Not what you expected?

Posted by The Mole at 9:10 pm on Sunday November 23, 2008

There were a lot of surprises on today’s show, not least of which was James May doing a power test in a Zonda. It was a beautiful thing – and didn’t the car sound awesome? – with James doing a properly good job of testing it out, in his stripey jumper…

Then the boys did an actual economy race. An economy race on Top Gear, who’d have thought? But it was a proper Top Gear race, and The Mole especially liked Stig’s naughty lever pulling at the end. He is a one.

But probably the biggest surprise was that the Bugatti Veyron, after literally years of us waiting for it, wasn’t the quickest car ever aroud the test track. As James said, maybe it is just too heavy.

Anyway, what did you think?

    So who pranged the Veyron??

I saw there was a dent along the underside of the offside of the car, was the Stig at fault??

I can’t believe that the Zonda is faster than the Bugatti, and that the Bugatti wasn’t at the top!!
    I was speechless!

Harry Enfield was great on the track! The whole ‘Clarkson Island’ spoof is absolutely hilarious, if you haven’t seen it, look on youtube because it is brilliant

Evil Stig, switchin on the lights, great episode!! Can’t wait till next week

2 years of waiting… I’m honestly not surprised.

I’m an avid Veyron fan, but making the nation and indeed the world wait for 2 years made me iffy about the Veyron coming top and indeed Volkswagon’s confidence in the car itself.

To be honest i had doubts that the Veyron would top the Gumpert but not by THAT margin. But I’m wondering: How fast would the Porsche GT9 9ff & the Koenigsegg CCX-R EDITION would do be cause the old CCX the stig crashed was STILL faster than the veyron by 0.6 of a second and with another 200bhp, I have high hopes for it and the Porsche. Anyone Else agree?

It was never going to be fastest. If they made a stripped out, track/road legal version, it would be a 1.15 probably.

Can you test the convertible on with the umbrella roof??

It wasn’t that shocking. The Bugatti EB 16.4 weighs 1.9 tonnes on it’s own, with no one in it. Thats 522 bhp per tonne, hardly the highest power to weight ratio. The F Roadster’s ptw is 528. Only slightly more, but its 1230kg to the Bugs 1880kg really made a difference in the corners.

That economy race was better than initially it sounded, that Jag is magic!! That engine in the new XF would’ve probably taken him back to Swizerland.

Shame May lost in the Legacy. I like that car. Mind you, I also like the Jag, so I’m not disappointed.

    But Stig’s a cheeky bugger isn’t he?!

Definitely the weight. Thought the Zonda had it to be honest.

As for the economy test, it was fantastic but why didn’t they all take the Audi Jezza used to get to Edinburgh. I’d always take something that was proven to work.

Oh and slightly off-topic, the Stig is one of the best inventions in TV. You can have anyone under the helmet and, because he’s such an enigma, him doing average things is hilarious.

Poor Clarkson, he must be livid that his “POOOOWWWWEEEERRRRRR!” mindset has been proven to be codswhallop. For all its power and its technical ability, the Veyron is not the fastest around the track. It just proves its now about how much power you have, but how you can utilise it. I agree wtih James, the car is far to heavy for the track. With the quick direction changes the mass of the car is just to great for the suspension to cope with.

James’ “POWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER” test, wow *is speachless*. He really is full of surprises (I was really looking forward to that segment). I loved the drag race as part of it too. Please let the Captain do more power tests. And please let him do a Stig intro as well (he looked like he really wanted to do his first ever Stig intro). What’s with the mick take from Jeremy about James spinning off? How many times has Jeremy spun off in his power tests? I agree with James’ quip about his hair getting in the way of his eyes. I have the exact same problem sometimes, which isn’t very helpful to me when I’m about to walk into the road to cross it or when I’m trying to eat something and it gets in what I’m eating.

Stig in Blackpool cracked me up. He’s another one full of surprises.

Ian, It’s Koenigsegg (I believe, or could be wrong) or rather Koenigseggeggeggegg.

Zonda F Roadster vs. Bugatti Veyron? One epic race. I can’t believe the Veyron wasn’t faster round the track though – all those years of waiting, just to be disappointed.

Loved James’ power test and his impression of Jeremy (“POWEEEEEEER!”). I can’t believe the Jag made it all the way to Blackpool and could still have gone further (especially with the non-economic driving).

Very glad to finally see some ribbing re: Hammond’s supermarket ad. Was waiting for that and couldn’t believe it hadn’t come sooner. The Clarkson Island thing was hilarious and it’s great to see Jeremy making fun of someone making fun of him.

Another excellent episode, looking forward to next week!

When you make a car that is capable of running to 253 mph in what can only be described as a reasonably luxurious manner, it’s probably a bit unreasonable to expect it to be as nimble around a racing track as cars which are slightly more purpose built for the job? The Veyron GT edition might just push it over the last little bit of the gap with its extra 250 bhp though….

I thought last week’s episode was an affront to intelligent television whereas this week’s was brilliant (something your fantastic guest talked about- making the show they wanted, not what would appeal the lowest common denominator).

This is how TopGear should be! Please remember where you came from… this was spot on. I expect some of your ‘fans’ would have found episode 4 boring due to distinct lack of stupidity (not comedy- stupidity; very different things) but pleeeeease keep doing an Enfield, and make the show you want to, with cars in it at everything!

I echo the words of everyone’s disappointment a regards the Veyron, just shows how much of a great test that track is. I was however disappointed with the news. When they mentioned the bit about “theres no need to have a peugeot” it was exactly same story that they didnt include two weeks before. Is there not much news in the world of motoring? Briliant show tonight, one of the best, it seemed so strange watching Captain Slow zooming round the track for a change, but great to see – I hope James gets to do more power tests, I thought it was good the way he learned the track by going round in his Panda first. Good work Captain, but one piece of advice – if you’re gonna do regular power tests, perhaps it might be a good idea to keep your hair short!!!

Great race tonight too, thoroughly enjoyed it, while I wasn’t as gullable as a lot of viewers, I knew the Veyron wouldn’t be the fastest on the track, it’s got brilliant speed – in a straight line, but too much power for going round a track, also it’s too heavy, and unable to put all its power down, it’s not surprising it came 4th, til the Zonda F went round, that made the Veyron 5th fastest. Disappointed? Not really, the Veyron’s a fantastic car, but even that can’t be brilliant at everything.

I believe the Bugatti was not the fastest because it was filled with all sorts of things you would find in an ordinary car, as pointed out by Richard one time. Radio, airbags(?) etc… Whereas the Gumpert probably does not have these things, meaning it is lighter and will of course, be faster

Wow – the road-going luxury rocketship Veyron wasn’t as fast as the stripped out racecar Gumpert on a track – who would have thunk it…?

    /sarcasm off

Loved the Jag diesel, but unfortunately only the american episode (which was one of the best ever) has rated above average for me so far this season.

Just before this episode tonight was the original USA trip on DAVE – I’m sorry but tonights didn’t even come close.

The editing is getting sloppier as well – you used to hardly be able to tell where the cuts were – now they stick out so badly you may as well put a clapper board out.

I don’t get how anyone could ever think of a Veyron beeing fast around a racing track. Just because it can go 407 km/h doesn’t mean it is a racing car like the Gumpert.

I can’t believe the Veyron! I sat there, with my fingers crossed praying it would knock the Gumbert off the top and it didn’t even come in the top three!!! Gutted….

James’s PPPPOOOOWWWWEERRRRR test.. all I can say is FINALLY we have had a chance to see what he can really do if he puts his mind to it. Hopefully this is the first of many. Not too sure about the car though.

Thank you for showing the Blackpool race. Me and my mum were in the crowd that day and it brought back some wonderful memories of a fab mother and daughter weekend.

Top Gear thank you once again for being the highlight of my weekend.

    Long may you reign!!

great episode, didn’t fancy last weeks much , but now it was so much better.

I loved james’ head moving when he accelerated in the zonda…. haha LOL.

about the zonda, wooow, what a machine and that sound…

Liked the race also, but if james didn’t drove all the way around leeds, he would have won.

