Show four: the facts…

Posted by The Mole at 8:08 pm on Sunday July 12, 2009

Usain Bolt on Top GearSo that’s show 4 done with then. Did you like it? Would you like it more if we told you one extra fact about each thing in it? No? Oh please yourselves, they’re coming anyway.

The man who told off Jeremy and Richard in the Focus RS v Megane R26.R film is Phil Churchward, our series director. Otherwise known as Mr Vicki Butler-Henderson. Although probably best if you don’t call him that to his face.

Jeremy had several more burning Lamborghini photos for the news, but it went on so long they had to be cut out. Which, if you fancy a Gallardo, is a worry.

As ever with a Top Gear race, the extra shots of the car going by were picked up the next day once the battle with the Royal Mail – which was, as ever, run in real time – had finished.

Usain Bolt really is that cool. Yes, fast, athletic and rippling with laidback confidence. You’d hate him if he wasn’t so charming.

Yes, live ammo. Live.

Onwards and upwards to programme five…

    That’s awesome.

I did thought that the Porsche would beat the 39p stamp. But I was wrong :(

The British Bulldog stint was awesome. Thank heavens the great legend, Clarkson is still alive!

Mr Bolt was awe, and my dad tuned into TG for that bit as he’s from Jamaica and his two nephews were there XD

    Bring on Episode 5!! xoxo :) :P :D ;)

39p race was my favourite part and Usain Bolt is truly awesome. Clarkson’s reasoning of only being 2.5 seconds behind him is laughable.

I thought that British Bulldogs race was a brilliant stroke of genius. That should be a regular feature (in the same way star in a reasonably priced car is). Various cars could be put round that area, with the army after them to see which car can do it the fastest. Perhaps blanks should be used, or maybe one of those ‘laser tag’ things. Saw the Focus RS and Panemara at Goodwood FoS, by the way. It’s a good looking Porsche, I think.

Found the bit about ford and renault to be good and hilarious at the end with JC & RH acting like little kids staying out to play too long. The porsche race i must agree with The Truth that it seemed to be filled with too much motorway shots and maybe then should have included more on the country roads in Scotland. The Evo Vs Army was good but lacked the intensity of other similar challenges like the Range Rover Sport Vs the Challenger Tank.

Have to agree with James, it was SHOCKINGLY awful. Seems to have been thrown together at about 7:30 to be aired at 8. Hammond wont be able to watch himself squeeking over the Zonda, give James May the main slot and give Clarkson a few weeks off to get his act together.

One point that shone through, as James May put it, it wasnt the cars fault the prat who owned it was a drug dealing scumbag. I knew it was going to get smashed to bits as soon as the film started. Shame.

unfortunately i have to say that the episode was not too good. they showed the race for a very short time and it wasnt put together properly. also, it would have been better if only clarkson would have driven the panamera as his comments are much more lively to listen to rather than richard and james’s. they seemed to be trying too hard to be funny i guess, but thats just my opinion. richard and james should have stuck to doing what they do best in these types of races – help the royal mail in delivering the letter for instance.

An interesting race, a great hot hatch battle (when is a hot hatch battle not great?), a fantastic guest and a truly brilliant finale.

But how come you only used the Panamera S? Surely the 500bhp, AWD Panamera Turbo would’ve made a difference, at least near the end?

So sad to see that Evo VII die – with all that Evo IX aero paraphinalia at the back, 500bhp and rally tyres, that was a serious tuner, not just the usual put-a-tin-of-beans-over-t he-exhaust-&-fit-some-shi ny-wheels-to-it that one normally endures the sight of.

    Comment 69 brings up a worrying point – this show feels as though it’s on it’s last legs. Nearing the final series. I’m not sure what can be done about it either;

If it went back to being a proper car show (because lets face it, it’s not anymore) , then much less people would watch it and the show would eventually die.

If in the other hand TopGear continues to entertain people who don’t care about cars that much by driving cheap shit into stuff or whatever, then the ideas tank will soon run dry, no one will watch it, and the show will die.

