Ken Block revisited

Posted by Paul Regan at 8:40 pm on Sunday July 5, 2009

Not sure there’s anyone left on the internet that hasn’t seen the inspiration for James’s Ken Block film on this week’s show, but in case that person is you:

And here’s a bunch of other stuff he’s been up to:

Watching these again I have to say I was a little disappointed with the TG Ken Block feature. It was good but, given how many times I’ve seen the boast “Ken Block’s amazing driving and Top Gear amazing editing” on this site, I thought both the camerawork and editing was inferior to that of both of the Gymkhana videos.

I think the addition of music and James May’s commentary ruined the pacing somewhat. Raw audio would have worked better – as it did in the Gymkhana One video. The whole thing struck me as a poor attempt to copy the “Gymkhana” style rather than being the usual Top Gear quality.

    Hi Mikeado,

I reposted these Ken Block vids in case we had any post-show visitors who hadn’t seen them. Regular visitors (like yourself) probably took a look last week, but they’re such a good watch I thought it worth another go.

Unfortunately I have to agree with Steve. It was nothing better than the original internet videos Block has done. Apart from the slow motion jump at the end, the cinematography was about the same.

However, the premise on this website for this feature did make me think that it was going to be the same stuff, just with James May added, so maybe my view isn’t objective.

I thought the video was great, however I think it would’ve been even better if they sent over the Hamster or Jeremy instead of Captain Slow. James is too reserved to be doing a segment on a wild driver like Ken Block.

You know how hard it is to time a Subaru STI jump with a BMX bike jump and a C-130 FLYOVER AT THE SAME TIME FOR A SHOT?

If I worked at TG I’d bannhammer some of these comments. :D I’d glady take a job at TG btw.

You’re dead right James (comment 23); there can be no doubt that some of the shots are fantastic.

However given that the Gymkhana videos (particularly the first one) were pure driving videos, it seemed a little odd to mix audio clips and music into the TG version. The little in car conversations were well placed, but hearing a “bloody hell” mid-drift spoilt the pacing (in my opinion anyway).

Still, to each their own. Hopefully we’ll get a raw audio version as a bonus on the next Top Gear DVD!

Sorry to double post but Paul Regan, I assume its you whose altered the thread to show addition videos?

You might want to check your URL’s, as you’ve added videos of Ken Block on snow, Ken Block and Travis Pastrana doing jumps and an onboard F1 video from 1967.

One of three is the odd one out, I’ll leave you to figure it out and remove it accordingly…

Dissapointed with TG on Ken Block, but just a bit. Reason is that on the TG feature, the car was a WRC spec with only 300bhp when the Gymhana videos were made with 500bhp+ subys

Had to be a mistake on the bhp – the TG feature subie looked exactly like the DC-sponsored one in the “Infomercial”, sounded like it too. C’mon May, you knew that STI wasn’t stock – lol.

Sorry Bpanama. 2 separate subies. the Gymhana one has 2 exhaust pipes, different rims, much harder suspension from just a first look. And the TG subie is clearly underpowered compared with the Gymhana subie.

Nheo: to be fair they couldn’t have run the Gymkhana car on that course; remember that car was set up for tarmac and not for any sort of off-roading.

The car in the TG clip still had over 300BHP; thats not exactly to be sniffed at… (at it was still more than enough power to get the car massively sideways!)

You realize that 300BHP is in a subie that weighs less then your mom. So its going to be damn fast…The subie not your mom.

You’re right Nheo – I can’t remember where I saw that single centered exhause before (thought it was on the video) – either way, with that exhause note, it’s gotta be pumping more than 330… 305 is stock and he has to be pushing more than 25 with the exhaust alone.