As an regular watcher of Top Gear, I could not help but feel disappointed by this weeks show and felt it lacked something. The people on this messaging board who had criticized last weeks show would have been sorely disappointed with this one. Normally I would defend the show but not this time I’m afraid. The race you did from Switzerland to Blackpool was completely mind numbingly boring and dull, as was most of the content of the show the only bit I did like however, was when you did the power test of both the Veyron and the Zonda and I was sorely disappointed that neither of those cars was able to knock the Gumpert (a frankly ugly car) off the top spot as the fastest car.

So, in all honesty I really think that unless new ideas are made for the show I can’t see it surviving another season although I really would like for you to prove me wrong as I enjoy the show most of the time and would like for it to continue but not if you’re going to be producing such rubbish as this.

    SORT IT OUT PLEASE LADS!!!!!!!!

Well well well, it was a whole lot, well I mean two REALLY, of returning to firsts. Obviously, Mr. Enfield returning to the track, but also and James himself mentioned it.. The Zonda was tested on the ‘come back’ Top Gear in 2002.

James May’s test of the Zonda. Well, that was most entertaining. I hope he does some more. I got worried when i saw the Panda i admit, but I had hope and it paid off, everyone knows that James is secretly the Stig, after all, who forgets his performance in the battle vs. the Germans.

The Economy race. It was a bit repetitive of Jeremy’s test in the Audi from a few years ago. But in triplicate. A Jag diesel, a Subaru and a Polo.

And with that.. my comment has ended.

very predictable that veyron wasnt at top. that car is only ment for straight line speed. through the corners you could see it was struggling. as james may said, its too heavy, it may be a supercar but its set up as a GT car, a automatic transmission (although DSG) and full of expensive/exotic materials that wasnt put in for weight saving reasons. its a luxury car.
    extremly amazed by JCs jaguar.

May done well in the Zonda. Good on you mate.

The news section of the peugeot bipper or whatever it was, I saw that before. The exact same segment, about two weeks ago on the outtakes I think??? Did they just rehash the entire scripted segment? Very peculiar.

The challenge was interesting enough. They are all so competitive and so cruel to one another. Very funny tv.

To those of you who say Clarkson drove an A8 the to John O’Groats, I disagree, unless he done it a second time. I’m convinced he chose this XJ as he recalled how it just kept going even when it was telling him the tank was empty on that drive. I also recall how he talked about the game he played with the gauge, hoping it would get him home, getting there and then leaving it for his wife to fill it up again. He drove a, then brand new, Jaguar XJ the length of the UK in that show from a year or two back. You might recall Jeremy eating various chocolate bars for each meal, & discussing the comfort of the car. I also recall how he said it was a magnificent motorway muncher and that, yet, on the Scottish highland B-roads, the car seemed to ’shrink’ around him and felt nimble, agile and almost BMW 3 Series sized.

I’m glad the fat faced Veyron wasn’t fastest. It’ll give VW something to think about.

Enfield made a decent crack at the lap… good on him.

The Stig really made me laugh when he hit the lights. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed the show this week. Great work.

Very nice show this one! I was laughing as tickled. Thank you for that!

There was only one thing that kept my mind busy – and it was mpg race.

My ‘95 Audi 80 Avant 1,9 TDi goes 1200 km (~745 miles) with one tank (64 litres = ~14 Gallons) loaded with 4 people and stuff in the booth. My last big route went from Riga (Latvia) to Krakow (Poland), witch means driving mostly through “fantastic” polish roads packed with small villages, constant road repairs and Warsaw’s traffic. And it took me around 16 hours to make it. Strangely I was not dead after the trip, because the car is still comfy.

So the question is – what is the progress in car industry in these 13 years if we can get the same results in cars that are in different tales (in terms of age).

Well , regarding the veyron – it is all down to the track , if was a bigger proper track like silverstone it would have possibly smashed the pagani and it looked like the stig didnt really push it that hard and the traction was obviously ON..
Secondly its the first time i got the idea that clarkson seems to be preparing his retirment in a way..dont ask how i got down to this but i do get the feeling on that..i hope i am wrong

Is it just me that thinks the Veyron Stig lap might have been done with the TC still on, it looked a bit like it off the line and then the jumpy tyre squeal and unnatural lack of oversteer. Also, the Veyron seemed to have excessive understeer throughout the lap which could be caused by TC?

  86. untouchable_abz said...

People who were dissapointed by the Veyron laptime, should have expected as much. All the cars above it on the board are lightweight and track/race oriented. The Veyron has the best straight line acceleration/speed as demonstrated by the drag race they had.

The fact that VW never allowed Veyron to do a power lap, always put a doubt in my mind, Im just surprised that it managed composed lap on the track…

Or did it? The dent on the right side skirt suggests to me that it is quite a handful with the TC off. Perhaps the laptime is what it is because it was done with the TC on.

Get rid of the rubbish guest or get better ones in please.

I would have hoped that topgear is of a certain quality that it need not compile an entire news segment on a previous outtake.

Regarding the Jag XJ and the Audi A8 confusion: Jeremy drove the A8 from london to edinburgh and back on a single tank a total of 800 miles. Whereas I recall Jeremy drove the Jag to see if how long it would take him to get bored. While driving he came up with a game where the fuel light came on and he drove past a fuel station to see if he could make it to the next station for fun. Then when he got to the next station and drove past that too, and so on and so on.

Not a bad episode, shame about the news segment.

Cant say I’m shocked at all with the Veyrons time. In fact in a text exchange before the lap, I predicted the Veyron would hit about a 1:18, and was bang on. The Gumpert and the Ascari and just about all the other cars heading the powerboard are all hardcore road rockets, something the Veyron doesnt try to be. Instead it is a civilised, comfortable easy car to drive (or rather thats the opinion of just about any lucky git to drive one) which also happens to have 1000bhp and a top speed of over 250. Cant find the lap times on this new site, but off the top of my head the next comfortable civilised easy driving car down is the SLR at 1:20 something, so the Veyrons time was still unbelievable. Great show tonight, love seeing Stig out and about, James did well with the Zonda too, POOOOOOWEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I think it was ESP that held the Bugatti Veyron back especially the fact that the ESP button on the Bugatti Veyron is hidden under the steering column. If it was massive weight, how come it didn’t understeer on the hammerhead corner?

Not surprised in the slightest that the Veyron wasn’t top. It’s got too much weight to corner quickly and over such a small track never was going to have the room to claw the corner deficits back in the straights. Still, I just love how effectively it decelerated and how composed it looked. It didn’t look blisteringly fast like the DBR9, the T1 or the Zonda, but it’s a different beast. In terms of power it still destroyed the Zonda and given the weight of the thing, that’s amazing.

I’m still a fan and I’m not even gutted. Love the car. It’s got total comfort in it’s awesomeness without having to win everything.

    Great show guys!

Christ! Cars! Actual cars on TOP GEAR! Beautiful, beautiful cars! Oh how I’ve missed you. Who knew that a VW Polo TDI and a Subaru Legacy Estate with a diesel could look so damned lovely? Don’t listen to the hoodies and the girlies who don’t give a damn about cars, lads: this week’s episode was properly brilliant, because it felt like TG used to feel like. We have cars, beautifully photographed (without the painfully idiotic post-production dicking about and colour de-saturating you’ve seemingly fallen in love with since series 8…), doing their thing, with our three intrepid heroes providing the colour commentary. This one is going on the (very) short list of post-series-7 episodes that I regularly replay.

The thing is, Clarkson, Hammond and May are all genuinely funny blokes left to their own devices; they don’t need to turn TG into f*&!ing “Benny Hill” to prove it. I think what distinguishes the best TG episodes from the lamest ones is that difference in intent. It always seemed like they were more interested in inspiring awe than inspiring giggles—the giggles got thrown in free of charge as an extra, thanks to the personalities of the three presenters. But recent series have been more about strained comedy bits than about being truly, gobsmackingly awe-inspiring. But this ep. and ep. 2 are each proof that when they get down to it and stop pissing about, nobody does it better. Great job, lads.

Oh, and for the love of God…STOP APOLOGISING FOR BEING A CAR SHOW. The only people bored during the Blackpool economy run film are the very people you *should* be trying to alienate. They turned over? Good! F*$& ‘em! I’m sure somewhere else on the dial there is some show or another where people are breaking things and lighting flatulence. Let them watch that. Give us our cars back, you hoodie halfwits.