At the moment, as Andy Wilman even said in his blog at the start of the series, you guys are just doing the same old stuff because you don’t know what else to do, and as a long-term TopGear watcher, that concerns me somewhat.

The comments on these pages are becoming increasingly negative don’t yoo think?

Panamera film was dull and didn’t carry the same enthusiasm as other ‘races’ (612, SLR etc). I was learning more about the Royal Mail than a new potentially ground-breaking porsche.

The Evo vs Army felt a little pointless; i didn’t know whether i was meant to be in awe at the car, proud of the army, or giggling at the ridiculousness of it all.

in the end, i wasn’t doing any.

and DEAR LORD, GET CARS LIKE THE RS AND MEGANE ON B-ROADS!!!! that’s where WE want to see them, not a bland, big-straight-long-wide-co rner airfield.

Drifting fwd cars on a smooth airstrip doesn’t show anything about cars honed for performance on spanking a country road.

I want to see these amazing cars on the road, to see what they look like compared to everything else out there.

Road tests, not track tests, please.

Hammond should get a haircut it looks ridiculous. The Porsche film wasn’t long enough so you never got the sense of suspense or even how long it must have taken to drive all that way. I suppose you couldn’t have topped last week’s going-around-parliament-a nd-shouting-2-4-6-8-Jacki e-Smith’s-husband-likes-t o…

Also couldn’t we have seen Clarkson in the car as it was getting picked up and crushed?

firstly to NO. 63 – that piece of classical music was ‘adagio for strings’

more importantly – a brilliant episode guys, altho i would have liked more shots of the panamera being used properly, rather than just cruising along tediously – at least a few seconds of screaming track shots as an intro to the car would have been nice :) but apart from that, an excellent episode!

Yes, we’ve seen better, but never the less not bad. I just want to notice that you should test more cars like these (on the road, cfr nr 89). I missed the Leon Cupra in the test but I think Seat isn’t among the favourites of the TG-team. Why not an issue about great ‘price-quality’-cars of the past years? (I drive a S.L.Cupra4 Tdi and it’s certainly a potential winner). Keep on the good work!

I hate to say this but I like that Panamera. I think its the first Porsche I like. I was expecting to find a smug Clarkson in that Scottish hut with a pint… but hey, another good effort Wilman, Clarky, Hamster and Slow and the production team.

Would’ve liked to have seen Clarkson with the Royal Mail and the letter, interacting with Hamster and Slow on the phone like in previous races, that would have been good but still loved it! And the army missed him with the LIVE ammo…. HOW?? I think it was a great, and it’s beginning to upset me that we are already half way through the season :’(. Hopefully Top Gear will retur later this year though. But imagine the summer hols without Top Gear to look forward to on the weekend… a man can watch re-runs on Dave to only up to a certain pint before he needs new content (and a job).

At first I hated the bulldog bit, but when that twist came in I loved it. Having lived in a drug-riddled area for quite some time its rather nice to not only see a pusher get his comeuppance, but to have it done for public entertainment? Superb boys – if you ever want to do it again get bunch of them and get James to drive a monster truck over them (Bound to be a world record for total number of cars driven over in a row, so see if you can beat it.) I still say the Panamera is fugly, but its not as bad as the Cayenne.

Dont listen to “some guy” tonights show was excellent, a good blend of humour and proper car testing. the Panamera film was a bit short (when the race reached Birmingham 5 mins in i was thinking “eh? that was fast.”) but apart from that, a thoroughly good show.

i wish you would do another epic race though. im sure you can think up a mode of transport somewhere in the world as a challenger to a car! Epic race episodes have always been the best TG episodes for me, because of the great car and scenery shots, the music used, and the suspense, thinking, “who will win?”

Top Gear is in its prime, keep it up :D

Nice to see James getting more of a chance to be a part of the show and airing his views and not being told to shut up by Clarkson.

