Show three: it’s no set up

Posted by The Mole at 7:55 pm on Sunday July 5, 2009

Small cars in WestminsterSince a certain oh-no-the-caravan’s-on-fire moment a few series ago, some black-hearted and cynical commentators have suggested that everything on Top Gear is in some way contrived and fake.

Show them, for example, tonight’s assault on the Government in three horrible small cars and they might sneer and snipe and suggest that it was all a big set-up.

But you know what, it wasn’t.

The Mole was there for the filming and witnessed Jeremy, Richard and
James applying their provocative – if actually slightly rubbish –
slogans to the side of their cars in a grimy and well hidden side street just over the other side of Westminster Bridge.

Then there was
a lot of pacing around and urgent hissing into walkie talkies as the camera crews got into place near the Palace of Westminster itself and the lookout in Parliament Square reported that the coast was clear.

The whole thing was actually pretty hairy, especially when the police chief in charge of that area stopped the whole convoy and politely but firmly told our boys to get lost.

One of his objections was that we were undermining a legitimate Tamil protest that was happening in
the square at the same time, a point that was slightly lost when Jeremy then got talking to the Tamil leader who proudly announced that his entire crew of demonstrators were massive Top Gear fans.

So, the small cars test got the Tamil vote (sort of), but what did
you reckon to it and indeed the rest of tonight’s show? We do read your comments you know.

Except James. After his Ken Block experience, he doesn’t want anything more to do with Things From The Internet.

OK episode – but what annoyed me most was bloody Freeview first advertising the start time as 8.30. I tune in then, only to find that I’ve missed half of it.

That and the fact that I absolubely hate Michael McIntyre makes this episode a bit of a damp squib for me – sorry.

I’m not really sure what to think. Don’t worry it was great but the first week was all drama, the second week all mucking about and this week doesn’t fall into any of those categories. It was so different from the previous two shows and indeed all other episodes it threw me a bit. But for me it’s like anything new, the first time your not quite sure but you’ve got to try it again for you to properly understand it and 100% enjoy it. So I’m off to BBCiplayer.

Up there with the Porsche/Aston/M6 Man-Fight, the 3 Mums testing the small cars from a few years back, the 10k supercar challenge, £1,500 Coupe challenge..

Brilliant – accessible, realistic.. even the £250k SL Black – filmed in england – Way more accessible than a Lambo in the middle east.

    Cool!

I thought the show was pretty good.
Michael Macintyre was a fantastic guest and I loved the rally part with James. The switch between slow-mo and real-time in that was genius. I admire the work you do in filming that, outstanding.

The small car challenge was funny but didn’t strike me as being quite as ridiculously (and rightly so …) ambitious as usual.

How many people are now going to accidentally kill themselves in pursuit of achieving the best score in car sauna?! That was a genius idea, and the best bit of this week’s show.

I thought the small cars feature was a bit disjointed, though it did remind me how much I want a Fiat 500.

not the best if im honest….

the episode didnt have the structure of the last two, this weeks one felt like you’s didnt know what to do with this weeks episode. the first part of the challenge was more like a political show rather than an entertainment show…. the jokes on the bankers were good like but it didnt last as long as the others which gave me the impression it was half arsed and yet it took up time of the show which meant the last part of the challenge comes across half arsed as well (with the guys making up their own challenges and the set up fiat 500 ending)

decent show but not as good as the previous 2 (a very high standard to follow I’ll admit), maybe on a par with the average episode of 5th gear. There were a few decent laughts though and the guest was great.

as someone else mentioned, the fiat 500 bit seemed faked – all the owers put their lights on at once? must be well coordinated, and the end just felt like an advert. the faked stuff needs to be avoidied or really really well faked so the audience cant notice it and it feels natural with the show.

    Great show.

I was a little concerned that Michael McThinky would spoil it for me (funny guy, I just can’t stand him), but then two aspects improved things for me (i) I left the room to dish up dinner during the interview bit (ii) seeing him nearly roll the reasonably priced car. If you could just edit it a little so it looks like he does roll it and perhaps then catches fire, I think the show would have been perfect.

Michael McIntyre was hilarious, the small cars bit was okay, and the Ken Block bit was brilliant – amazing filmwork! One thing that didn’t work was acting daft with small cars – that didn’t work as well as it normally does with clapped-out old things. The mojo is strong in this one..

Seriously, that was a corker. I was in stitches at the cheap car features and thought the Ken Block film was one of the best looking so far – would love to see it in HD. The SL Black piece was good but I think I’ve managed to switch off when it comes to fast Mercs after they spent so long dishing up the same old stuff in increasingly unusable forms.

I think it’s the mark of a great show when you lose yourself in it and can’t remember how long you’ve been watching it for because the good stuff just keeps coming.

Michael Macintyre was sooo funny! I bet I’ll end up as an overtake-o-phile in my clapped out Mini.

The Mercedez-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series [if in doubt, add more suffixes] was an interesting piece, but the Ken Block bit wasn’t as special as I had imagined – it wasn’t a proper video like the Gymkhana “FaceTube” hits, more an introduction to Ken Block for those who don’t “own an internet”, to put it in Jamesian – but the small cars videos were better than I expected, so it averages out as epic win!!

