Whatever the result Clarkson should have utilised an A4 as in the old days. A1’s were second link after ’streaks’ which hold the world steam record (Mallard). Hey ho no matter Clarkson should win by a mile. Strangely enough I sit at my office desk with an O gauge model of Silver Fox and also my neighbour when I was a kid had a Vincent HRD…………..

Jezza wasn’t in the train, he was on the footplate of the engine. The train is the coaches it pulls behind it.
The engine is 60163 Tornado. An A1 Peppercorn Pacific.

The Bike was knackered, and needed major fixing, they didnt leave Kings Cross till gone 8am… and then the camera man got it wrong, they came back and left a third time.

The steam engine would win easily if it didnt have to stop for water. In the old days it would have pickedup water on the move from troughs between the rails but these have been long-since removed. Now it has to take on water from a road tanker which will take at least 20 mins to do and will need to be done at least twice I should think. Also, the rail authorities will only allow steam locos to do a max of 75mph even though Tornado would comfortably hit the ton. I reckon it will be very close.

If Jeremy actually drove that train he’d get it off the tracks he’d go so fast… if James drove a train he’d go off the tracks getting lost… if Richard drove the train he’d want to go in something else, like oliver or a bike.
On that bombshell, I love top gear…

i think hammond will be on the bike (I bet it’s an old ural bike) and james on either a jag or an austin maxi (no, not really).

I do wish top gear was on every single week of the year……. I just can’t wait for the next series, it’s such a joy watching them falling over or setting hard tasks on 1500 pound cars.

yes was a brilliant day filming, very good twist and a brill start to the series..

the loco had 7 hd cameras fitted to it, incl one on the buffers, and 2-3 hand-helds, the whole trip was filmed from the air too by a chopper g-pixx which was whirling around along side us the whole way!
its gonna be an amazing show…

This episode was amazing, three fantastic machines, all Icons of their time… all British.. another brilliant episode of Top Gear with a spectacular stig moment!!

cool race but poor jezza

Did anyone notice that Jezza used at least 3 different mobiles during the race? (White iPhone, N95 8GB and some candy bar style phone). I thoroughly enjoyed the race, but its still nagging me that he used them. Stig moment was utter class, I never realised Herr Schumacher had a gr8 sense of humour. The boys are back

Great show to start your new series.

I was a bit worried though about Richard driving the motorbike without his lights on. The weather was not good and he was dressed in black, and the bike was black too – surely he should have had his lights on.

Then back in the studio the bike had it’s lights on. That does no good for your safety waiting to be inside a building before putting the lights on !

PS – I tried to register for your website with my Dutch e-mail address, but I never got a reply from you. Do you not accept overseas e-mail addresses? In the end I had to use my hotmail account – that worked fine. I live in Holland (originally from Scotland).

what an awesome first show

Excellent first program but there was a big mistake with the race. At the start they say they’re going up to great north road as motorways weren’t built, so why are they then filmed on the A1M through various parts of the country??? Surely they should have taken the old great north road through it’s towns and villages. Jag was beautifull, bike was sublime, but for a steam engine to only just lose to a car which did go by motorway and dual carriage way (which also weren’t built in 1949), was phenominal. Think Clarkson should have a moral victory on that one.

What was the name of the piano score playing in the background when James is saying ‘Both the train and the car had to do another stop and from here on the big chance ( ?!?! ) of the A1 were single carriageway…so I wasn’t popping the cork just yet!’.

This is exactly after Jeremy orders the train men to ‘make millions of coal’

Please if someone can tell me the name of that song I will really appreciate it.
