It’s a wipeout

Posted by The Mole at 1:50 pm on Saturday January 3, 2009

Total WipeoutRichard’s back on your telly tonight in his new It’s a Knockout-style gameshow, Total Wipeout.

The Mole told you about it a while back – it’s that padded extreme obstacle course hilarity with people so keen to get on TV they’ll happily get punched by plastic stuff and bounced off big padded balls into a cold water bath.

It’s proper Saturday night primetime entertainment stuff and if you’re a fan of our Hamster we’d recommend tuning in – not least to find out what challenges like Big Balls, the Sweeper and the Wipeout Zone actually are.

You’ll also get a laugh at each of the contestants fighting their way across the purpose-built course in Argentina, putting their ’strength, balance and bravery to the test’ in the hope of winning ten grand. Or, in reality, just making fools of themselves for our benefit.

So that’s Total Wipeout, tonight at 6.10pm on BBC One. It’s total knockout telly. And come back here to TopGear.com afterwards so we can talk about what you thought of it.

tonight sounds like its gonna be good coz i watched the American version on the site and its so funny especially when they think they’re brilliant but from the pic im guessing the English one will be much more safety mad with helmets and padding which will be fun but less funny
btw did anybody see Hammond’s new kids show?
kinda like brainiac but with children instead not as good but hes ok in it (bad coat though lol)

Ok it was fun, cheesy as heck, and just sarcastic enough BUT not quite my cuppa I am afraid. Too many contestants, too long, too brightly coloured. Too much!

That was funny. I hope they apologised to Elias for making a total joke out of him, funny as he was. And that fat bird who was supposed to be “The one and only”, just goes to show that it’s funnier when they’re full of themselves. Even funnier when she was really chuffed with a time of about 6 mins, when the top guys were doing it in about half that.

A strong rival to Gladiators. Actually, it’s better for being less serious. And not having really plastic and annoyingly orange people who act like they’re all that and end up looking like pillocks for it. And having no adverts.

What a great show, I haven’t laughed so much in ages!

Hammond is brilliant – they really should have let him use that commentating style on Formula 1, especially as he knows bugger all about it. I reckon they’ve missed a trick there.

It’s also one step closer to Top Gear and world domination, so it ticks all the boxes. ;)

    it was well good
I would love do do and wipe the faces of the lads faces. Where do you find these people anyway?

What would be even better though would be to have jezza, slow, hamster and stig battling it out. Fuuny. I’d would pay millions to see jeremy or james on the giant inflatable balls. Hehe

I must agree with moo point though. Bring back the waistcoat and ditch the long one hamster! :-)

I think that this show was very good. Inevertably there was going to be somebody similar to Miss Bournemouth!!! who just wears pink knee socks and hopes not to get them muddy. She also had a quite strange centre of gravity……landing quite literally on her front everytime the sweeper came. Richard presented this very well, and I loved the commentary of the bow and the perfect dive…Well done hamster

Wasn’t half as good as the American one. Mostly, I thought, due to one having one commentator. The two american guys were seriously funny at dryly mocking the contestants. Hammond is just an equivalent to Craig Charles in Takeshi’s Castle, or Harry Hill in You’ve been framed.

Did he actually go to Argentina?

    From Wikipedia:
    Obstacles
The obstacles will be like the ones of the American show.
    Format
The format will be like those of the American show.

Hammond by himself is just another talking head in a nice suit in some studio somewhere, seriously I know they’ve already taped a whole whack of shows but please find two people who can actually throw jokes back and forth at each other.I’ve watched the whole US series, and those announcers are D U M B dumb, but they are funny. Is he really that hard up for money he has to stoop to this level of mediocrity.

Coming from a Canadian point of view you have to have the sarcasm of Ed the Sock to achieve the purpose of the “talking head” of the series, make fun of the people who were stupid enough to do something they had no business in trying to accomplish.

Your tax dollars well spent, I think not.

Richard: You have one show, stay with that, and stop buying all those stupid cars and going into debt.

James and Jeremy: Please smack him across the head for selling out his image and get him into more crashmobiles.

FYI, I downloaded it from BitTorrent, but will not anymore.

Watching clumsy Overweight possibly obese people , falling down on several fake cheap imitations of T@keshi’s Castle; really is Idiocy made in Mr. Beane’s Head!!

I DID NOT DWELL MORE THAN 3 MIN AT ANY ONE TIME watching that stuff, popping in every 10 min to see if it gets any better, naaah not really.!

I don’t see why this Richard when he began to film the show, did not see what a disaster that is? Oh!! awefull, i thought he’s gonna do something explosive, flames mad stunts or just super challenges ect since he’s also known as ”Short Angry Bloke” – Let it all out, as he called himself a few series ago.

It’s a disaster made in hell; take it off da tv and replace it with Robin Hoods last series, this is a waste of space AND time. Even the part of America where people mate with vegtables could have come of something better.

I thought Richard was always just ”acting” Feeble-minded, but it seems to me that he is for real.