The usual TopGear fare, then. Great!

Brilliant show this week, personally I feel better than last week.

The news kept me laughing, especially at the gifts for women (typical coming from 3 blokes of course). I guessed that James won the car sauna (being someone who doesn’t tolerate cold too well).

The Ken Block piece was brilliant, breathtaking and scary to watch. Congratulation boys on finally finding a Cool Ken :D . So he definitely needs to go on the test track.

I loved the ranting protest in London. The police sometimes are so miserable.

I can’t wait until next week’s episode and the letter race. Keep up the good work guys.

Now I’ve finally watched it after the timing cock-up (woo – iplayer!) must say it was pretty good.

    BUT…

as someone pointed out above the show is getting very ‘lowest common denominator’. This episode wasn’t too bad, but on average each season seems to appeal more to the guys who write IN CAPITALS wth bad speling than to the people you were making the show for originally.

I can see it all going a bit ‘Simpsons’- i.e. the crap shows start outnumbering the good ones- if you keep going. This week’s show by the way, was a good(ish) one, but the overall trend is worsening.

You guys are intelligent journalists, please regard your audience as equals. You might lose a few thousand viewers if you quit the crap, but they’ve always got Virgin1 to watch.

I laugh at the people who say the fiat 500 bit was faked… hmmm, Duh! rings a bell. It was suppose to be showing that a good number of the NEW small cars on the road are fiat 500’s and which hides the fact that they didnt really need to do a small car test, as anyone who does want a small car are pretty good choosing their small cars without topgears help, also as a note to that visual link to what they wanted to say which was they forgot to consider the obvious or that they cus they’d already tested it they didnt need to cover it again. Which is a roomy 5 seater, which is well priced, quite good mpg, and look fantastic too. I can’t believe I just had to explain that to some obviously avid Top Gear viewers. Who care’s what set up… as long as its entertaining, at least the 500 thing was blatently set up, rather than a not so obvious one of them turning the corner to find just ONE of their cars they were driving, that they had set up, but then again none of us wouldn’t have noticed if they did.

Mcintyre-although i dont usually find him that funny, he was good tonight. probably because i have an old mini and had could relate to his joke about wanting to overtake people in faster cars.

the episode was absolutely fantastic, the Ken Block video was incredible, and protesting outside parliament was probably the most entertaining film of the current series.

my favourite moment though was when the Saint Bernard got taken out of the IQ, Jeremy then says if you want to complain about it being sad write to “James May is a B*stard” XD

And i disagree with Ape F, i can safely say im an anorak when it comes to motoring and i think TG is still in its prime. you’ve balanced motoring advice and entertainment well. i mean, this week you tested SIX small cars!

Also, Clarkson isn’t talking truth when he says Citroens are flimsy or plasticy. The current C3 is, but C4 C5 and C6 have a great quality feel. And the interior of this new C3 looks like it came from Fiat 500 which is a huge step forward

Overall- loved it, best one so far just because it brought the guys closer to the viewer (unlike hypercars that make them look posh and unfriendly). I love hypercars but they should be exclusive and special. Dont throw them at the viewer every five minutes and expect them to be amazed. One SUPERCAR PER SHOW IS ENOUGH. I would also like to see the cool wall back, and more hot cars on the track. Still the show is brilliant. Good job guys

I agree wholeheartedly with Klaus up there at #40—this felt like vintage Top Gear to me. Not the outsized cartoon that it has become since Series 8, but what real, proper TG used to feel like, circa series 4 through 7. It didn’t have the big, elephantine films that consume a whole episode, but seemed more like a series of short, smart bits that on the whole add up to a very satisfying episode.

I thought that you were 1 for 2 so far coming into tonight (the first episode of the series was patchy but carried by the brilliant race, whereas episode 2 had Richard’s brilliant Abu Dhabi films but was otherwise a complete and utter waste of time), and figured that this series would turn out something like series 11: some genuine high points, but not a great deal of replay value for anoraks like myself who play repeats of episodes the way some play albums constantly as background music. From the comments here, I can see that most of the genuine car enthusiasts have been driven away by all of the contrived dicking about, leaving only the people who want to see you falling over, breaking things and creating a public nuisance of yourselves. As one of the remaining diehards, I would like to thank you for tonight’s episode, since it was one of the now few and far between eps that seemed to actually give a damn about cars.

It wasn’t a huge three ring circus, show-your-non-enthusiast mates kind of episode, but for the faithful, it was a welcome return to the kind of well-balanced show that put you on the map, week in, week out. The three of you are funny enough as it is, lads; you don’t need to turn TG into a laboured comedy variety hour every goddamned week. And while my opinion (sadly…) seems to be a minority one, I would like to thank you for throwing the long time fans the odd bone or two, in the form of episodes that remind us of why we started watching you in the first place.

It’s been a long time since I really felt the episode was really good. Episode 3 somehow brings back the good feeling.

Though I think it is more of a beginning point, hopefully.

I love the protests, and I love the mucking of the bankers. Putting Top Gear’s new found institutional fame to good use that people don’t find it too offensive yet allow themselves to be mocked at.

I think episode long featured films should be kept to a minimum. I mean the last really good one was the Botswana one, mainly because it was just totally right up there exotic.