It looks like reports of the death of good, proper TG were greatly exaggerated. Keep it up, chaps. Can’t wait until next week…

Yes it was good not to see all the forced ‘cocking about’! The roller coaster of emotions from the Guys on the economy run was entertainment enough, they have real personalities; Hammond’s face when he overtook Jezza on the M6! May’s fingers on the gear stick ‘calm down’, and Clarkson’s refusal to take it seriously.
That ecenomy run also worked as a good showcase for the cars BUT what did it actually COST to brim those tanks???
We all really knew the Veryon wasn’t a stripped out track car, so 1.18 was really good for it’s weight with the T/C on.
May’s reactons while driving of the Zonda, actually gave you an idea of just how fast it went, and I finally got to see how the brakes are so good they ‘pull your face off’!
Well done guys, great car programme…

Shame Richard didn’t try it though, he loves zondas. On the other hand, he would have just giggled the whole time!:P
But again, loved this episode. Keep it up!

I don’t know if this has been clarified further up but Clarkson drove an Audi A8 from London to Edinburgh and back to London on a tank, not to John ‘O’ Groats.

Also I am not atall surprised on the outcome of the Veyrons attempt, it’s a GT car….Grand Tourer! a big comfortable cruiser that will mould your face if you peg it in a straight line, all the cars at the top are of the ower board are so much more focused with there crazy amounts of downforce (Gumpert upside down in a tunnel?) and rear diffusers etc.

James was class as usual. You Too Stig!.

no surprise on the veyron for my part. it is a showcase. you can make a car that handles a 1000 BHP. its comfy and usable. it could never compete with the gumpbert or det A10, witch is hopeless, but corners fast. We saw what it could do in the dragrace with the zonda… I still love the Veyron. And i think it look good in white!:D

actually its a pleasant surprise that the veyron isn’t top of the board… even though the top gear track is a power circuit… it just goes to show that lightness and handling is everything… the veyron just wasn’t built to be a track car..
but kudos to james on the zonda test.. it was really funny to see him keep running over the salient features of a track test :P

As a Peugeot employee I was a little disappointed by Jeremy’s remarks regarding the company’s products on last night show. After hearing Jeremy slating Peugeots products, you can imagine my surprise when minutes later he is raving about the performance and frugality of the Jaguar saloon, Just for the record Jeremy this car was running an engine designed and developed by Peugeot , It might have been appropriate to point that out .

    Hi,
I’m from Sri Lanka and watch TG on you tube as it’s not broadcasted on BBC world. I watch it as soon as the episode is available on you tube.
Any way I also think the Veyron must have another run probably with the traction control off. But I m not sure whether it can put that enomorous power down without TC. And may be Stig can push it a little bit harder as the lap was kinda like boring n slow.
Anyway wot do u guys think ?

It is 5 years hence and PC’s can emulate human intelligence. Sarah Palin is in charge at the White House and is polishing her ICBM’s. (Obama left after a misdemeanour with Clinton).
Britain has run out of money and can’t afford oil anymore. The Army is now carbon neutral and has gone back to donkey power. Guns have been banned under Health and Safety rules. The Navy’s last ship has been impounded by the French for unpaid harbour dues.
The Airforce practises on bicycles as in 1940. Boris Johnson is our new leader and also has bitparts on Drury Lane. ‘Teflon’ Tony is the new Don at EEC Mafia HQ. Iraq has changed the letter ‘q’ to ‘n’ in the national alphabet. The Taliban has won the Wall’s Icecream contract in Kabul, there were no competing bids. The NHS is only for the poor or dying.
Mugabe is President for life of Africa.
The common cold has mutated with AID’s after an accident at Porton Down. America has released the new ‘Kill for Freedom’ army robot.
Alien UFO’s have landed in Birmingham warning that humans might be superceded by a self regenerating species of killer robots of their own design, and they don’t think it would be a very good idea as they spread to other planets throughout the galaxy and generally rush around shouting ‘terminate the inferior carbon life forms!’. MI5 and MI6 were disbanded after Government secrecy laws were deemed to be unconstitutional. Science has proven that a generally malevolent lifeforce was involved at the start of creation. His friends call him Lucifer.

The challenge for the boys is to setup a new covert operation called MI7.
Their mission, should they accept it, is to rescue civilisation in this part of the galaxy.
    They have 3 options.
They can capture a UFO, somehow.
They can try to find the ‘Hall of Records’ concealed under the Sphinx by the Atlanteans 15,000 years ago, before their midAtlantic homeland exploded. They will need to avoid the nonliving living Tomb Guards left in place. Ref Cayce.
They can design their own UFO using an old Harrier with a new ellipsoid body. Lasers would be handy with a small nuclear generator. Remote Viewing would locate their target(s), and they could work out the details of multidimensional time travel from Superstring theory in their spare time. They could not use Cambridge University as they haven’t worked it out yet.

As usual they would have up to £1000 to spend and 3 days to complete the task.

Ahhhhhh! That’s Top Gear as we know – Welcome Back !!!!

Yes, the Formula was there, everythink was alright :

    Start:
    1)car re-view and comparison,
    2)good news = desia san…. ha ha
ha.., 3)part 1 of road trip,

4)Star in a reasonably priced car
    5) Part 2 of road Trip
    6) Test-Track

    –>End of Bombshell<–

    -DONE!

And actually this week, Harry Enfield in the r.priced car, it was interesting to watch him improving by 12 seconds very good.

But really tha star on this ep, is May-Zonda-Veyron.

Not exactly world-war 1 VS World War 2 , with sparks and machine guns flying; but still -
    The Bugatti VS Zonda =

POWER of POWER VS Power to Wheight ratio + corner cutting capability

    And in a way it was forseable for for the Veyron to under-perform on a track with tight corners; and the Zonda to perform so well on the track;

    cause, Veyron is like american cars, fast on the straight, weak in corners;
Zonda is more like European cars, fast on the straight fast at the corners the power needed applied,
but with the eye on the power to weight ratio plus eye on turning-circle and suspension.

Result = Veyron leafs you for dead on the straight, but looks like an old man dancing carefully to not to brake his back, that’s the veyron at corners.

So the real king of cars, is the car that is able to combine speed of light and corner cutting house fly capability.

That’s the king, the veyron hasn’t got that blance right.

Back to T-Gear, the road trip wasn’t boring, it just wasn’t tire squeeling speed feeling corner blasting trip; but this trip wasn’t boring, since it was a very interesting challenge,

    between, size of fuel tank,
    mpg
    and the cars capability to
    live on after the liquid
    fuel has been sucked dry

So it WAS nail biting and intelligently interesting.

It hasn’t always to be; ,
    Power – Corner – & Looks

    Super! ;)

I thought the Veyron was gunna be 5th. Its just not designed as a full on trackcar like the Gumpert is. It would be a tough decision over which to take though…Pagani or Bugaati.Well i don’t like the sound of the Veyron.it just seems too muted. Whereas the zonda sounds lovel and just looks soooo much nicer but after the engine blew up then it sorta put me off.

Fair play to whoever let you use their dented veyron though

Having saw the show last night i have to say that i think it was a fix. Look how slow he set off, look how slow he was going around the corners, look how eirly he was braking for the corners. I think it had the tracktion control on. If you couldn’t find the button then its down under the steering wheel. When i saw the Stig take it round the track it looked rubbish, when i saw it on Fifth Gear thought it looked alive. Whats wrong with stig, he got a cold.

I think that the Veyron did not break as fast as the Zonda that is why it failed. Too much power on the straight meant too much breaking in the corners. Even so, I would go for the Buggati.

    Great show chaps, as always.

p.s. You know what will be fun to see. If May, Clarkson and Hammond make a virtual race of the GT5.

Also I never though the Veyron would be faster then the Ascari or Gumpery etc, it has a curb weight over 2000 KGs! With that much weight it will never be a track record setter, on the ‘ring its time is only 7min 40 secs, a non V-spec GTR on stock tyres can do a 7:29 !!

I think another thing to take into cosideration is that the Topgear Track does appear to be a very tight course with only one area for a car to apen the taps. A car as heavy as the Veyron coupled with the fact it can’t use its power were the reasons for that result.

