Jeremy being on The One Show this evening reminded us of Hammond’s recent stints on other telly shows; Paul O’Grady and Radio Five Live. He talked on the latter show to Simon Mayo about, among other things, what he thinks of speed cameras. Have a look here:

I have to agree with everything Richard said here about how stupid (not his exact words, that’s my description) people can be on the road and those are the ones who shouldn’t be allowed to drive. I hate tail gaters more than anything in the world. They rank right up there with murderers in my book as most hated people in the world – and they’re getting away with it all the time. Anyone who speeds through a school zone deserves hollow points as well as points on their license. Those are children they’re putting in danger and setting a bad example for. Well done, Richard, on not only shutting Simon up, but making a great, intelligent point. You’re my hero.

What possible reason could there be for not allowing non-UK viewers to see a YouTube clip of Hammond on another show? Seriously, what possible commercial purpose could this conceivably serve?
I used to travel daily across the junction of the A556 & A49 where there are 4way traffic lights. If you got there just as they turned red you had a 4/5 minute wait, Last year there was a power cut and there wasn’t a single car waiting – I slowed down, looked and carried on my way. Beautiful. We need systems to speed traffic flow, not to stop it.
I live in Swindon. Well, JUST outside. I think the Richard is right, and, even though I’m not old enough to drive, I think that people should be able to say what they think would work in terms of keeping the road safe.
I watched a bit of the One Show last night with Jeremy Clarkson, I nearly fell off the sofa I was laughing so hard when they showed that clip of him with Mr Blobby! (Couldn’t tell which was which.. lol)
On a more serious note: I applaud and agree wholeheartedly with what Richard said on the radio show about dangerous drivers and how people should be made to take an advanced driving test to improve their skills and shouldn’t be limited to those who can afford to drive but on the skill of the driver themselves. We must put a stop to w****kers on the road who tailgate, speed and drive dangerously on the road!
I wish I could say Richard was right or wrong but I’m in Australia and can’t watch the videos any more. What genius came up with that idea? This is how to turn fans away in droves. Come on, Top Geat crew, do something to fix this or you’ll have fans leaving like you wouldn’t believe.

I was done by a mobile camera van in wales, for doing 34mph in 30mph on a country lane going down a steep hill the van was setup at the bottom to catch people out

Comment 12 – totally agree and I think it should also be extended to cars. I remove traction control and train people how to really control a car in an emergency and learn to respect it and the potential dangers and you will get people to use their brain more. cruise control should also be banned.

It’s really annoying that fans are blocked out of the show …. As if it would be a bad thing for the show to allow foreigners to watch the show. The fans get to know the BBC and fund it in different ways.

I agree, I am from the UK and work all over the world and still I have to pay for my TV license whether I am in the country or not. I enjoy having a laugh at TG. As it is said, it is the fans that make the programme. No fans no programme!!! I wonder how 5th gear treats their fans?? LOL

Unfortunately Hammond is becoming far removed from everyday life. There are too many cars on the road to cobble the streets and resort to allowing users to “think for themselves.”
I say derestric the M1, M4 style roads on dry, clear days, build more roads, increase funding for roadworks – thus reducing the dire economic impact that endless traffic jams create – and build more pedestrian crossings near schools (or put up barriers). Our ability to get places and live our lives is what makes the country work, and we should encourage more motoring in this economic climate.

For those, like me, who live in the US: I feel your pain. I do. I think geoblocking videos sucks. Oddly enough, however, the video of Jeremy’s appearance on Simon Mayo — which took place about a week after Richard was on, as I recall — works just fine Stateside. Methinks the Five Live channel on Youtube was picking and choosing which videos were available worldwide and which ones are geoblocked. Or something. Like I said, I think it sucks. (Conversely, some US videos on websites are geoblocked to outsiders.)
Anyway, I’ve listened to the full interview (I was able to find audio of it elsewhere); and I think Richard’s points were excellent and well-made. He was saying that speed cameras are good at catching people speeding; but they do nothing to address the true dangers of motoring, the ability of the drivers who get caught, the appropriateness of the speed at that given time, and that speed doesn’t actually kill anyone (addressing the “Speed Kills” campaign of the British government…if speed killed, Richard would be dead) — that it’s accidents, selfishness, inappropriate speed, carelessness, and thoughtlessness on the road that kills (driving fast through a school zone, tailgating…basically, idiot motoring in general). Also, talking about looking for other ways to convince drivers/motorists to take driving more seriously, as it’s a major privilege to have — like making the current driving test more difficult, or even allowing licensed drivers to take the advanced motoring test after three years.
(I hope that explanation makes sense!)