Things started to go awry with the Japan-GTR flick(held together by the GTR actually).

I can’t put my finger as to what has changed for the worse, but perhaps it’s the scripting.

    Too much?

A Proton Savvy is alot cheaper then a Satria and is good to drive.

And so you know, there’s people out side UK, too. people who like top gear very much and would like to watch series 13. and some of them use hessmo.com to watch it. or, well, used, coz hessmo.co is now closed, coz bbc didn’t like it. i download every episode, of course, but i sometimes wanna watch it online, while it’s downloading…but i can’t. because bbc iPlayer doesn’t work outside UK anyway and bbc’s closing every website what worked…

The SL Black’s test was, as usual, very good.

The thing about the little cars was nice, but it could have been better if it was like an usual “challenge” on Top Gear. (No one bumped into James’ car!)

The rally film was great, that was some serious driving there! I’m really looking forward to know his time around the track.

Michael McIntyre was just the best “star in a reasonably priced car” ever!

Overall this was a very nice episode, but it wasn’t the best ever made.

SO funny. James’ face when Ken Block drove the car off that ramp was the funniest thing I’ve seen in ages.

I didn’t think the challenges were as good as usual though.

I hate it when Top Gear is on after sporting events, what’s with changing the listings to say it’s on at 8.30 and putting it on at 8 anyway? I missed the start and it didn’t Skyplus it because the listings still said it hadn’t started yet. Who cares about a few people hitting balls anyway, how hard can it be?

I thought the episode was splendid except for mcintyres highly slappable face, and the overt gratuitous-ness of Ken block. His driving reminded me of a showy offy guitar solo, causing me to arise from my easy chair and shout “get a penis!”

and his stupid little facial hair situation.

And the way he introduced his motorcycle friend like in a cheesy video game. Coming out to play indeed.

Cinematography was spectacular though, especially considering how uncouth a subject. I feel sorry for James not for the intense g forces and crazy stunts, but forhaving to be locked in a car with that Block fellow. The rest of the episode was brilliant, especially the dogs towards the end. Laughed til I cried.

I have to say I was a little disappointed with the Ken Block feature. It was good but, given how many times I’ve seen the boast “Ken Block’s amazing driving and Top Gear amazing editing” I thought both the camerawork and editing was inferior to that of both of the Gymkhana videos.

In addition I think you also made a mistake over using the slow-mo camera and using music. Raw audio (with less commentary from James as well). The whole thing struck me as a poor attempt to copy the “Gymkhana” style rather than being the usual Top Gear quality.

Still, great feature with the small cars and some fantastic comments (I’d expect no less) from Clarkson to the bankers!

The Ken Block film was amazing, I liked the fact that you left the music off until the bike joined in.

Apart from that the small cars in London weren’t that good. The problem is it didn’t really go anywhere…. We all know they are naff already. The second lot of reasonable cars was better.

The problem is that after brilliant small car tests as with the Fiesta last series, it makes it hard to go anywhere new/exciting.

It was the first top gear episode that I’ve actually stopped watching before the end. I just got bored with it, it’s become very formulaic and lost its edge. I’m waiting for the canned laughter as the next nail in the coffin, because the Block piece felt like a drift into US territory.

Top Gear was always fun to watch because it always felt like it didn’t care what people thought and the people involved were having fun. It was also very British, and this series seems to have lost all of that.

-: the formula gets too obvious. Dogs were funny but the protest and dragrace were predictable and didn’t add to the show.
+: JC laughing himself to tears with the guest.
    -: the guest.

Show was ok, liked the bit when they took the mickey out of the bankers and government. But if your going to do “consumer advise” can you do it properly please of just stick to the super car stuff. The second part of the cheap and cheerful cars wasn’t very funny/interesting or useful advise.

I do always enjoy Top Gear and understand that they have a really hard time pleasing the most and had a lower budget for this series because of the current financial climate. I find that Top Gear has set the bar so high with the great episodes that it is hard to emulate and match that. What I want to see is more of the brilliant wit and humour. I don’t want to see Top Gear start to tell rubbish, crude, cheap gags and keep up their witty, clever jokes that made this show so entertaining in the first place.

I can’t see why some people do not like Michael Mcintyre, he is superb and the best comedian out there. If you don’t find him funny, oh well, that’s your opinion I suposse.

So SIARPC was brilliant this week, as was the Ken Block bit had a great slow-motion work of genuis bit.

Good episode, but I praying that, as someone else pointed out, that it doesn’t turn into “the lowest common denominator”. Don’t worry about keeping the type of people who like bland, crude humour watching- they have The Inbetweeners and Russel Brand to cater for that.

By the way, anyone who moans about how Top Gear doesn’t have enough “Consumer Advice” and not enough about cars and their stats, why don’t you subscribe to Top Gear Magazine, that is great for true petrolheads who want more, for want of a better word, ‘hardcore’ car stuff, there is great articles about that in there. And the bit at the back of the magazine will help with consumer advice. So please don’t complain the Top Gear doesn’t feature enough true car stuff, if you want that- go watch Fifth Gear and buy Top Gear magazine because IMHO, Top Gear is an entertainment program which is brilliant at its job- entertaining. So more challenges with the usual hilarious tasks and situations with all the witty banter exchanges between Clarkson, Hammond and May please!!

