The May on Sunday

The Mole’s not exactly your typical Mail on Sunday reader, but with a tip off that James had given them an interview we thought we’d give it a look.

Our Captain Slow talked about all the big issues of the moment: his haircut, the new telly series and, inevitably, the Stig.

‘When I joined Top Gear, I never imagined in a million years that it would turn into the phenomenon that it has,’ he said.

‘If I had, I would have thought twice about it, to be honest. I find being famous slightly embarrassing.’

James then went on to talk about the special affection he gets from certain female fans:

‘A couple have come to the pub to find me. I’ve had things left for me – fruitcakes, bags of sweets, spam, a smoked haddock… I want these ladies to know that I’ve eaten every single one. It never occurred to me that they might be poisoned.’

There’s also a bit early in the piece about a 70ft jump in the passenger seat of a Subaru, shot in Los Angeles for the new series – we’ll tell you more about that shoot tomorrow.