For the Veyron to get top, they need to make a new version of it, which dumps all of the internal conforts. There must be quite an extra weight with all of it. Make a Superlegerra version and it might get top.

P.S I also thought it was abit hypocrytic of Jezza to diss Peugeot so much and proclaim how good the Jag was, when it’s 2.7 diesel was mostly developed by Peugeout itself. And I know how much they all love the iconic 205 GTI which they seemed to have forgotton about.

The Zonda F roadster is more powerful and weights the same as the normal Zonda F. It also has a very rigid chassis like James mentioned. So I wasn’t surprised to see it being faster than the conventional Zonda F and the Veyron.
And as the Topgear circuit is a power circuit, straight line speed doesn’t matter in there, its more about how fast the car can cut through the corners, hence cars like Nissan GTR, Aerial Atom, Lotus Exige make it to the top.

The Veyron is too big, its heavy and its ridiculously fast in a straight line which was proved by the drag race. But around the track its slowed down by its weight. I was expecting to see the Veyron slower than the other supoercars as it is slow around tracks. Its a GT car. Its not that fast around the Nurburgring either. Its more for driving really fast on the autobahn in luxury!

Though one thing I don’t get is how did Jezza make it to blackpool in that Jag?!

Monday November 24, 2008 at 12:18 pm Link to comment Report comment

the only reason the veyron was that slow was not because of its weight but mainly it was to do with the fact that it has 4 turbo’s and stig did the lap in auto mode. turbo’s all have lag no matter how good it is and auto ‘boxes take longer to put the power down especially if it weighs so much. even with the cars weight if it had superchargers, no lag wot so ever, and a manual ‘box it would be top. the zonda was a manual and it looked much faster on the follow through because the stig could put what power he wanted at precisely the time he wanted..the advantage of manual.
another thing the veyron was never build to excel on the track, buggati never made the top speed of it official, they never got the guniness book of recorde people or anything, the only acolade they got at the time was the most powerful road car in the world, thats it.

Much better show gentlemen, no half arsed forced cocking about this week. Amazing how much funnier they are when they are just being themselves. All the segments were good this time around. Best episode of the series so far? Possibly, that or the US trip, not made up my mind yet.

Just 2 minor quibbles, was the news really a bit of a rehash of an outtake posted on the website a few weeks ago? I haven’t checked but watching the bit about the Peugeot did seem very familiar. If it was, that’d be very disappointing, it’s not as if there isn’t car news around (just have a look at this website).

Last one, the eco race. Good all round film but is it me, or do they not tell us anything about the cars they’re driving in these things anymore? It used to be that they justified their own choices, telling us why it was the right choice with amusing information and tidbits about ride, comfort, quality etc…whilst riping the p*** out of the other 2s choices. Perhaps they still do and the producers cut that out or maybe they don’t have to anymore. Shame, ‘cos they are all funny when they do it (go back and watch Jeremy talking about the DB9 in the race to Monte Carlo, or when the 3 of them in went to Scotland with a TT, a Brera and an RX8, or in Iceland when Hammond and Clarkson spent all the time bickering about the 350Z and TT, all very funny). In this one we got a tiny bit about them all at the start and that was about it. They could pass it off as a second road test of 3 cars at once, keep everyone happy!

Other than that though, quite satisfied this week, keep this up lads and all will soon be forgiven.

Have just watched the news uncut video for episode 2 of this series on this very same site. also i hope bugatti do a stripped out version of the veyron cause all that weight made it too slow through the corners compared to the gumpert, koenigsegg, ascari and zonda even if it is much faster in a straight line. to all of you wondering whether the traction control was turned off remember that the veyron is 4 wheel drive, or maybe is it that bugatti told them not to turn it off. don’t no what qaid is on about because the veyron has a paddle shift gearbox.

    Great episode!

The Stig asleep on the rollercoaster cracked me up and I’ll admit to being a bit upset at the Veyron’s lap-time, even though weight-wise it couldn’t have gone any other way.

Everybody upthread saying that this episode was boring or that recent episodes have been shameless ratings grabs needs to seriously chill out. The nice thing about Top Gear getting so popular is that it’s turning loads of people who wouldn’t normally have been interested into petrolheads. To do that you need both old-school type episodes like this one and sillier stuff like the V8 blender challenge too. For what it’s worth, I reckon this season’s got the mix just right.

Also, I’m loving the running gag about wearing daft things “for a bet”.

(I’ve actually got a £20 bet on with my flatmate that one of them will end up wearing high heels before the end of the season.

Any chance of this happening? It really would be “for a bet”, MINE!)

    to the car details,

I thing in the Top-Gear history, when they were doing challenges or road trips, they often only gave the relevant information according the task they are about to take on.

And so on this challenge they only gave out the information that was important to the challenge they were about to take.
And that was , the size of the fuel 1)tank, 2)mpg and updated info of how much fuel they have as they were driving on.

    For proper car detail, we got tha re-views;
that’s way i earlier said that i wouldn’t mind if the guys were to test more than 2 cars and take 5 mins longer describing them.

gromcom …. ive just had a quick look back the buggati lap and i realise the stig was using the flappy paddle but that hardly makes a difference because it is still too heavy. the reason flappy paddle works in an f1 car and not in a normal car is because it is so light. but im definately right about the turbos..think back to when jeremy was testing that evo. he put it against a fiat stilo and it showed the lag in a turbo charger..the veyron has 4 huge ones – which is worse..

It seemed that the Veyron also had the traction control on. Tiff Needell demonstrated that the car cannot go sideways with it on, the power is completely cut. Thing is, if that car went to the top, there is nothing that could of beaten it anyway. I think the stig went far too slow around the hammerhead and final corner. I think the car can go quicker.

The Veyron was a strange one, I think that most expected it to obliterate all, but it is a heavy car! But the Stig really give it the welly? But at the end of the day i’d still have one over the Zonda! The noise it makes is awesome!

    ANOTHER THING TOP GEAR!!!

You always leave a gap on the lap board for where your going to place the time. At the start of the show was a big gap under the CCX where OOOOOOOBVIOUSLY the Veyron was going to be. So it kinda spoilt the suprise. Same with the guests when Jay Kay went top etc, there was a gap so Jeremy could just splat the time on the board.

On the topic of the Bugatti’s lap time, reasons for it and possible retest…

The Bugatti would not make it around the track without the downforce generated by the rear spoiler. Remember what used to happen to Audi TT’s if they took a corner at high speed when they didn’t have spoilers? They spun, irretrievably. The Bugatti would quite likely do the same, just at a higher speed and with worse consequences. I for one wouldn’t like to be the person making the call to Bugatti to explain to them that, “What happened was, a giant Albatross just came out of nowhere…” Although we weren’t shown the spin or whatever it was that happened, its possible that it is where the dent came from. Stig usually does without the Traction Control, but it was obviously switched on from the way the car handled… and oddly, Clarkson never mentioned the status of the Traction Control in the voice over as he normally would.

With or without traction control the Veyron was always highly unlikely to match the very top performers on the Power Lap board. Clearly from the footage Stig was not trashing this machine around the track without any electronic nanny as he normally does. It was all just a little bit too safe looking… dull even. The traction control must have been on. But if it was it is because it needed to be on. The Veyron is simply too heavy. 4 wheel drive and a 16 cylinder engine??? Even without the bodywork it would be heavy.

The Veyron only set the time it did because it has phenomenonally massive grunt to make good on the straights. But in the twisty bits physics take over and no amount of BHP can overcome that fact. The Veyron was built to be the worlds fastest production car (i.e.: with the highest top speed). But it was only built to do that in a straight line.

I don’t much care for the Veyron, even if I appreciate its somewhat exotic (outlandish)looks, materials and impressive engineering. It doesnt really even make the right noise to impress me. The start was one of the dullest I’ve ever seen on a power lap. There was no drama. It moved off the line with absolutely no drama or excitement whatsoever. It was the ultimate anticlimax to the 2 year wait. The Veyron sounds good in its own right, it rumbles and whoooshes like some kind of crazed locomotive. But the Zonda wails and screams.