Don’t fix the recipe when it’s not broken.

every episode doesnt have to involve something blowing up for it to be good! you are like action addicts. good topgear feel is the best! i like things blowing up as much as anyone, but i dont need it every sunday! i think series 13 have beed good and diversed so far! keep it up!

Amazing effects with both the mercedes sl black and with ken block. The dogs part was the highlight, and I nearly wet myself with laughter! Last nights top gear worked the best for me out of the new series.

and michael mcintyre, stephen fry and MICHAEL SCHUMACHER?? who have you got in store next week!!? best stars in a reasonably priced car ever.

There should be a Top Gear Forum on this website I think where we could discuss things like this instead of just leaving comments, there could also be a ‘Suggestions’ and ‘Complaints’ about the actual show section as well as another section where you can discuss cars and stuff like that.

overall a really good show. michael mcintyre was funny, as was the second car test. and i always like to see a car on track with 660bhp. i think the news has been a bit disappointing in the last 3 shows- the banter between hammond, clarkson and may is what sets the show apart, but the news has become too much about that and not enough about new cars, and all the stuff they used to discuss at that point in the show.

series has been brilliant so far, keep it comin!

Myself… you are missing the issue entirely… I have watched TG since Tiff and Quentin were kicking tyres and Jezza was still in long shorts with an untamed afro-like mullet… and I thank god it’s no longer those days!!! I love the entertainment, flare and fun attitude of TG in more recent years, but last night was just bland. It felt like a total mis-hit compared to other episodes. I don’t give a damn if they don’t blow something up.. in fact, I prefer it just to be entertaining and witty, but last night wasn’t. I was just contrived, and painful to watch for it’s very unfunny “funny bits”… apart from McIntyre, who was actually quite funny for a change (he normally just makes me want to strangle him). TG can and does do better than this. You can’t get it right all the time, but last night really does make you wonder as to how long they can keep this up… and for those who have been saying “dis waz da best show eva”… you clearly haven’t been watching for very long…

By no means the best show ever and the weakest of this series so far. The small car tests were poorly done and seemed very cobbled together, the 500s lined up was obvioulsy a fix. Michael McIntyre was ok not as funny as I’ve seen him, missed the SL black test as Sky had it down to start at 8:15pm :( Ken Block easily the stand out part, but not as good as some stuff I’ve seen him do, hope next weeks is better

SL65 Black was awesome, what a noise it makes!

Cheap car test was ‘ok’, and nothing more.

Ken Block feature was excellent, great cinematography – pity it wasn’t a bit longer? Maybe next time!

Michael Macintyre – NEVER AGAIN!!! I prefer comedians who are funny. Not smug, self-satisfied comedians who think they’re funny. I’m sick of the sight of him.

Overall it was an average episode, not a patch on the previous shows from the new series. (maybe my dislike of that ‘comedian’ has tainted my review of the show :)

In the end of the episode Jeremy said that if anyone spotted another car matching theirs then they would be the winner.
Well in the final seconds of that film 58 mins and 16secs to be exact, parked on the oposite side of the road seen between the rear of the white Fiat 500 and front of the yellow Fiat 500 is a red Toyota IQ… I think that this would make James the winner…

MSDosser, you have a very good point. I wasn’t really talking about last nights episode entirely but I was just arguing against what Gavin about what he said about Top Gear needing to be about more cars and that it isn’t really a car review show anymore. My argument is that, no- it isn’t really a car review show anymore. But that era of Top Gear was cancelled because no-one watched it. The reason this new era of ‘3 guys mucking around’ took of is that it is not all about cars and thats what people want. Many people watch Top Gear who hate cars because it is such quality entertainment, which shows that the ‘messing around having a laugh’ recipe is what people want and why Top Gear is successfull. Personally, I love cars and love Top Gear. The TV program doesn’t really satisfy my petrolhead needs which is why I also watch Fifth Gear and subscribe to TG Magazine.

Another good show Top Gear team! And I’m not saying that to be contrived or insincere because I really mean it. The segment you did with Mr Block was absolutely sensational it had me on the edge of my seat with all his insane driving in that kick ass Subaru Impreza causing Mr May to act a bit girly if I’m honest here, (don’t drive too close to those planes! Watch that post there!) He reminds me of my mother when she’s a passanger and my dad is driving, my mother really hates it when my dad drives lol. The SITRPC this week was absolutly hilarious! Mr McIntyre had me in stitches with his jokes and Mr Clarkson as well. I also liked the drive protest you did in Westminster driving those god awful crappy cars, although if next time you find yourself doing those things I would recommened three things 1) come up with better sounding slogans. 2) Don’t for the love of God let Mr Clarkson near the megaphone because you know he’ll come out with the first thing that comes out his gob, and finally 3) Get better cars to cruise in.

Look forward to next weeks show lads, keep up the good work!

Sorry Top gear but this wasn’t a great show. I enjoyed the SL Black review and the camera work was awesome (as always). Listening to Jezza compare the car to the SLR and normal SL was very good, and not boring.

The news was funny and you talked about some cars again :) Also telling the Government to leave us along to live our own lives was spot on ;) The “car sauna game” was a stroke of genius.

