renault Scenic.

I was seriously waiting for SOMEONE to mention this. I can’t believe Jeremy and James haven’t taken the piss out of Hammond (on camera, at least) about it yet.

If Jeremy’s cooking doesn’t make it to TV, please put it online for us! I can’t begin to imagine what a fiasco that will be. Hope the kitchen comes out less on fire than his lorry…

re: Stigsmexicancousin… why? do you not think the ‘Vette and Challenger are good? (I’ll not count the Caddy personally as I think it to be hideously ugly as all Caddys are nowadays. they use the same design philosophy aplied to brick manufacture in most countries).

also… can’t wait for Sunday. Been looking forward to this modifying bit. (one of my fave ever Clarkson DVDs is when he and VBH did up a Rover and a Nova respectively. even though I loathe Novas). and seeing Captain Slow further discredit his nickname should be fun too. no doubt he’ll have some sage vice for this Mick fellow such as “why don’t you just slow down and enjoy the scenery?”

anyways… keep up the amazing work.

by the way, can we expect more hollywoodland people in the lacetti this series now that Mr Ross isn’t about? Though if they still want the long hair and concerning shirts, they could ask that James interview them.

I’m a new Top Gear viewer. Heard the Dickie Betts guitar riff and had to stop and watch. Your film crew does a stellar job. A television show that can set up film quality shots and present a visual feast each outing gets high praise indeed. My studio comment regards the “Hammo” exclusive for the Top Gear Stunt Chalanges. Who was the set dresser for the “slot cars” segment! In the U.S. slot cars are remote control cars run on a track. I love the visual. Could be part of a campaign for new nick name. No More Hamster. I vote we go with compounding his initials RH and turn it to “Rage”. Thanks for the image it did set my mind to wandering.