I prefer the drama and excitement of cars from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Ascari, Koeniggsegg, Zonda indeed even the hideous Gumpert Apollo, with that high pitched spine tingling noise. Its a far more suitable sound for a supercar and even if the car was a fraction of the cost, it would be more satisfying if it sounded that way too.

Sorry to say it VW, but the Veyron leaves me cold…

…and it looks like a vertically challenged van with gland issues.

Was a good show this week – whilst I am surprised the Zonda was faster round the track than the Veyron (esp the Roadster version), the Stig did seem to be driving a little more reservedly in the Bug, never really seeming to push it very hard.

You know what, maybe the Veyrons heavyness could be a very good use when taking tha spoiler down, since the Veyron is so heavy, and it’s design gives the car balance. it would stay on its 4 wheels until it goes into the corners with too speed , and the G-Force suddenly will be strongest at the side of the car facing into the direction to where it slided, and the car will lift and once it gets a specific angle …..it will kip and roll.

i reckon when bringing the spoiler down, the Veyrons wheight and power will keep it at it’s 4 wheels.

The braking does not belong to the most important elements of making a car go faster around the test track, as last weeks ep, showed; when the three spent 3000 pounds for the brakes of that massive family glass car; they thought, it would be a positive, helping the stig brake earlier, so that he could blast through the corners quicker; BUT that wasn’t the case, instead the car was 2 seconds slowerrrr with the better Brakes!!!

Check the video from ep 3 if you need prove when the 3 where trying to improve that massive glass family car.

And so with the spoiler down, it would be insane in the straights, and slide carefully in the corners, then a gear lower for quick acceleration and off!

Using Jeremys style of driving, when he drives on the ”Autobahn” , he once said he never brakes, instead he carefully removes his foot from the speed pedal to slow down in time and accelerates when tha road is clear.

I reckon doing all that, will do the trick!

i’m not surprised about the veyron..i’m not a lover of it, but i love the engineering boffin-ness they put into it. i think it was becasue it built up so much speed on the straights, stigmeister had to brake so hard for the corners undoing all the work. just a theory, and May’s idea was right aswell

I correctly predicted that the Veyron wouldn’t top the list. Having the highest top speed doesn’t mean it’ll be faster than everything at everything. It’s only faster than everything else when driving in a straight line. Throw it round a few corners and it becomes sluggish (it looked pretty sluggish going round the track anywho). Besides, it seemed too obvious a choice for topping the board for it to actually manage it.

And I don’t like the look of that Zonda. It’s a bit big for my liking, =S

Still, love everything else about it, =D

I don’t think that the Veyrons performance was that surprising, as James said its just too heavy, all the other cars at the top are lightened but the Veyron weighs over 2 tons, it’ll just have lost too much time at hammerhead and the last 2 corners.

well… slightly dissapointed, but not – if i’m honest – surprised by the Veyron’s track performance. As said eleventy billion and twelvty times already, it’s just too heavy… now if someone were inclined to strip one out, it’d probably be a good 300 or more kg lighter, after-all, it does have a lot of luxury.

still made that Zonda F look slow in a drag-race though. always stupefies me when i see the Veyron doing that – it’s party piece. Saw a clip of it doing the same to a McMerc from around 100mph.

also, well done James on a power test. shouted POWEEER at the right point and everything.

Though i’m currently reading that the Veyron Gt wont have 1200 or 1250bhp after-all. it’ll have 1350bhp!!! oh… and a piffling top speed of… wait for it… 264mph. Bugatti are insane! I love them.

    In the world.

i read so stupid things in this post…. first of all… veyron has 1001hp and 860bhp moron… it is a totally different think…. hp weight ratio it is the only thing that matters… not only hp… thats why morons the ariel atom is so high on the list with only 300hp (i think)… stop asking for a lightweight veyron… it is not gonna happen because the target market of it, is different… it is a grand tourer, a distance eater… not a track car like apollo.. apollo has 590hp per tone!!! bugatti is only 18 km/h faster than the mclaren f1, and mclaren has only 627hp!!! i bet that it will be faster than veyron in the track!!! also i dont thing if anyone who wrote on this blog, if he had paid 1.2 million pounds, would allow top gear to deactivate the traction control… dont be moron it is a 1001hp beast given to an unknown person…. they placed the botton there for a reason… to be more difficult to deactivate it… and believe they know where the tc butoon is!!! i dont think that stig would be able to go faster on the track with the tc off!!! probably at the end the stig would be out of the track with a totaled veyron… and finally the moron who wrote about the gear changes and the turbo lag… it is a dsg which is dead fast and you are living in 2008 not 80’s turbo lag it wasnt the problem… it is all about physics…

I was surprised the Veyron wasn’t top but I think James is right, it’s too big and heavy to be fast enough on a track.

Loved that Jeremy’s Jag took him all the way to Blackpool instead of his house and seeing the Stig having a go on the Blackpool attractions was very funny, I hope he had fun!

    Guvna @ 112:

I thoroughly agree on the “colo(u)r desaturation” thing they’ve been on for the last couple of years. Besides the (generally) excellent content, it wouldn’t kill them to give us excellent video and audio quality. Right?

As regards the TG track, if memory serves it was designed by Lotus (or Lotus people) and therefore it favo(u)rs cars that are more nimble. This explains why the Abarth 500 can manage a lap quicker than the Alfa 8C or the Maserati Coupe’, etc.

In the case of the Bugatti Veyron, you could SEE it trying to deal with the eleventy gazillion kgs. (or lbs. or stone or whatever) it has to carry. My guesstimate is that a place like the Nurburgring or some of the other race tracks the show has visited are a fairer venue for comparison. Yes, yes, yes…I KNOW IT’S NOT FEASIBLE. But still.

    Really did enjoy this show.

My theory is that the “even” shows are better than the “odd” shows. But that’s just a theory.

I knew all along that the Veyron wouldn’t be the fastest car around Top Gear’s track. The car was built to rebirth the Bugati brand. I think that even those who designed the car knew it wouldn’t be fast on the track, that is why they waited 2 years before leting someone test the car on TG track.

Anyway, last time I wrote I didn’t get the chance to congratulate James on his first test out on the track.. Well done James :D Fantastic job, I think it’s safe to say, we all loved it.

I’ve also had time to reflect on the Bugatti’s Laptime and I am indeed not surprised. But it looked so good going round the track, It’s so well controlled

I never would have expected the vw.. eh Bugatti to be the fastest. It’s a heavyweight compared to the Gumpert. The Veyron is not a car for the track, when it came out people compared it to Schumacher’s F1 car. Absolutely no relation, this is a different kind of “car”. It has all the luxuries in the world as well as all the mass of it. I’d love to see the W16 in a different body though. I m not saying the Veyron isn’t good but it’s not made for the racetrack. If I’m not mistaking the Amazing Nissan GTR beat it on the Ring by some seconds. On the other hand the Pagani is the opposite: it doesn’t look conservative, it has much more madness and much less mass, it was buildt soul first and mind later whereas the veyron was buildt mind first and they forgot the soul. However if those two where to race on the street the Veyron would smash the Zonda due to it probably being able to absorb bumps thanks to it’s German origin. Those are different hypercars and both are on top of their league no matter what one says. And by the way congratulations for the Great show. There are some cars though which they havent tested which could be in the <1.19 level: the Melling Hellcat for instance. They should test the SSC Ultimate Aero TT aswell although i doubt wether it would beat the scuderia-lp-gtr group. I have read of a car the Barabus TKR (Not Brabus) which is supposed to do 62 in 1.67 and reach 430km/h so it’d be intersting if anyone knew more about it.

Sooooo disappointed about the Veyron. I’m a really big fan of it and couldnt wait to see it hit the TG test track. Although i did think the Bug did look a little sluggish compared to the Zonda F – James May is right, maybe the Veyron is just too heavy.

The Zonda still got owned in the Drag race though :p and that car is still mega quick!
The Veyron deserves another chance, the Koenigsegg CCX had another go and did better with the TG wing.