The first small car review was okay, and funny as you had another go at our useless Government. “We want AMV8 not G8″ lol

Michael McIntyre was okay as a guest, but he made up for it with his insane Gambon cornering skills. Nice to see a new face behind the wheel. Must be hard for you though to get new people on the show.

The second small car review wasn’t that great tbh. Although seeing James May try to get a fully grown St Bernard into the iQ did tickle me.

As always I look forward to next weeks show.

Sadly there was one thing that did annoy me. The Sky planner indicated that the programme was at 8:30 due to Wimbledon coverage but I turned on at 8:15 and it had actually started at 8 so I missed the SL Black test. It is very annoying when the BBC don’t stick to the start and finish times of programmes I have missed recording the last few minutes of Top Gear before because the Beeb doesn’t have to fit in to advertisers’ demands – sort it out, it wouldn’t happen on a satellite channel.

Best show so far this series but..Don’t get me wrong, Michael McIntyre is a nice guy and was good value on TG last night (for 2 minutes before he became way too irritating) but he is also so overrated as a comedian – he is effectively recycling very old Lee Evans observational/physical comedy with a little Eddie Izzard surrealness thrown in, all delivered in a very posh and camp style. He is the BBC’s family-friendly flavour of the moment. Playing it anodyne and safe. Thank satan for TG! ;) (sorry for going a lil’ off-topic!!)

I absolutely loved this episode, as always!
It was the best episode of the series so far and you guys never fail to make me smile :)
Me and my friends want to play car sauna!
Jeremy shouldn’t have lost! It was so funny though.
Can’t wait for the other ep’s and so sad that there’s only about 7 episodes in the series :(
I’m sure they’ll be amazing though,
thanks for making my sunday nights brill!

I liked that this was a complete contrast to last week’s show. They can’t all be stand-out winners, but I actually like this kind of ‘quieter’ Top Gear once in a while. Bits of it felt more spontaneous and I liked that, and I also liked that with the exception of the Ken Block film (the editing felt very in keeping with the recent gymkhana vid, btw) everything was shot relatively locally. And you can extrapolate some actually useful information from the challenge if you really wanted to. Yep, liked it.

    Ken Block ace!

    Small cars – Boring Zzzzzzz

Michael McIntyre – the first decent guest for ages

Merc Black – pointless and ZZZZzzzzz

    Sauna – moderately funny

OK episode, at least it was not embarrassingly crude this week.

It wasn’t too bad. The ‘cheap cars’ bit was a bit of a mess – the cars they ‘ended up with’ weren’t cheap at all – they cost £9000+. When the presenters’ mums did a similar test a couple of years ago with the Jazz, Modus and 1007, it was properly informative and hilarious at the same time. Lots of people seem to watch Top Gear these days just to have a laugh, and half of them don’t care about the cars. People have been saying “those three cars were rubbish” but they clearly don’t know a thing about the cars. It’s a shame that this ‘don’t care about cars, just want a laugh’ audience has crept in over the last few years. I find Top Gear funny most of the time, but not when it’s overly forced. Like some other people have said, the people who watch Top Gear for the cars are going to be overtaken by those who just want to see the presenters mess around. Don’t get me wrong, I find them hilarious, always have done, but it was better from Series 3-11, with the Winter Olympics, presenters’ mums, amphibious cars, car football, police cars, that sort of thing. There just needs to be more of a balance between cars and fun.

http://bbc.co.uk/i/lnd97/ Top Gear – Series 13 – Episode 3 Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May confront the credit crunch head on as they attempt to find three sensibly priced small cars that won’t make you miserable, a process that involves haranguing bankers, harnessing large dogs, and almost getting arrested.

Plus, James meets American stunt driving legend Ken Block, Jeremy tests the mildly insane Mercedes SL Black on the track, and Michael McIntyre is the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car.

yes i have fallen into the ‘top gear is too scripted’ group, but then again, we have had to endure 5 series of it so far.

and counting..? will have to wait for the rest of the series.

constructive criticism to stop it losing it’s core fanbase.

the ken block film was one of the best things i’ve seen on the programme though. absoballalooteleeloved the slow-mo kickin’ up dust.

annoying when clarkson kept drifting the Black though then saying it wasn’t quite fast enough to overtake (especially when the SLR driver was creaming the lines)

There are two problems with Top Gear ……

    i) It doesnt last long enough
ii) I miss around a third of what is being said because I am laughing SO much.

I loved the car sauna, although the boys could of / should of took their clothes off in order to cool down .

The government abuse was just utterly fantastic and it was side splitingly funny.

I am surprised they didnt get arrested for not filling the right forms with the police for a lawful protest !

But only 5 more to go that is awful , I now understand what it must be like to be a drug addict the withdrawl is just to great.

Top Gear has slowly been turning into an hour on a sunday evening of comedy and laughter as opposed to facts and roadtests with the odd chuckle here and there.

The roles need to be reversed, i.e LESS jokes and MORE facts, as opposed to MORE jokes and LESS facts.