Just a quick observation that casts doubt as to whether Jeremy was in the Honda at the time the Trojan clawed him…. The claw that appears outside his window was on the wrong side when it shows the Trojan clawing it from a bird’s eye view.
Not that I probably would’ve believed that they would’ve crushed it with him inside it… it pretty much would’ve crushed his head judging by where it clawed his car.

Sorry, but what the hell is going on with Hammond’s barnet!? Really, he needs to buck his ideas up, the fool.

Stunningly well made show, as ever; I loved the army feature, just as I thought it should be. Porsche segment felt *slightly* dull, if there’s any critisism to make.

Bolt looked very fast, I was sure he’d hit top 3!

  139. Sluggysan said...
Monday July 13, 2009 at 3:39 am Link to comment Report comment

Let’s take this segment by segment, using the Lolcat Win/Fail grading system:

Ford Focus RS road test/race vs. Renault: Win. Just for the sight of the director chewing out Hammond and Clarkson. And did that Focus have left-hand drive? Hmm. Can we get that in North America, please?

The News: Marginal win; pretty much the same thing we usually get. Hammond’s been married for too long judging from his reaction to that Zonda.

Royal Mail vs. Porsche: Win. You can’t defeat the wonders of modern post-ism. The mail tracker was a nice Google Maps mashup. Seeing May and Hammond bouncing off each other (and May getting a quick nap) was priceless. Best bit of the episode. Doing the races in the UK can get a bit repetitive, but it costs less.

Usain Bolt: Win. Not the best interview ever, but decent; no awkwardness. His lap was epic, too.

British Bulldog/Evo destruction: Epic FAIL. First of all: that’s bad judisprudence. How much would that Evo have fetched at auction for depleted public coffers? It should be deducted form the judge’s pay packet. Second: we came here for a car show, not a military hardware show. We can get that elsewhere (possibly hosted by the Clarkson, too).

So, it’s overall a Win, although there were some truly crap bits. The season has been rather uneven: epi 1 was Epic Win with the big train race (and Clarkson having his hinder kicked as the stoker), 2 and 3 were kinda ehh, and 4 is a mixed bag. Hoping 5-8 get us back to the “wow” factor that puts TG ahead of, say, Fifth Gear. ;) Getting out of the UK would be a start.

BTW: I’d love to see a Top Gear/[Total] Wipeout crossover. Wouldn’t you like to see Clarkson humbled by the Big Balls? I know I would.

I love Top Gear. Last weeks episode was a bit dull but its still better then anything else id rather watch on TV. Todays episode was awesome, the mail race, focus and even the interview. But that last segment although cool was such a obvious army showboat film, show off all the big fancy machines and hope to recruit a couple more. I didnt mind the ford beach raid, rover vs the tank or any of the others but this one came off really staged and centered on the military tools. And im sorry but i dont buy that live round bs for one second….the shots of the bullets actually hitting the evo looked like cg…lol i know that’s a complete bitter fan geek conspiracy claim but it really did look fake…You could easily stage it and then just shoot at the car in an controlled area just to roll it into the studio and film the proof. Kinda bugs me when TG plays their fans for fools with stuff like that and pretending that clarkson was in the evo when it was picked up. All aside though, job well done… im waiting for that rally challenge!!!

The Focus RS bit was brilliant. The Letter Race was decent, but a bit flat at times. I didn’t really understand or enjoy the last bit. I just seemed to fake, they’re not really after him, it was just to look good for the camera. I totally accept some scripting on topgear, but that race had far too much. Don’t be glum though TG, I still love you as much as ever. :D

I personally think that the parts that were contrived just felt very contrived. There wasn’t much spontaneity. The part with the EVO was just an excuse to show off cool military vehicles. Fair enough, but I would have rather just seen cool military vehicles without Jeremy trying to prop up the segment with some vague mention of a car.