The low amount of comments here really say more than enough; only the utter NUTTERS who would spark into laughter, simply because they saw Richard yaaan in a slightly orckward way.

    Veg……

well unlike these pretentious idiots who mostly can’t even use the English language, and seem to think that everyone’s opinion MUST concur with their own, I have a sense of humour. And I thought that the show was ‘literally’ hilarious. Hammond’s p**s taking commentary was spot on also.

Incidentally, it was made searingly clear at the very start that Hammond was in a nice comfy studio instead of out in Argentina getting bitten by mosquitos.

look forward to the next episode. it is literally the one and only… well maybe not, but it is good telly.

Total Wipeout is the UK edition of a popular American TV show – also named ‘Wipeout’, and carries on in the very same vain. The shows center-piece is a hap-hazard foam obstacle course over which each contestant must run, jump, climb and scramble over, with the fastest going on to receive a worthwhile sum of money. Those longing for the return of ‘It’s a knockout’ will find the humour and pace pretty similar, and know what to expect.

As usual with this type of Saturday evening family fun, the experience is played strictly for laughs; and while not being the most intellectually stimulating, there is nothing here that you couldn’t leave the kids joyfully entertained in front of for half an hour. Richards comments are sarcastic and genuinely funny in places (something which will surely come to the fore as the series, and Richard, find their feet), and can hold the interest of those who just love to see others suffer.

Having said all that, Total Wipeout makes no pretensions about being anything other than an imported all-American no-brainer – something some views may find unappealing. Richard keeps the momentum going but ultimately fails to recapture the feather-weight banter of the U.S. series – a problem possibly quite easily solved by injecting some much needed rolling laughter – in the same way that Stewart Hall made ‘It’s A Knockout’ so much better.

I actually prefer Richard’s new CBBC show – Richard Hammond’s underground lair. I know it’s meant for five year olds, but its still brilliant. Its on iplayer now, and it features Oliver!

Richard Hammond’s Blast Lab is a new series directed particularly towards children of pre-teen age, and features Hammond and his Botswana side-kick Oliver. The show is also an attempt to bring science together with quizzes, challenges, and gungey fun and games.

This, being the first show in the series, gives us a flavour of the fun on offer; and seems to set Richard up as the next Johnny Ball. The actual ’science’ is underplayed enough to keep kids interested, but lacks 2D graphic illustrations which could push the show along. The action is interesting and fun to watch, although some viewers may wish a fourth round of play was introduced to replace many of the slow action-replays, interviews, and game explanations.

Overall, a very good attempt at children’s entertainment, and one which has the potential to get better and better.

Is it me or does fridge magent fall in love with every Oliver??! Lol. When he said he was good looking and a surfer I was expecting a blonde fit toned guy and he wasnt even that good looking. wonder if hamster could get round the qualifiers
first he will drown in the mud, then drown in the water but he would be good at bouncing on the big red balls. would love to see a comic relief version top gear does total wipeout. in fourth place and in hospital jezza, third place may, second hamster and in first the mighty stig.

Second Episode: Richard seems to have lost some of his enthusiasm for the show. Pitty. I bet the producers said “and no raucous laugher and no fooling about – this is a professional TV show on the BBC!”. That never seemed to stop Murray Walker, Stewart Hall, or that guy from the Horse Racing… Surely in this show, of all shows, we need raucous laughter and fooling about.

    Ent’usiasms, Ent’usiasms.

So bad that it is actually very entertaining. It would be axed if it wasn’t for Hammond.

I didn’t see this weeks. Was it as awful as last weeks?

I hope RH is getting a lot of money for that. The BBC should really be ashamed of itself. Talk about dumbing down.

They’d be as well putting The Dukes of Hazzard back on for Saturday evenings since that doesn’t insult the nation’s intelligence as much as The Wall or Total Wipeout.

The US version WipeOut has much funnier commentary as well as more inventive additions to things such as the spinner etc. Check it out on youtube. UK version has potential but need to add more humourous comments.

Nothing makes being funny harder than the pressure to be funny. To be honest, it would be easy to send this kind of entertainment up – and the only person that could really get away with it (that I can think of) would in fact be RH.

out of the two shows i at a rie old age of 29(for one month onlyleft) iprefer the kids programme alot more entertaining watching kids getting disappointed and making them blow up “what they would of won!” however i do get a slight kick out of people getting boxed in the face and bouncing off big red balls.
must admit if it wasnt Richard presenting though wouldnt be a viewer so the BBC arnt that dumb! Id watch if too be honest it was just a static picture of him(yes very sad I know!)
but the kids prog is like brainiac for kids and just as witty as he was on that!!

I agree that is soo hilarious when ppl fall off very high things in a variety of different ways, Ive watched epsidode 8 ever day after school for 6 days exact. its a er bit more than new years resolution. And 2 tyhe person called Carry i say kinda spose at least u have better taste than those ppl who worship that guy, er Zac Efron/conformist/jock or watever. he looks like something youd find lurking on the bottom of a pond.