Also i thought this last week as well, i thought it would be funnier if every week following on from the first show, instead of doing a star in the reasonably priced car, each week you could have had a different stig appearing. (just a thought)

I despise all you pseudo critics who complain how Top Gear has not been factual enough and doesn’t give a damn about cars anymore, but is rather focused only on entertainment. Top Gear is in fact an entertainment show about cars! Want factual, boring car reviews? Watch Fifth Gear.

On another note, I too agree with the majority here that believes that Top Gear is much better when the program is filled with short, creative tests and challenges in which the guys do what they do best (“ambitious yet rubbish”) rather than one long film that takes up an entire episode.

    @ 257 Swordsman.

Top gear IS an entertainment show.

    It WAS a car programme.

if yoo want an entertainment show, watch Takeshi’s Castle.

the blatant pursuit of a bigger audience means it is moving away from why people liked it in the first place (decent, thorough tests of good cars) and into a flimsy, disjointed (and effectivey short-term) “entertainment show” where car tests, or what people who Top Gear should be aimed at are tuning in for, appear as an after thought, with a dedicated 5 minutes of an hour long programme.

    Clarkon is a motoring journalist.
    May is a motoring journalist.
    Hammond is…a tv presenter?

    a ‘comedian’ isn’t in there.

what made top gear stand out from it’s rivals was the wit that was interweaved with the driving of cars.

now it seems like top gear believes its own myth, and is revolving the show around the jokes.

    which is sad.

Right , you are basically saying that the show is not what it once was, I would like to see you do any better. You want a regular run of the mill , boring and unfunny car show that has loads of presenters dragged for no-where and slung together on the budget of a carboot stall , watch Fifth Gear. TopGear is for PetrolHeads , who also have lives , have a sense of humour and above all adore cars. Jeremy Clarkson is the best Motoring Journalist in the world. And I would love to be a motoring Journalist. Richard Hammond is a motoring Journalist , and has done other TV shows in the past but when you are in television , you dont just stick with one show. And James May is a motoring Journalist. And it wasnt a set up.

In the future , I wish to go into motoring Journalism, I love TopGear , i love cars and I adore this whole concept of fun, banter, cars and three middle aged men falling over.

And if TopGear is as bad as you claim why do the get such good ratings, and per show get almost 6 million viewers. So go and live your little life and watch your FifthGear which gets approx two viewers per show.

TopGear has been , is ,and always will be, THE GREATEST TELEVISION SHOW………………….IN THE WORLD.

yoo obviously haven’t taken in anything i’ve said, quite clearly.

i do have a sense of humour, although it is fairly immature.

in which case i should be loving this series of top gear. i clearly said that the humour should be made second to the stars of the show; the cars. this does not mean i do not have a sense of humour.

your view of a petrolhead is entirely misguided. You watch top gear and laugh at men falling over whilst talking about women having a “crisis”.

yoo obviously must be a petrolhead.

i do adore cars. my girlfriend will tell you that. they come before her.

i will be the first to say clarkson is a great motoring journalist, but the best? tis your opinion (and i’d like to point out that i have merely been expressing mine), but try reading an edition of evo magazine sometime, and compare his writing with the work of Henry Catchpole or David Vivian, and objectively compare what a true petrolhead would actually want to see put into motion on a tv programme with the metaphor-laden works of clarkson.

his articles, as much as i like reading them, are like the show; 75% of it is about something irrelevant to a car, the rest is a vague mention of a car.

i did not claim top gear is “bad”. i claimed i don’t the new direction it is taking, and deviating from what once made it great. the big audience you refer to account for this. good for the BBC, not good for me, and as this post is asking for my opinion, i do not think i am wrong to state it.

as for me being an avid fifth gear fan, im just watching one now. Fortunately mum will be wanting her coronation street back on in a sec…

anyway, i too want to be a motoring journalist, i just need to get off my behind and ask round for work experience to start, my brother already is one and its a world which i would love to be involved in.

if i didn’t love cars, i wouldn’t want to be.

if i didn’t love cars, i wouldn’t feel a bit peeved at what top gear has evolved in to.

I agree completely with Podge 90 – the cars were the priority in the earlier series’, now it seems that the laughs are the priority. I want cars, I want comedy, but there needs to be a good balance. The earlier series, probably from around 2003 to 2007, have been the best. Yes, it’s still entertaining but there’s not much to do with cars we’re all going to buy. And for those saying “go and watch Fifth Gear”, then they clearly haven’t seen Fifth Gear lately. It often tries to mimic Top Gear – and not very well. Perhaps the BBC should keep Top Gear as it is, and launch another, more low-key car show like old Top Gear to be shown of a weekday evening, like ITV’s Pulling Power or something. Even though that never seems to be on. Ahh well, still looking forward to next week’s TG!

Podge @288 – indeed, the very same Richard Porter (of Sniff Petrol, as you say). Very witty, funny man (I definitely sensed his input in the Evora review the other week). I am an avid Sniffer, and I’m hooked on Gareth Jones on Speed, too – it’s well worth a listen, especially if you like motorsport.

missed the first part owing to Tennis, so really didn’t get into it much. Like the Adults say TG is better when the banter between the boys isn’t forced or scripted, don’t like the set ups this time either,if moneys short then save what you’ve got instead of wasting it on a street of Fiat 500’s,once you’ve seen 1 etc.