The bit with the Porche just didn’t feel epic at all. The film really did set it up as a foregone conclusion. Maybe the bits of James’ pessimism should have been cut out? I just found myself agreeing with him, and he was clearly right. They should have replaced those bits with more about the car, or was it really that boring? It is German.

An interesting thing about the classical piece playing at the end (“Adagio for Strings” by Samuel Barber) is that it was actually taken from the string quartet that Barber wrote (Opus 11).

Seems this series so far always leaves you waiting for the ‘the big one’ but never delivers.

There’s a slightly depressing feeling that you guys are victims of your own success. Bin that shite Doctor Who and nick their budget and let’s have a return to form.

And how cruel are you guys? First shot of the show and we can see the Cool Wall in the background! USE IT you pumpletons!

And the news section could do with extra minutes, it used to be the one place for great one-liners and genuinely eyebrow raising stuff. Just seems a little flat atm.

the episode wasn’t as good as i thought it would be as on top gear you have a reputation of the car winning for example bugatti veyron against a personal plane and the bugatti won, also not enough explosions…….maybe ten minutes of the show blowing up a caravan? its just another idea but i have plenty more.

Enjoyed the Focus RS review. I much prefer it when more than one presenter is involved. Just a shame May didn’t pitch up in a third wild card.
The Porsche review needed a bit more talk about the car, and less Royal Mail facts.
I did however enjoy watching the British Army hunt down Jezza in the drug dealers Evo. Just a shame they didn’t leave him inside and use live rounds on him instead.

Not sure about this series at all. I think they are starting to believe their own hype. Its all too similar to previous series. I did want to see more races but in the format of a whole programme not squeezed in between other features. Its all getting a bit fake and silly, to be honest (Fiat 500 advert from last week thinly disguised as a cheap car feature, Jeremy supposedly being picked up by the mine clearing vehicle and being fired at with live rounds pinging off the Evo (trust me, the British Army wouldn’t allow that to happen with Clarkson in the vehicle)). Rant over. Blood pressure reduced.

Hmmm… not brilliant, but not terrible. The Focus vs Megane review whilst entertaining was rather pointless. It’s a bit like comparing a Caterham with a M3… yes, they’re both designed to go very bloody fast, but they have completely different agendas… so you can’t really pair them off against eachother.

The race, whilst well intentioned, was a bit silly tbh. Whilst the usual TG editing tried it’s best to make things look as close as possible (as per usual), it really was a one horse race, and the lads were not that horse. Although, strangely, I ended up actually liking the look of the Panamera… God save my soul. Although, with that options list, it does actually make me wonder if you actually get a drivable car for the entry level price alone…?

British Bulldogs… fun idea, but ultimately stupid. Of course the army wouldn’t be shooting live rounds at the car… a stray 50mm round beaning Jezza in the noggin might be entertaing, but a bit too messy from prime time BBC, sadly. And what a waste of a car… not my type of motor, but still, it could have been sold off and put to use by some other drug dealer. The shame of it!
Still, was interesting to see all the toys that the army get to play will… I never realised there was so many! The sight of the Trojan vehicle batter-ramming its way through a pile of rubble was quite awesome, although the film did end up becoming more of a PR exercise for the army than anything else…

It was decidedly ‘Meh’ on the Lolcat scale, in my opinion; I would rather have seen the Stig take the Jackal for a spin around the Top Gear track than see it chasing a ‘Barried up’ drug dealer’s Evo.

For those that didn’t notice; Jezza said that the Evo was “8 grand”, so I presume that they must have paid for it at a police auction to be able to take it and destroy it. The problem is, they would have paid with our licence fee money, so how it helps the public coffers escapes me right now.

The show needs a reality check; there’s too much auto pr0n and it’s like watching a TV version of Nuts magazine, or Mythbuster / Brainiac, but with cars. It’s gone a bit too far and needs to pull back from the edge before it goes over it.

What happened to the road tests of more normal cars for us mere mortals, or do we need to defect to Fifth Gear to get some commen sense testing?