I’m in the US, I want to watch BBC programming. I understand that British taxpayers are helping to support the BBC, and I respect that. Please allow me to have a brainwave then. Can the I just pay the BBC my own little “tax fee”? That way it’s all fair right? I’m paying my share and I get BBC shows as a result.
Anyway, it’s just a thought. Maybe it would be too difficult to execute, who knows. Though you’d think with the global appeal of TopGear and Dr. Who that the BBC could make a lot of money doing it.

just a message to “mark..supratwinturbo” the idea of topgear is to test production cars, something you could (given the money) go out and buy tomorrow! tuners are custom made, as you know, thus giving each tuned car different handling, acceleration braking and all in all different performance and other gizmos to play with. Personally, i think RH has a bloody good point, the lines need to be blurred somehow, maybe not as drastic as he said but something similar

Speed Cameras! A means for the muppets we voted in to make more money off the poor motorist. Lets have a campaign to get rid of them. Its a proven fact that speed does not KILL.
What about the Miloc’s (middle lane owners club) USE LANE ONE AND LET OTHERS PASS YOU, YOU CAN DO 70 MPH IN THE INSIDE LANE. What about when you are in lane one, TWO idiots are in lanes TWO and THREE and lane one is clear in front of you. What do you do? I know the answer, MAKE PROGRESS AS THE POLICE ARE TAUGHT, DO IT SAFELY AND PASS ON THE INSIDE. The only ones to complain are the Miloc’s. e.g. M61, 0315 hours, heading for M6, three lanes, you and another car in front sitting in lane TWO, You flash them, go round and back go into lane one. She (it had to be) stays in lane two whilst you disappear into the distance. BLOKES do it as well. Get a grip, USE YOUR MIRRORS!!!

I know how much you guys like carrying out experiments. Perhaps you can you have a look at this and see if it is possible, if so will it discredit the SAFETY SPEED CAMERA.
I’ll use imaginative Mr. X as the driver.
Travelling along the Motorway at a steady 75mph Mr. X thought he would try out his New Audi R8 and give it a bit of welly, accelerating really hard from 3rd gear in to 4th he noticed the old SPEED CAMERA SAFETY Van on the approaching bridge approx 500 metres away. Instantly looking at his speedo, the digital display showed he was travelling at 98mph; he applied the brakes immediately slowing the car down to 75mph as he drove under the bridge.
Expecting a Notice of Intended Prosecution in the post for a maximum of 98mph, 3 Points and the £60 fine imminent, 7 days to the date it arrives only showing the alleged speeding offence as 109mph which was totally unexpected. The car speed limit alert was set to 100mph and this did not activate at any time.
He then thought hard about previous discrepancies that had been advertised with the hand held speed cameras. These showed static objects such as park benches and trees that were targeted by the speed camera and they were shown travelling at some speed albeit 10 or 15mph, apparently this was achieved if the operator pushed the speed gun towards the stationary object as it was activated. Whilst it’s understood that it’s not possible for the Safety Camera Van operator to physically push his gun towards the oncoming traffic as it’s firmly secured to a sturdy tripod within the van.
Doesn’t the effect of the oncoming vehicle accelerating very hard have the same effect as the speed camera operator pushing the gun towards the oncoming vehicle and giving a false reading? It’s understood if the vehicle was travelling at a steady speed of 30, 40, 70, 90 etc that the reading over the timed intervals that the gun operates would be relatively accurate, but if this speed was to change dramatically between the checks on the speed gun surely this would provide an untrue reading. If this is the case wouldn’t this be a big problem for them?
Please can you let me know your thoughts and if this is something you would be able to conduct an experiment on to prove it right or wrong.

I think (not certain though)that the city that Hammond is referring to is Freiburg in Germany. And the system there does work. Thing is though, the Germans are sensible – imagine doing that sort of thing on Picadilly!
I agree with Hammond on the point of stopping selfish and thoughtless drivers.
How about having a practical re-test, every five years, no exceptions, and if you want attachments (driving a van, towing a caravan or a trailer), you have to prove that you can handle it.
Note on thoughtless and selfish drivers, most of them I have noticed tend to drive 4 by 4’s, BMW’s and other expensive saloons, there attitude seems to be that, “in the event of an accident, i’ll be fine, and you’ll die, so you’d better back off, even though you have right of way”.
If speed is such a killer, why aren’t all vehicles mechanically or electronically limited to 70mph, just a thought!!!

Hmmm…interesting ideas from Hamster on tackling dangerous driving. I like the free race track idea…that could work!
Here’s my idea:
1. We should make the driving test much harder and include advanced car control and an IQ test…that would get rid of the incompetent drivers straight away! It’s those people who insist on driving at 40mph on the motorway because they are either scared, incapable or just plain stupid that in my experience cause most of the dangers on the roads. This would also help reduce the amount of young people/new drivers killed on back roads as they are unable to control their cars adequately.
2. Make the inner 2 lanes of the motorway for cars only. Increase the speed limit and enforce a minimum speed limit to prevent cars travelling at vastly different speeds (another huge cause of accidents) People will be given points for travelling outwith a specified speed range (I suggest 80-120mph). The left lane would be used for HGVs and other slow moving vehicles (no overtaking allowed..haha!)
Obviously there are a few points to be ironed out, like how the cars are going to get up to 80mph in the left lane before joining the middle lane when it’s full of slow moving vehicles…I’m working on that one!
I think Jezza should make me his Minister of Transport when he’s Prime Minister…i’m on to something, lol!

This video, like so many others at Top Gear, isn’t viewable in my part of the world, due to ‘copyright restrictions’. What copyright restrictions would this be? Are they under the impression that there is some ban in allowing videos to be seen outside Britain? If it’s something to do with TG not yet being broadcast overseas, why should such a restriction also cover items like a Hammond radio interview? This sort of thing will never be played overseas, so why the restriction? I believe that TG/BBC would gain much more in public approval if they were to not be so precious over such trivial copyright matters.