If you think about it, this whole veyron thing is not much of a surprise. An F1 car doesnt go 407kmh, but no one would be surprised to see it slay the veyron. Thats a stupidly extreme analogy but still, point made. Its just too heavy and too “normal” to be quick throught the twistys. Like said earlier, its got air con, radio, all the gear. I wonder if its the fastest proper road going supercar, with all the luxuries, around the track. Theres a thought…

I am a big fan of TG and I feel like there is something wrong with the making of the car test videos since s11. IMO, the best videos i can think of are: the CCX, Zonda F, TVR Sagaris and Ascari A10. and if u are a big fan, u can tell it is slightly different from the old ones. I actually felt that the F430 Scuderia vid is less exciting than the F430 one.

Just because the veyron didn’t get to the top of the board, doesn’t mean thats its slow. think about it, every car above it on the board, and some bellow it are all stripped, no luxury super cars. And yet the Veyron can still get that high on the board with all the luxuries still in it, in my mind it makes it a greater car considering its weight.

Any way, the creation of the veyron wasn’t to be the fasted around a track, it was to be the fasted accelerating, highest top speed, and to have the fasted breaking time, which it does very well!

I found sundays adition of TopGear very interesting and informative however there was a little bit of a let down at the end when the Bucati Vayron came 5th to the Zonda. If the STIG had gone around the track without the airbrake on he would have probably gone quicker. Say half a second quiker. So even if he hadd’nt smashed the leaderboard he would have put the Zonda to shame. Please, please, please do the lap again without the airbrake. Fact is, you can’t just drop it into the body work and set off. Anymore then a slight turn on the wheel or a dab on the brakes brings it straight back up again.

Wow 295 not quite 300 but close enough
To be honest, i wasn’t surprised by the results in any of the tests, well no, the jag was astonishing, I think it would have been great had Clarkson really run out of petrol right outside his house.
Though I didn’t find the lap times to far from reality, and I think it definitely was the weight, but also one other thing. The bugatti is all-wheel-drive. Notably the fastest AWD car in the world, but surely the AWD had to bog down the bugatti in the corners, while it provides for a super fast start, it would hinder the corners with understeer. The current top four cars are all rear wheel, and f1 cars are also rear wheel as is the standard. So maybe that has something to do with it?
So call me crazy but I think that for the bugatti to be the top, they need to nix the AWD.

    Just a thought : )

Wow, seriously, you people are surprised that the Veyron was slower than the Zonda. Do you know absolutely nothing about cars. I would expect the TG fans to actually know something about cars, but alas we see they are mostly ignorant. So, lets run down the reasons of why this shouldn’t have been surprising:

    1. Veyron was made to break a speed barrier. To be the fastest production car (that is fastest, top speed, in a straight line) ever made.

    2. The Veyron is fat and heavy. How many times have we seen companies lighten windshields, seats, mufflers, wheels, roofs, hoods, engines, through out radios, automatic windows & etc. just for the sake of saving a few kilograms to help the car perform better. But Bugatti didn’t really do any of this.

Given these two reasons alone it should have been obvious that the Veyron was not going to be the fastest vehicle around the track. It is all wrong and it just isn’t a track car. What is it then? Well it is, a status symbol a way for those with the means to show off what they can buy, an investment to some of those people, but it was definitely never made to be driven regularly and most of these will never see the open road let alone a track.

You never know how bad the crash was to cause that dent on the Veyron. It could’ve done something to it that made it lap so slow. Top Gear, do it again, but this time try not to be ambitious but rubbish. Get Lewis Hamilton down to take it round, i bet it will be at the top then.

Just to answer Bondy’s comment (no. 204) James is not the Stig, he can’t be, they are not the same shape, or height, for that matter.

Also, he said that they have never been in the same scene together. YES THEY HAVE. For a start, they were together in a scene during the Britcar 24 hour race, AND also, what about the race across London?

And before anyone questions that, yes it is the same Stig, as he is the same shape and height in those scenes as he always is. So there.

I love TG, watched it for years, I also love the Veyron but some comments above are a bit OTT, “gutted it didn’t win, devistated it didn’t come top, dissapointed it didn’t break the track record”.

How many of you lot have a Veyron ?, how many of you are going to buy one ?, probably no-one for both answers.

It’s a car, a great looking car, brilliant in a straight line, brilliant in the race with the truffel but it got beaten around the track by a Zonda, ofcourse it will get beaten, the Zonda is much lighter and is designed for driving like last night, Veyron designed for a fast straight line race which it thrashed the Zonda.

I’m as dissapointed in it as the majority of you but it’s one race, one TV program, i’m not devistated, gutted it didn’t come top, because the ways it’s designed and built, it shouldn’t come top going head to head with lighter cars.

Still a great car and yes , maybe is the brake spoiler was down it might have gone faster but still wouldn’t have gone fastest.

Great show, great car, great presenters. end of…

I think that the stig could push the veyron harder id didnt look fast and in a strait line bugatti can really unleash that power and in the corners you could se that he didnt perform to the max you could say that the owner was looking to much and the stig was nervus.

The Veyron is most definitely the better car. I’m surprised it didn’t come first because of 4WD – better cornering and take-off, and better braking, acceleration (as proven in the drag race), better everything really.

Still, they should get a Sang Noir or Pur Sang Veyron on TG, could be faster.

Plus, the Zonda F is a great car, but they should get the final Zonda special, the Cinque. It would probably trash everything. The Veyron is still my favourite car though. No Zonda could ever be.

ALSO THE AIR BRAKE WOULDNT BE ABLE TO OPPERATE AND IT COULDN’T BRAKE AS FAST! THE SPOILER IS VITAL FOR THE FASTEST POSSIBLE TIME!! SO PLEASE STOP SUGESSTING TO PUT IT DOWN.

AND! THE SPOILER DOESN’T AFFECT THE POWER OF THE CAR, THE CAR REACHES TOP SPEED WITH IT DOWN BECAUSE ITS MORE AEORODYNAMIC. BUT THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH TRACK RACING!

DO YOU NOT THINK THAT THE TOP GEAR PRODUCTION TEAM,(OR THE STIG) WOULD KNOW HOW TO GET THE FASTEST POSSIBLE LAP.

The 2nd key to put the spoiler down in a veyron is for straight line performance people. that is done to make it as slippery as possible, that means to make it aerodynamic. for cornering you need downforce, therefore you need a spoiler to push the car down for traction….!!!
also just for the record, the aero hyper V8 fast one from usa will never be as good as a veyron. try driving that from italy to london. i promise you would end up in a hedge somewhere!

Start the veyron with its wing down, and soon as the stig touches the break, the wing will rise, as james demonstrated in Germany with the top speed test. The main reason why I was shocked was because of the caparo T1. That understeered wildly, but stig still did a 1:10, and the veyron, whose acceleration and braking is the same, did a 1:18.

Maybe they should use the 1001 bhp veyron rather than the one with less power but a DSG gearbox.

Whatever the reason, I was shocked!!!

the veyron not on the top is the reason for VW not wanting it on the track in the first place i recon. they knew it wouldnt be fastest and thought why bother?! why cant it just be the best GT-car ever. still is for me anyways!

Overall a really good episode. Reminds me of why I started watching Top Gear. It presented realistic situations with humorous presentation. No one got hit in the head with bricks doing a dangerous and unfunny bit of sketch comedy. I was not surprised by the Veyron not doing so well. In fact, it did better than I would have thought as it is essentially a top speed car and not a track day car. It is a marvelous piece of engineering, but it does everything well without being too compromised in the area of comfort for performance. It is still an excellent time for a car that does everything as well as it does. The Gumpert may be faster, but the Veyron would still be the one I would want to own. It’s simply a better car. I just wish James had gotten to finish introducing the Stig.

Another awesome show! But the veyron wasn’t the fastest on your track?! Say what?! The Zonda was actually faster? That’s quite odd.

Anyway, good segment on fuel economy too. Who knew that saving gas could be dull yet fun at the same time? Maybe in a future segment you should test how long the veyron and the zonda last on a 700 mile trip on one tank of gas.

The Veyron Is still the fastest car ever on topgear and the best looking. I dont care wat any1 says. the Veyron is and always will b the best car ever made…..