Obviously Jezza wouldnt be fired at with live rounds, however entertaining it would be :P During the stamp race i would have liked more info about the Porche Panamera but did quite enjoy it. The interview with Usian Bolt was brilliant. Top Gear interviews always seem to show me a different side to people who ive always seen to be a bit aloof before, so good work! And the opening review of the focus vs the megane was brilliant, if only for the bickering between Jezza and Richard! From my point of view, nothing wrong with the shows format in any shape or form. People complaining that it “isn’t a car show” anymore should go and watch the quite dull by comparison fifth gear, damn right that top gear is firstly an entertainment programme, i watch it to entertained, not to sit through an hour of someone effectively reading auto trader to me. RS should of been put up against true hot hatches like golf GTI, Civic Type R etc etc. Seemed pointless putting them together. Both cars chould of been tested seperately on real roads.

Usain Bolt interview/on the TG track was definitely the best bit by far…BUT i’m afraid that the rest was mediocre at best…

Focus v Megane: ok but very 5th gear-esque and predictable…but 17 year old Essex boy racers probably liked it alot.

Porche Panamera v Royal Mail: this was really scraping the barrel – what happened to the epic challenges or at least something a bit interesting?? This was just two men sitting in a car driving mainly along Britain’s dreary grey motorways, making a bit of small talk, stopping at a garage for snacks and occasionally commenting on a plane overtaking them etc etc. DULL. DULL. DULL.

Clarkson/Evo v Army: cue excuse for lots of tarty camera shots and Clarkson hamming it up “they’ll be shooting at me…with LIVE rounds!!!”. Yeah, technically, some of the film shots were impressive but the whole “challenge” was pointless and silly – just an excuse for the producer/film crew to indulge themselves. It was a ham-fisted pantomime that only 12 year old boys might enjoy. Really naff.

In fact, I get the general feeling that this program is aimed more and more at teenagers who read “nuts” with a 30 second attention-span, than ever before. Don’t get me wrong, I have always loved the silly juvenile antics and general irreverence of the show and I have loved TG for years and years but I think we have to face facts – this is now just a cynical exercise in marketing a product and I really don’t think the 3 star’s hearts are really in it anymore – where there used to be real spontaneity, there is now much more emphasis on bad scripts and bad acting. Ok! Sorry to drag-on – hopefully the rest of the series will turnaround!!

Considering Jeremy is a ardent hater of all things Labour I surprised by the show. It was more like a propaganda exercise for all things owned y the UK plc!

Royal Mail do a fantastic job getting post around the country – they don’t!
The Army are great at catching drug dealer’s Evos in Dorset – I’m sure they are, but they are under funded and need help in Afghanistan
Bolt is a fast extolling the virtues of the Olympics – I’m sure he is, but the UK can’t afford to be funding 2012 Olympics, and the government isn’t funding UK athletes properly, right now, when it matters, and therefore our 2012 showing as a country is going to be miserable.

Im happy that Top Gear is getting more viewers in this format. It still includes decent car testing, so it still can entertain car enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. Thoroughly boring. I actually left the room to do something else because I couldn’t believe you had devoted an entire show to shamelessly and pointlessly advertising the Royal Mail and the Army. Watching James and Richard get sleep-deprived and haggard was not good entertainment, and I couldn’t care less how fast either a letter or a porsche gets across Britain. Also… you expected us to believe that Usain Bolt reads Heat magazine, not that you’d just given him that because he had nothing else to talk about? If the BBC hadn’t been showing the athletics earlier, I’d be completely baffled as to why he was on the show in the first place. Personally, I drive specifically to avoid running.

OK – got that out of the way. Now, about show 4…

Good idea about the Panamera vs letter race, but where I think all the above comments are coming from is that it was one-sided. usually there’s banter and tension between JC, RH and JM. In thsi one there was nothing really, and that’s a big gap. Where it could maybe have been done better would have been if Jezza had accompanied the letter – in the copter from the Island, through the sorting offices, in the planes, trucks, etc. That way, they could have had conversations between the Porsche and Jezza.

