Enfield on track

Posted by The Mole at 5:00 pm on Wednesday November 19, 2008

Well, that’s a bit of a change from Mark ‘The Wahlberg’ Wahlberg and his private chopper. Harry Enfield, this week’s Star in a Reasonably Priced Car, has rocked up at the Top Gear studio in… a nice sensible Ford Mondeo.

The Harry and Paul show star has just jumped into the mighty Chevy Lacetti with His Stigness, but not before offering the inscrutable TG timekeeper a fiver to knock a few seconds off his lap time. The inscrutable TG timekeeper declined, of course – maybe Loadsamoney would have helped, Harry?

It’s a bit of a late start for Enfield, in truth: Stig has been out on the track in the Zonda F Roadster this morning, trying to set a lap so quick that – well, so quick that Hammond won’t be able to reach it on the Hot Laps board.

But the Zonda was being a bit temperamental – either that or the Stig hadn’t been fed his normal breakfast of deer carcass and blueberries – so it’s delayed Harry getting out onto the track.

Fear not, though: Stiggy got all that power down on the track in the end, and the lap… well, you’ll have to watch the show on Sunday to find out, but it definitely falls into the Dear-God-That’s-Quick category.

Away from the track, there’s a bit of a last minute treat sitting front-and-centre on the studio floor: Lamborghini’s mental four-door Estoque concept. Yep, that’s the Estoque concept that Lamborghini is actually going to build.

Question is: what do you think the boys will think of it? Is Clarkson going to find the idea of a Lambo saloon as hateful as a Marmite-slathered Toyota Prius? Or do you think Hammond might be keen on a supercar that’ll transport at least a few of his ever-increasing menagerie of pets?

And don’t forget: BBC Two, Sunday, 8pm. Be there. The Mole expects.

No Griggs, I’m sorry. I think they’re great the way they are. Not because of the sturdy and factual info on cars, but because of the digitus impudicus they raise in defiance of this choking day&age (see V8-blender). We shall never surrender! La revoluçion continua!

I thought the whole point of supercars in general, and Lambos in particular, was that they are supposed to be as mad as toast.

The words ‘four-door saloon’ and ‘Lambo’ should spontaneously combust when they’re written next to each other

I agree with Shona, #8 above. A four-door Lambo saloon? That really doesn’t sound right. I suppose, as a mid-life crisis car for the man with multiple children, it might be the only car the (non-petrolhead) wife might not roll her eyes at?

Anyone can make a show reviewing new cars, but it does take something special to make a show as irreverent and as entertaining as Top Gear. Yes, it may be a bit pretentious sometimes, but to me, it adds to the experience and gets makes you have an opinion on what you’re watching, not just feed you facts in a ‘matter of fact’ kinda way.

    Keep it up!!

    Shud b gud.

Griggs, I am one of the 2 or 3 people that watches Dave repeats, and I can tell you they are more entertaining now. Sometimes it gets a bit too much, like Series 10, but this new series is just brilliant.

I reckon JC will complain the Estoque isn’t wild enough. I did at first, but it has such a murderous face, and some great lines, so I think it will age better than the now-rather-tacky Countach and ’90s Diablo.

I have to admit Top Gear is a bit… in-car and out-of-car entertainment. But you don’t hear me complaining! Although some road testing of hot hatches or rep saloons, once in a while, would be nice.

I still find it hard to believe that there are people who, given the choice between watching a series of bizarre and hilarious supercar romps arond the Globe and watching Chris Goffey sagely discussing the practicalities of the glovebox on a Skoda Favorit, would be more interested in travel sweet and spare hanky storage. Top Gear alone justifies my license fee payment, and Dave offers a wonderful and rare second bite of the cherry – I’m probably not alone in happpily watching the same episode twice on consecutive days :)

Not to slate Mr Goffey of course, lovely bloke. Just can’t imagine him jumping a V8 powered skateboard over a pit of rattlesnakes screaming POWERRRRRRR!

Eg when jez was racing bullet train. The whole episode seemed to be acted out really badly

Jez: “oh no i have turned the sat nav off”

Hammond & may : “oh no our train has split in two!!”

I’m really looking forward to the next episode.

The thing is though, this article has not mentioned that the Bugatti Veyron will FINALLY be driven by the Stig.

So, what does everyone think? Will the Veyron produce a mind-blowing lap and cement its place at the top? Or will its power-to-weight ratio let it down? (The Veyron has less power per ton than the Koenigsegg CCX, and half the power per ton than that Caparo T1, which did a lap in 1:10.)

I saw the Lambo myself in the flesh and have to say . . . well im undecided, it looks fantasic but it looks too angular like it was made using too many complicated Reventon bits stuck to a saloon. You just find it hard to “accept” it as a Lambo.

Like they say in French “les gouts et les couleurs ne se discutent pas” (you can’t discuss colour and taste)… So whether you prefer the old shows or the new, it’s a matter of personal opinion.

Same thing with the Estoque. I love the concept and how it looks, pure Lamborghini madness. So even if Clarkson or the boys don’t like it, I couldn’t care less. The way they express their dislike is always entertaining though.
By the way, remember the Lamborghini Espada?

Fifth Gear, interesting but ever so slightly dull. Top Gear, much better and still the best prog on the telly but not as good as previous series (series 3 through 7, magic TV). Seems to me they’re all working too hard elsewhere these days and don’t have the energy to put into it. Still, can’t blame em, gotta get the money while you can…..Looking forward to Sunday, but not sure Harry will be funny. He was the first ever guest and he wasn’t massively amusing, just ok (watched it a few weeks ago after downloading it). Still it it was the first episode ever, give him the benefit of the doubt for now and hope he proves me wrong.