James & Richard your hair do’s are ok,

The dog thing was good but miss TG,although she dosn’t like cars, maybe see her once in a while??.

Looking forward to the rest of the season and of course MPH.

May be the boys being away so much is compromising TG, I hope not.

I felt the small car bits where blatant product placement for the fiat 500, with the ken block bit being a good plug too – the guy being a DC man, and with his commercial videos all over TG site :-( Not to mention i have to agree the ghymkana practice 2 was at least as good, if not better, than the film you guys did. So the whole episode was james bond driving a mondeo with his sony-ericsson in hand for me – no new info, no addition to the story, just PR.

Oh btw. James ownes a fiat panda, which is just as good as a 500 only cheaper. Come on, don’t tell me anyone beleives he drives up to the shoot in a Panda, and then doesn’t recomend it….?

Of course if you make up the money this way, to shoot bits like the train-car-bike in the first episode, i have no complains :-D

Enjoyed the review of the SL Black — classic Top Gear at its finest (i.e. in depth, no holds-barred reporting on a car with some humor). Michael Macintyre was a great guest, made SIARPC pass by quickly. Ken Block…that video clip of his rally driving was EPIC! Three worst and three best small car clips were ok. I liked the bit where you all placed the dogs inside the small cars. Quite hilarious, and you probably offended PETA as well ;) but no matter.

As always, based on the teasers at the end, I look forward to next week’s show! :)

Wasn’t great. If I had to really fish for complaints it would be James coming off as fake in a couple of spots and saying stuff he wouldn’t usually say.

And the whole episode was rather weak. Though even weak Top Gear is fun.

Michael was hysterical. First Top Gear guest to ever have me in tears I was laughing so hard. Was hoping he’d retell the story he did on “Would I Lie To You?” about the fact for a couple of weeks he could only turn right in his car.

Oh yes, and Richard essentially bankers to kill themselves = epic win!

SL Black was a great looking clip review as usual but we’ve certainly seen Clarkson going sideways in a supercar on an airfield before. So, not terribly exciting.
Ken Block was pretty much Gymkhana Three ft. James May in a non-speaking role. It looked stunning, but not that much better than Block’s own stuff, and I think TG should try to go beyond something that proudly calls itself an infomercial. Like some snrky commentary, maybe.
And the cheap car challenges… Neither informative (cars everyone hates anyway suck, wow) nor really all that funny. And the punchline was really lame.

it was alright, not the best or the funniest but still pretty good.

About Michael McIntyre; come one, how many of us have done the “I’m having him”,the overtaking-a-Porsche-in-t he-fast-lane-with-unbalan ced-wheels-and-bits-falli ng-off-with-your-Kamikaze -bandana-on-shouting-”tor a-tora-tora”-and-the-miss us-screaming-at-you thing?

I know I have, especially in a Skoda Estelle I once owned, for the extra piss-off-the-other-driver points it scores. Mine was an Estelle 130LSE, so it was the ’sport’ version, that could do 70+ without being driven off a cliff.

Its a shame I missed the SL Black test as I thought the programme started at half 8, I was very much looking forward to it which really annoyed me! I started watching it at the part the guest was on which was quite funny at first but got a bit over the top and I just wanted to see more cars and action. I thought the best part was with James and Block in that rally car, the small car test was ok but not one of the best tests ive seen in a while. On overall It wasn’t bad but I hope the next episodes are going to be much better.

It was good, but it was just a bit to much f**king about, which I like, but it was a bit ott this weeks, I want better challenges, and interesting cars. The small car test were crap, and I was actually annoyed when they had the small car drag race, they took the “5mins”, “next day” thing a bit far, but Michael was good, and the Mercedes test was alright. To sum up, I wouldnt watch the repeat on Dave.

Two thumbs up for camera work & editing ;) Small Cars bits were very enjoyable although they were quite disconnected. Really like the dogs test at the end. Saint Bernard in iQ with James… oh, how much I laughed and laughed…

Another thing. I hugely enjoy this episode’s News section. I felt the news in the first two shows were a bit “rough”. I was (and still am) always looking forward to the News – and this one is definitely great.

Just glad you didn’t combine “car sauna” with “big dogs”. That would have made you as popular as a Northamptonshire police-dog handler.

Michael MacIntyre was hilarious. He’s tigger in human form.

What is so wrong with giving your girlfriend a power drill as a present? Perhaps she likes to do-it-herself.

My fiance once brought me a dustpan, brush and broom combo for my birthday. I made the mistake of suggesting I would prefer something more personal. So that Christmas he brought me a box of tampons, saying “you can’t get more personal than that”.

But for crying out loud don’t scipt stuff so much(or don’t take the scipts too far). Like in the Vietnam episode…where Richard stood up with the ship, right under a ceiling fan and bang. Comee oooooonnn.

Therefore James’ IQ does look like my Indesit washer!

I am a huge fan of top gear, but this one was really disappointing. The show had no flow to it and felt very disjointed.

So much more could have been made of the small car test. Something like the isle of man Porsche/Aston/M6 test. There was too much pointless pissing about this episode.

Possibly one of worst shows I’ve ever seen. Sorry lads, but it was.