With the British Bulldog bit, it was cool, but obvious straight away that parking that distance away from the tank with the grabber on it was a bit of a set up.

Otherwise, preferred the Megan to the RS (in the same way I prefer the 500 Abarth to the Golf GTi) and Bolt is a cool guy – up to the point where the time was about to be announced, Then he leant forward like they all do!

good show but i did not like the army chase because it was so staged e.g when the army were firing on the move at Jeremy they were firing blacks because i did not see any tracers like when they shot the car at the end. also the camera so happen to be looking at the tank digger for just long enough so that Jeremy could get out before it got crushed. but don’t get me wrong i do like top gear.

much better then the last episode. i was realy looking forward for the panemera and focus rs test. but i felt kinda sorry for the EVO, cpt slow said well that the dealer dealed the drugs not the car. And if the justice system wasnt run by idiots the car would be sold and government would have more money. damn buirocracy. Anyway, great sow, really loved it.

The show was entertaining as always but a bit dull by Top Gear standards. I thought the letter race was a bit dull and the Bulldog bit was too scripted.

I preferred Top Gear when it was more unplanned and naturally funny. Most of the jokes now are rehearsed and not funny.

However, even a bad Top Gear is the best thing on Telly so I will definatly watch it a few more times on the iPlayer.

    Good Work TG Team.

great show, thought it was very entertaining. LOVE THAT MEGANE although it is slightly chav, as is the focus. Usain was fast considering that he is only used to left hand drive. I wonder how fast the ZR1 will be round the track, if dry ZR1 will beast the R8 V10 but wet R8. Cant wait for that!!

Look here half chip, had a chip and is the biggest chip, this isn’t about this weeks show but about an old show whereby you rubbished not just our greatest V8 home grown HOLDEN , but you gave it to all aussies upon our love of cars and our mental powers…
We are not all convics or lost generations of Englands drunken sailors who lost their way home.. but many of us enjoy the greatest of all joys of driving our unstated 6liter road eaters.
Holdens are ahuge part of Australian life and history.. with meat pies, football, kangaroos and yes Holden Cars.. it’s part of our manhood to ensure atleast we own and drive a V8 Holden… maybe this is something your can’t understand from the land of warm beer, cry baby footy players and 2liter 4pots that don’t go far…
maybe if you can out here and drove from Brisbane to Perth you would soon see why we love our Holdens and our small V8 6Liter goers……
Anyway I hope to get in on one of your UK shows when I’m over next time, and I hope I get the opportunity to chat with the three of you upon top cars on a TOP Show..

The directing, cinematography and editing were, as usual, absolutely amazing; the amount of talent shown by the crew is almost unbelievable.

Shame the same couldn’t be said about the show itself, which suffered from a lacklustre script and the fun-factor we have come to expect.

However… to launch Robins into space, sail a Toyota to France, race through Europe or Vietnam etc. takes a lot of cash. TG has always reflected the social and economic times and I think we’re seeing a credit-crunch series.

The best TG was always a big-budget show. I don’t think they have that budget for this series, so roll on the next one and hopefully the Director General will be a bit more generous !

Hi…not that good an episode, which is a shame, you should be better than that. Last week was really funny, especially James with the St Bernard, but it really grates when the humour is forced and unnatural and you seem to be aiming at an audience who have to have ‘comedy’ force fed them, with added signs and flashing lights so that they now that ’something funny’ is happening.

Less scripting please…but more decent cars…and thank god there was no super exotica on there last night…I will physically break my TV if I see another ‘new’ Zonda that looks exactly like all the others except it has 0.3 more bhp or somethign moronic. More hairing around in some Fast Fords (or equivalent) please…

Well first i’d like to say Top Gear rules no matter what. That said, this episode wasn’t excellent nor is it going down as a classic. It seems to me the pacing was way off. Started off great, but the panamera film is truly forgettable. It almost seemed as if not even the presenters enjoyed doing it. I mean Hammond seemed not bothered at all. It’s a shame you can’t do two comparisons on one show, because it would be nice to compare it to its rivals.

