Series 12 may be over, but there’s one more calorie-filled slice of Top Gear goodness to look forward to before the end of the year: a 75-minute Vietnam special on BBC Two on December 28 at 8pm.
Following last year’s trip to the North Pole, this time the boys are off somewhere slightly hotter… and the truly scary news is that they’ve ditched cars in favour of motorbikes. Yes, you’re going to get to see Jezza on two wheels. That’s like seeing Alex Ferguson in a Manchester City kit. And high heels.
Still, judging by The Mole’s sneak preview it’s going to be awesome. The challenge, as ever, was a simple one: get from the bottom of Vietnam to the top: a mere 800-mile journey.
With a budget of several million Vietnamese Dong to spend on their bikes, things were looking easy. But it turns out that several million Vietnamese Dong translates into ‘roughly enough money to buy a packet of crisps’, so the boys’ motorbikes ended up being, well, not quite the mighty steeds they had in mind.
Richard ended up on a Russian-built Minsk, James on a Honda Cub, and Jeremy – because he has no idea about anything with less than four wheels – a very fetching green scooter.
Of course, there were plenty of daring and deeply hilarious challenges along the way. Sadly the Mole has been sworn to secrecy, but we can reveal that the boys were in uncharacteristically generous gift-giving mood to each other. Large, bulky, difficult-to-carry-on-motorbikes gifts. Well, it’s the thought that counts.
So, if you do nothing else this Christmas (apart from eating too much, then overcooking things on the post-lunch booze and saying something regrettable to a prudish relative), make sure that you watch the Top Gear Christmas Special, on BBC Two, 28 December at 8pm.

After Jeremy’s frankly hilarious Vespa review in the Sunday Times a few weeks back, I think this is going to be one long 75-minute laugh…I may need a diaphragm transplant afterwards, but I can’t wait!

This series I think has been the funniest so far.
I can imagine that Clarkson is as happy on a motorbike as in a diesel engined Vauxhaull Vectra. Should be a classic!

The Vietnam episode looks absolutely fantastic, I can’t wait to see it, I reckon it’ll be well worth the wait. I saw a photo of Jezza on his bike on a makeshift raft made out of canoes on the sea, and if that photo is anything to go by, it’s gonna be a billiant episode.

I’ve been to Indonesia, but never Vietnam; I’m told the food is always either fabulous or ghastly; I’m not sure if I’d want to play a game of 50-50 chance of food poisoning with every meal I ate!
I think JC as a “motorbikist” will be hilarious – he’s spent years arguing with Hamster and James that their two-wheeled wonders are rubbish and dangerous. However, I have to say I’m with Jeremy on the subject – my cousins who are doctors do claim bikers as “organ donors waiting to happen”; even the sensible ones like our Capt Slow have no “buffer” of protection if hit by an idiot. Discounting Sept 2006, which was unforseeable, I’ve always thought that if Andy W. ever had to dust off his list of ‘potential new presenters’ it would be because of James or Richard’s motorbike riding.
And – yay – we 75 mins – but to quote James, why not do it properly and do 90 minutes! Given all the great TV potential inherent in filming in Vietnam of all places (communism-vs-Americanism , the incredible humidity, the fact that dog is on the menus, and Jeremy on a scooter) I’m sure there will be reams of fabulous footage. Presumably when the DVD of the Vietnam Special comes out (with the Botswana Special?) there will be ‘15 mins’ of ‘bonus footage’ to make it to 90? (Hint hint).
Several friends of mine have been having discussions (read: rows) about what other countries could have ’specials’, with Australia (one James clears up his little felony issue) &/or new Zealand coming out top of the vote, followed by China 2nd, India 3rd and joint 4th preference as Canada and Dubai (yes, I did explain that’s not a country, but they meant any relatively stable Middle Eastern country). NB – for myself, under no circumstances should Jezza, Hamster and the Capt attempt Malta. The Maltese are a beautiful people in all respects, but they really do “drive” (and I use that term loosely) as if someone had set their trousers on fire.

This series is in my opinion the best of all, the perfect mix between cars and the challenges and other funny stuff.

car,by law, therefore giving us lot a lot of laughs.Advice to those who are upset no cars you dont have to watch it. but the show is called Top Gear,no mention of cars there though Jezza did start somethin on those grounds

Why are the series becoming smaller? Longer ones required because Top Gear is just pure laughter, amusement and car world information all put nicely together.
I know you should have vacation (not that you deserve because of your job) but life without Top Gear isn’t quite fun as with it, every sunday hooked up on the show.

i have most the dvds and Jeremy Clarkson you are the best, you remind me of my dad who is 6ft 10 so even taller than Jeremy.
I think the series just gone wasn’t as funny as the other series in the past as they didn’t have as many challenges i.e racing the bugatti veyron against the flying washing machine (small plane). The best show this series was probably when the three of you had to buy a truck and do differnt challenges. ha ha ha.happy days

your show is great except the for the power lap times they are not accurate and the f1 board obviosly stigs going to be better hes done many times and james may has a brain and he is the coolest out of jezza and hamster
damn… I wanted to see MiG StiG (Stig’s communist cousin) go airborne especially in Jezza’s scooter, nothing funnier than to see Stig just do silly bunny hops.
It would be funny if the boys were to go from one side of Russia to the other considering Jezza and Slow did hate all the communist cars. Nothing more satisfying than to see desperation in an attempt to avoid driving them