The Veyron was never going to beat the Zonda round the track due to the massive weight difference 1.2 tons of Zonda and 1.9 tons of Bugatti. Having said that though the fact it was even close is due to the Veyron’s frankly amazing ability to put down its power. I’ve seen a few people saying how it almost looks sluggish but it’s that control and ability to put power intot use that allows that very heavy car to compete with cars almost half the weight. Have to remember every time that Zonda slips it’s wasted power, 850bhp doesn’t mean anything if only 500 can hit the ground. Definitely would like to see Bugatti do a stripped out lightweight version if it is possible without comprimising the current setup…if they could knock a quarter ton off there then I think we’d see sparks fly!

You only have to look at the Nurburgring times to see that the Veyron was never going to get to the top of the board:

    Zonda F 7 min 32 sec (1′ 18.4″)
    Veyron 7 min 40 sec (1′ 18.3″)

So, over 14 miles, the Veyron is 0.1 seconds faster. The TG test track is short and has several tight corners where the Veryon’s weight will slow it down. Stands to reason that over a short lap like that the Zonda would be faster.

The Veyron is like two cars rolled into one. In low drag mode with no rear spoiler and the suspension lowered, it’ll go fast in a straight line with with no downforce to aid cornering. Put it in handling mode with the spoiler up and the suspension raised, it’ll corner better but the added drag knocks 20mph off the top speed.

The Veyron has got a lot of power,is fast in a straight line and has an air brake . It costs £875000 as well. The Zonda is lighter, nimbler, has a better PTW ratio, looks stupider and breaks down more than the Bug. The Zonda is half a second quicker around the track than the veyron which i’m not surprised at because the fat German one weighs nearly two tonnes. Why would anyone have a Veyron now when the Zonda is quicker on a track and slightly cheaper?

The Veyron is an amazing car. 253 Mph in relative comfort. But the comfort and weight ruins it’s cornering, you could see the under steer, and hear the squeal.

However, the Veyron could be a great pedastool for a future super car. I’d be very interested to see Bugatti use the same engine in a lower, lighter car. They could even simply do a stripped down version. More carbon fiber, cut out the silly suspension and lose the hefty interior. I have no doubt they could shed 500kg.

That Zonda is incredable, weldone James for the test drive.

But….My god, the Veyron…What happened there? So now we know why Bugatti wouldn’t let Top Gear take it around the track…It’s not as fast as everyone thinks. That’s got to be one of the most disapointments in car history!!!

When I watched it go round the first few corners, you could tell it wasn’t going to be that fast, (I say wasn’t going to be that fast…), you know what I mean. Good for straight line speed & acceleration, I doubt theres no road car can touch it, but for going round corners…No-no.

    You know,….

Watching James doing the power tests was really cool. He gives a totally different perception in the terms of how he does convey the idea about the magical Zonda. Apart from Jezza of being a big kid with a big toy. I though that James in the other hand gave the words and addressing to the people who actually have the cash and would consider buying such a machine, but a the same time he kept this TVShow-environment COOL to the 14yrs old.

Would love to see James more often on the track with some nice machines to drive. I think he has his own special way to say things just like Clarkson and Hammond.

However, I also would like to thank to the Production staff and every single one who make this show a truly quality TV Show. TV not for commercial purposes or profit. But Quality Television with Passion for the art.

Now the biggest Shock I’ve recive is the whole Bugatti Veyron being 1:18.3 -WHAT- Yes I know, Is a lot heavier than the Paganni Zonda, but come on!.

Then Again, the TG test track is kind of special, it’s for agile cars more than anything, big cars like the Veyron probably would be better of in bigger tracks.

Even America’s best car, the “All American” Ford GT had British bits in it, some of which were done by a couple of guys from Lotus….Just think of it as an P-51 Mustang, the best bit was British.

We could all see and hear the Yelling of the Veyrons wheels. Seemed as if the car is too “computerised” for its own good, and would not allow its driver to commit any foul play.

Looking at the stigs lap again and again… seemed as if the car wouldn’t “let go”. no sliding, no drifting, and no drama… but my GOD, what a devine engine sound !!!

I’m not surprised with the Veyron not being the fastest, as it’s not an uncompromising racecar-ish car as the Gumpert, Zonda F, Koenigsegg. In my opinion it’s more like the Mercedes-Benz Gullwing, it’s more about the glamour and I adore both cars for that. But the Veyron is not a race car, it’s just too heavy. Nimble wasn’t a word in the Bugatti vocabulary when they built the Veyron, the-most-powerful-car and fastest-production-car was on the other hand. I think it’s the upped duel of, say a Corvette and an Atom, the Veyron vs. Zonda duel. The Corvette and the Veyron’d go seriously fast in a straight line, but in the corners they’ll be overtaken by the lighter, more nimble cars. Like curling really, easy going straight, but when you’ll have to turn, it gets really messy – especially if you’re carrying a lot of weight.

i was amazed when both of the cars but i was shockd the veyron wasnt the fastest thing to go around the track, but also you have got to remenba that the car is about 2 tons so that is going to effect how it coners also the veyron is built for staright line speed because notice every test has bn on a stright line so they can get the top speed out of it

I think Veyron fans can accept the defeat in an other way. If when the Veyron was first show on TG, Bugatti would have letted Top Gear race it on the track it would have ended up… 1st. Simply because the Koenigsegg with the TG wing was shown in 2007, and the 3 others after… Making the Veyron a former “fastest around the track”. Only Bugatti didn’t lend their car.

I think if Jeremy sees this he will be less disapointed.

If Bugatti did a light weight Veyron then it would easily be the fastest. Its just because its too heavy. Remeber the Zonda F is made entirely by carbon fibre. I don’t think they Veyron has any carbon fibre at all and the veyron has lots of equipment and safety features which adds a lot of weight. Please Bugatti make a light weight version :D then make the stig drive it against the Typhoon fighter! It was very close the last time :p

OK first things first James Awesome and Frankly hilarious drive of the Zonda but get a new wardrobe cause if you need Stig to drive for you again those colours really dont suit him.
Ok next Jeremy, Mr Clarkson we all knew the bug would be a big fat lump round the track it cant put the power down its not a skittish little racer, it is a comfortable stylish exquisitely made state of the art super sports car. It was like comparing a the new Type R with the old one we all knew the old one would beat it round a track because its lighter and the handling is set up and more capable for being chucked round a few corners.
Thirdly and finally I love u guys i always have and always will not in a creepy im coming to get you way I always watch Top Gear even on Dave yes I am one of those people you could offer me a job if you like i probably know more about cars than Hammond! sorry Richard

    I reckon also additionally to taking the back bit of the VEYRON that helps it braking, through being an obstacle against the air when braking, and so brakes;
i reckon when taking off the roof of the veyron or making it a light convertible, it will lower the centre of gravity level in the Veyron, and so it will be more heavier towards the ground, giving it good grip, the risk of spinning upside done round and round, is reduced.

And again additionally making the whole body out of carbon fibre, all this changes must make the veyron lighter, give more pull towards the ground, and make it more nimbler in the corners, sliding its way through the corners.

    You need proof? Well look again, at the lap race between Bugatti Veyron and Bugali Zonda;

Wasn’t the roof of the Zonda, down???

i’ve been watching a whole lot of car movies and can not believe that the veyron gets beaten by the zonda f roadster. ok, the zonda is lighter and has more hp per tonn, but the veyron is just to quick of the line to lose…
how it is possible that the veyron is that much quicker in a drag race but has no advantage of this on a track?

u can see the veyron is so undramatic in the corners and loses because of this.

i think also that the Stig is paid of by VW to make him not trash their prescious car.

If just Top Gear could test the veyron without the traction control turned on, it would win!
please let the Stig rip the veyron to pieces with aggressive driving, no TC and the power upgrade that VW has announced and i would bet u anything it would be on the top.
    Guaranteed!!

I was almost willing the Veyron to come top, despite never having warmed to it, primarily because it looks so bad. It was a bit of a surprise though, but then again, the Gumpert is intended solely for that kind of thing.

The Episode was absolutely hilarious and a good old fun. It was great seeing James doing a power test to none other than the Zonda F and the Blackpool race was really entertaining (although at low speed)

That being sad, I just can’t believe the Veyron didn’t cream everyone else on the Power Lap Board! I just can’t believe it…

But let’s face it…I think it is still undeniable that the Veyron is the King out there. I mean in the real world, in a real race let’s say from London to Italy, all those other cars on the Lap Board don’t stand a chance! They will either explode or make you feel sick. And in any case wouldn’t get as fast and as comfortable and as entertaining to your destination.