The Focus RS v Megane R26R was very cool indeed, and the star in the reasonably priced car was good too. The last film has me confused. It’s awesome to see what the Evo is capable of, especially when you upgrade it, but to see it be demolished was a bit sad. I thought last show was better than this actually, because the pacing was better. I mean the first part when they are talking about bad cheap cars and protesting was a bit dull, but the second part and its conclusion more than make up.

All of what I’ve said is based on a comparison with the best episodes. Keep it up guys!!!

I actually didnt think this weeks was that good. Firstly, racing a letter is quite frankly a ridiculous and pointless challenge…even if the car won by 3 hours, id still rather pay my 36p then drive 800 miles.

Also the last part of the show with Jeremy didnt seem to match up to your usual quality of show. It was more on par with one of Jeremy’s carwars DVD’s, the kind you find next to the chocolate in service stations which I personally wouldnt pay more than about 99p for.

I will still be watching next Sunday because I do love the show but as for this week – id stick a fork in it.

    The Ford v Renault piece was vintage TopGear;
    The Panamera clip needed to be longer so they could tell us more about the car;
    Usain Bolt was a fun guest;
Evo v Army was a little contrived, but still good fun. Live Ammo? Yeah right, only for the last shots.

Best episode of a slightly weak series so far. For some reason, it has seemed that each video has been rushed, as if you’re trying to fit too much into the allotted time…

This is a 5/10 show, (in Top Gear standards), you get
1 for the Stamp Race,(not enough info about the Panamera,Hammond and May not argueing enough about its pros, and cons).
2 for the megane vs.Focus RS. The Le Mans start was at least a Funny Idea. (Would like to see, how long Jezza would take, to get that harness on, lol).
1 for the news,(“Titbon” made me giggle a bit).
And 1 For Usain Bolt, (who really drove well).

BUT that last bit, with the British Bulldog game, was rubbish, Full Stop, all went wrong there.
Camera: Fitting a camera outside of the damaged EVO,but make it look ,like it was broken too.

Sound: Jeremy stating, they can t shoot while pursuing him, but a few seconds later you hear gunfire.TWICE actually.(trying too hard to add some Drama)

Logic: Jeremy discovers the gap, and “hides”
behind a bush. The First vehicle to arrive,(the Titan)??? its the slowest Vehicle of the bunch he was up against. All other Vehicles would have arrived earlier. and they would have shot the EVO to pieces, before he crossed that “Bridge”.Please, if you do Adverts for the British Army,(oddly enough) don t make them look as stupid, as they were made in that Film.
They are not. They don t reload their weapons like three times, before they actually shoot.Too much drama, not very realistic.(i was expecting to see those Oil Barrels to explode, when jeremy passed by). The idea had the potential, to make this a 8/10 or even a 9/10 show. But it failed. sorry lads, but i look forward to next show,(2 meh, in a row, is not your style), but i bet the coming shows will be better.

Loved the Focus vs R26R test, as for the rest of the show… a bit dry. The problem with James’ and Richards’ race was that there was NO CLIMAX whatsoever. Jeremy’s race against the Army was thrill packed, but a bit pointless though. I mean it was great fun to watch but I can’t see what they were trying to accomplish. Usain Bolt was brilliant, cant deny that. And one last thing… GUYS, PLEASE REVIEW MORE CARS, (more than two per show, because I would call the Panamera race a review). I felt the Army feature at the end was pretty unecessary – Too much CG, and Clarkson was so close that it could never have been believed as a live-fire excercise. Ultimately, beyond entertainment, what was the point?

I enjoyed the Focus/Renault test immensely, and Usain bolt was alright.. the Panamera article changed my mind, totally about that car – it looks excellent i think.

For me, Purple-patch Top gear was a great blend of main course and dessert, and it feels that it’s mostly dessert these days.