It felt like the left overs from the cutting room floor all stuck together. There was none of the usual flow from one item to another; the small car tests seemed desperate and pointless; the Ken Block experience was nothing more than an artistic experiment for a new cameraman – you could have at least dubbed some worth while commentary on during editing; and, no offense, but Michael McIntyre?? Seriously? I assume you couldn’t get any D list or above celebrities this time…

The only saving grace was the 5 minutes of laughter with the car sauna, but that really was it this week.

Here’s to hoping that episode four gets back on track.

Last week someone said that SIARPC should be dropped, I think Michael McIntyre proved that it shouldnt.

I think show 2 has been the best so far, this one was a little stop start at times.

But the filming as always thou was top notch, especially Ken Block part. Imagine what hd would look like.

    Cant wait for Sunday

Although I realise times are hard and the credit crunch may have hurt the show’s budget, but surely they can still do cheap car challenges? At least they are amusing! Last weeks show was possibly the most boring one for several series’ and I just cannot understand how, from a brilliant series last year, we can go to this rubbish. It just wasn’t Top Gear. The Lamborghini bit was good, but the challenge, well, it was downright tedious. Nothing went wrong, nothing really funny happened, there were no ridiculous yet amusing challenges and overall, it just wasn’t funny. At all. Sort it out. Please.

Funny that anyone who thinks the show was not that good is living a lesser life and is told to watch 5th gear instead… Is Top Gear a protected species?

The show is becoming more and more popular the stupider it gets, what does it tell?

Just imagine if they’d given James May some special pace notes, so he could have said things like “50 – 6 left – watch out DC-2, 30 – hazard – Cessna on left” etc. Instead we got just another Ken Block video, only it was not as good as the youtube gymkhana ones…

PS I am interested in cars, and I don’t find it funny that LP (longitudinale posteriore) is called just “something”, when it represents one of the most important technological solutions for supercars.

Problem. You guys aren’t going on a trip, and doing something yourselves.

We love it when you guys make a hash of things.

Secretly thats exactly what we crave about but never have the guts or the pocket to actually do it by our selves.

What an IT guys should drive
    What a Cook should drive.
If you are hit by recession what should you drive.
If your neighbours dont like you what should you drive.

I guess you got the point

Best show of the series so far, good balance and variety. I found episode 2 a little deceiving and “set-up”, but episode 3 was fantastic. I am glad the news segment was a little longer this time, I always find the news to be the funniest and greatest part of the show.

Jeremy only said the downsides of the Myvi. The Myvi is pretty spasious and he did not talk about it.And he said the ride was rubbish. It has to be hard to minimise body roll! The supercars ride is simply harder than the Myvi.

I liked this episode much better than last week’s, though The News once again felt very staged indeed.

But, talking of redeeming features, who filmed the Ken Block bit and the Mercedes SL Black review? I have to say, I know a fair bit about cinematography (as in cinema, not TV), but this was just ASTONISHING!
Seriously, if some feature film directors/DPs were as careful and creative as those behind TG’s lenses, the cinema would be a nicer place. I had to watch the end of the SL review time and again because of that absolutely stunning light effect, coupled with the brilliant use of the Justice song… gobsmackingly good, chaps!
Big, huge, gigantic congratulations to all involved – that was absolutely magnificent!

“2,4,6,8 Jacqui Smith’s husband likes to master… Oh I can’t do that one”

Havn’t laughed that much for a while. Fantastic show, I usually don’t like the SIARPC bit, but Michael McIntyre was VERY funny – and I don’t usually like him.

Car sauna was inventive, I like short pieces like that, more of that please.

Getting a Saint Bernhard in the back of a Toyota IQ, comedy at its best.

Only spoilt by Sky missing the first 15 mins, Thanks sky. If it’s not snooker thant ruins Top Gear, its Wimbledon! Thank got for BBC iPlayer.

Top Gear, please oh please never end. I’d have to watch Fifth Gear then and i’d rather get Ebola in my helmet.

The BEST thing about TopGear is that they make roadtests and the like interesting and funny, if someone else had have tested 3 cheap cars it would have been very very boring, end of.

All you need to know is that, that episode was brilliant. Especially the Ken Block part.

P.S. I replied to the confirmation email from th Applause Store to gt tickets to see the first show within 5 minutes of he email arriving. Somehow I didn’t get a call to come. I think you need to sort out this ticket businss and stop them giving them to friends!

Why Ken Block?? I was a little disapointed by his segment as he didnt show anything special – anyone can drive a known route around obsticals so it wasnt really a WOW factor.

The rest of the show was a brilliant mix of entertainment and tomfoolery.

As for the idiots that tuned in at 8:30 – when has TG ever not been on at 8?? iplayer was made for you.

Michael McIntyre was the best part of the show I never knew he was so funny!

Looking forward to a much better show four

Ok so i liked the small car bit but it cant just be me that thinks the start of the bit with ken block looks fake. its only in some of it but the planes im pretty sure are fake. if you didnt catch what i mean look at it on bbc i player. I just think Ken is such a great rally driver he deserves better than dodgey backgrounds around his driving. However the bit where he drifts through the hanger is excellent. The boys as usual brilliant.

I’m sure that if the driver is short enough driving the Toyota iQ someone would be able to sit at the back. I’m under 5 foot and there’s quite a lot of leg room for the person behind.