The Veyron is still the King.

The Zonda is in many ways better than the Veyron. The Veyron is just a big, heavy Volkswagen with a W16. Its purely a car for Americans, that want to show off and go fast in a straight line.

How did the stig (some say he is James May’s long lost brother)not manage to get the veyron to the top of the power board? I reckon that they should have sent him back out to do a faster time than what he did as the car is incredibly fast and should in theory be the top because of its stats: Top Speed of 252mph; 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and a braking force of 1.3G’s. How did the Veyron fail? Why wasn’t Stig driving better than he was? I was severly disgusted by the lap time. Do it again Stig.

Absolutely lost for words… I was sure that the sheer power of the bugatti would make it go around in around 1;14… if you have ever seen a video on the speedometer of the bugatti, it keeps on going up at the same rate as most ferraris accelerate 0-100, i mean yes, the bugatti is nearly 2 tons with the stig in it (or is it) and its not the best cornering car in the world. But come on I expected ALOT more from the bugatti. The whole technology of VW and all the companies it owns was beaten by SWEDES and the koeniggsegg ccx (awesome car by the way, its just we finns dont like swedes)

Clarkson is an c***, he could have won the economy race easily and in style. That would be a great finalle for the show (the scrip writer is loosing the grip). Otherwise the show was great as always.

“Commander slow” looks good with the white halmet (hehe)!

PS – Please give the three guys from Top Gear Australia a deadly challenge so they die in it. The three of them preferably – they really suck. They could try and generate a style of their own as they are they a lame copy of Top Gear…really bad!

Although it was surprising that the Veyron wasn’t the fastest ever, James was right you know. Back end weight let it down I reckon. Plus, it makes 529bhp per tonne. If its got 1001bhp then it must weigh nearly 2 tonnes! As for the economy race… Top Gear? Economy? Whats going on. Great show though.

im not surprised the veryron didnt go top, if u look at the interior its full of leather and stuff. all the faster cars have stripped out interiors and are dedicated racers whereas the veyron is too much of a luxury car. as the ariel atom proved, you dont need a huge amount of power to be fast around the track, weight has a much greater effect

Well, I trully believe that the car’s stability and traction controls were enabled during the powerlap. Maybe that was an imposition from bugatti, maybe it was off and there was only grip holding 1000bhp to the road like that…

Well if the Yanks had built it properly…It wouldn’t have broke for him would it? You Yanks still can’t build cars after, how many years have you been building cars? Or shall I say; ” Attempting to build”.

So which country designed/made a pen that cost $900.000 so it can be used in zero gravity? Cough* USA cough* Russia just spent 20p on a pencil from a local shop. Now thats THICK…Of the Yanks!

loved the show, the race was actually very interesting, but worried about the accuracy of the big Jag’s fuel guage and trip computer if there was sufficient fuel left to power it for another 120 miles !! sort it out Jag. James in the Zonda was poor, half of the good stuff was done by the Stig. Get rid of the ‘Star in a reasonably priced car’ bit…pointless, boring, and the bit I often turn over to Heartbeat to miss, its only there so the guests can promote something and tell the world just how much up their own backside they really are. Here’s an idea…any chance of a road-test on a car and not a hyper-car for once, you know a road, the thing that the majority of us drive on, the tarmacy pot-holled stuff between the grass verges. I personally don’t care how fast a car can go round the track, that means nothing to me, what i would love to know is what a car is like to drive…on the road, what’s its like to live with. Don’t dumb down like Fifth Gear do but I’m sure you can inject some TG humour into it. Love the races and the challenges, always look forward to them. Just get rid of SIARPC quick, that’s the worst bit of the show.

The buggati veyron is a very fast car, theres no doubting that, but im not surprised that it wasnt fastest, the fact that it took vw this long to give it a chance shows their confidence in the machiene, its just to heavy, that small amount of understeer in preety much every corner was what did it. Also the veyron isnt that amazing in terms of power or speed anymore, the 9ff gets simerler power from a flat 6!

Although, Bugatti is the best overall car between the Zonda and if you dont believe me, watch that clip of the drag race again :)

Those two episodes truely represent the essence of the show, where the cars are the center and the humor is the topping.

Regarding the Zonda vs. Veyron, I must say that I am somewhat disappointed yet I particularly like the sound to the Zonda. Simply blistering. It made me think of that Ferrari/Shell ad. If I had the money, I would buy one simply for the sound it makes.

The veyron seems to be designed as more of a GT than other cars like the gumpert. And as shown on fifth gear, it handles and slides well with the traction conntrol off, but it doesnt dance. Clarkson would never have driven a zonda in the race with the plane a few years ago coz he would have had no buttocks left, but in the veyron he was very comfortable.

Watching the Bugatti getting beaten was like watching somebody peeing on an altar, but it was amazingly satisfying to know that England is higher on that board than Bugatti. Go Ascari A10! And how’d you like our old Jag going Switzerland to Blackpool on a single tank?

I’d like to see the Koenigsegg CCXR on the show. Hell, if they are having economy races, they might as well bring in the biofuel Scandinavian monster and thrash it about a bit. That’s a true Veyron killer if ever I saw one.

its obvious that the stig didnt rag the veyron because it has to be borrowed off someone. btw thats were the dent came from. blame the owner

James was better than Hammond but not even a fraction as good as Clarkson.
It made a nice change, hopefully we will see more of James May doing POWER tests.

When May said “We all loved the Zonda in series 1!”, what was he talking about. I mean if he was on series 1, he would know, but he wasn’t!

Anyway, glad the Veyron came 5th. It really doesn’t deserve the first place.

No great surprise the Veyron was beaten. It was built to have 1000bhp, not to go fast around a track. As for the economy race, I loved it. It proves you don’t need 500bhp cars roaring across Europe to make good TV, but obviously TG need to redress the balance next time! Great show

TG please remove every 1 top gear is. I can’t believe you have allowed it to remain there. It is childish, insulting and not deserving of being posted. And the poster – use the off button next time

not being an expert on the subject, but the Veyron did look like it had it’s TC on, there wasnt much squirming or twitching ,it looked too controlled. I’ve seen the 5th gear where they turn the TC off. if they didnt allow them to turn to TC off then thats stupid. and yes, why the 2 year wait? they should have just let them do the lap back then when it came out.
great episode, perhaps a some clarity from the TG boys about the TC would be good?

Aww Nic, c’mon… U never heard about 4×4?
I never believed for a sec the Bug would be fast at all. I mean, two tonnes of medieval cannonball? Unstoppable in a straight line, but anywhere else it just hád to suck big time. So I was positively surprised it did so well. I doubt it would’ve stayed on track without the TC.
Having it on the track has to be a truly historic feat tho. I wonder whose strings were lovingly pulled.

not complaining that it didnt come out tops, didnt expect that, it’s not a out and out track car. was just wondering about the TC, of course i know it’s 4 wheel drive:P

i ll bet you my 1989 ibiza diesel with several different colors of chassis (beeing king’s gold, grey, and brownrust on the sides) is cheaper (500€), more economical, much more fun to drive, and..
people love you. you can crash in there garden because your steering wheel has come of, and they still love you. All things modern eco engine powered business loveboat’s can’t do.
it has got some little irritating quality: you have to enter it thru the trunk, and you have to manually electrocute the glowcandles using a bit of wire, or a piece of someone’s fence. i have to mention you can only do so by opening the car’s hood using a lighter. also, mirrors tend to fall off at 150 km/h. driving over speedbumps may open the windows, and you have to steer right to go straight ahead. the device to wash the windows is pointed at pedestrians.

i hereby offer my car to jeremy, because i tried to kill it, but it wouldn’t.

greetings from belgium. And next war, we ll come over and help you lot.

    London – Edinburgh: Audi A8 4.2 TDI

I think the Veyron should go round again in the right weather the right settings because the stig was braking alot the wing kept coming up slowing him down i was shocked when it was put in 6th place.

The veyron is brilliant but the zonda steals the show for me and the lap time just proves it.