As pleased as I am to see the show’s focus shifting earthbound a little bit (case in point, last week’s show felt like vintage series 3-7 TG), I have to say, this series has really been a mixed bag so far, which seems so far so typical for a summer series.

Sorry to say it, chaps, but I think last night’s effort was kind of a dog. The Royal Mail film would have been a really good one, if perhaps you had managed to impart more information about the Porsche Panamera than you did about The Royal Mail. Don’t get me wrong, I was actually quite interested in the workings of the postal service (surprisingly…), but I’m not sure it should come at the expense of the road test of a highly controversial new Porsche.

I was absolutely bored rigid by Usain Bolt’s interview, but I seem to be in the minority here—nice enough chap, but clearly very uncomfortable. The less said about the annual recruitment film posing as an exercise in larking about, the better, except to say that it recovered very familiar ground in a not very interesting way. Some things work well time and time again, and never seem to lose their sparkle; clearly, the armed forces showcases don’t fit in that category. It’s worked well *once*: 06X05, with the Boxster S and the Merc SLGay. Move on, gents.

And while I am a bit more forgiving of bits being “scripted” or “contrived” than I used to be, it’s the contrived arguments among the lads that really irritate the piss out of me these days. Two cars settle differences on the track—odds are, Clarkson’s car will be the slower of the two, and he will spend the best part of a whole minute dicking about and slurring the time, or losing the time, or forgetting it, or lying about it, or setting fire to it. And either Hammond or May will start to halfheartedly argue and become insistent, and the whole thing is a complete waste of time because you can clearly see that they don’t really have anything actually invested in the argument. That’s my biggest beef these days: once upon a time, you had disagreements. More than occasionally, but it was hardly a foregone conclusion that you would at the end of a film. Now, it *is* a foregone conclusion that you’ll have a really heated, drawn out argument, even when it clearly isn’t interesting enough for any of you to give a toss about. In switching focus from cars to comedy, you’re turning it into a minstrel show with middle aged men. Here’s hoping the weeks to come offer some relief, lads…

Pretty obvious the Porsche wasn’t going to beat the Royal Mail; too much dignity at stake, and the same goes for the British Army.

@ The Stig :what exactly is your point? I don t get it.Its not about Army vs.Air Force vs. Navy. I don t think the RAF would build a bridge, just for a fugitive target, so they could chase him further. Would they? And most of all, How? with a hovering Harrier, so jezza could jump onto it and to the other side? LOL, (now that would be some drama). How about making Jezza challenge the RAF in a rebuilt Reliant(rocket)Robin? or the Royal Navy in his Toyboata? “Reach france before you get sunk”-challenge? If the script says, he ll win, then however small his chance would be.No matter how unlogic,he ll win.

Firstly love the show, but i am wondering do we really need a (much) shorter captain slow.
Thats right i am referring to Hammonds shocking disregard for his lack of hair style.
Did he suffer some terrible scaring during his dragster blowout that needs to be hidden away by a justin lee collins amount of hair growth???
It is no wonder that clarkson and may both made it into the top 100 sexiest men item in show 4 and hammond was nowhere to be seen.
Please, please, please make a point of this on the show, as this is worse than the teeth whitening catastrophe.

To reiterate what many here have already said: last night’s show could simply be interpreted(and has been by many viewers)as a blatant promotional video for the British army & the Royal Mail.Clarkson & co just looked like part-time extras who were purely incidental to the main afore-mentioned themes.

After building up such a huge fan base, how arrogant and cynical of the TG producers to serve up this all-gloss/no-substance rush-job to it’s loyal viewers.Of course it’s an entertainment show more than anything but last night’s show just left me cold for the most part.Maybe we should just accept that the glory days are gone…I need to watch some old TG on DAVE now before get too despondant!! ;)

Oh dear, I think Top Gear has jumped the shark.

You get the Panemera, a car that really needs a proper track test and so may people want to see it in detail and what do you do? Put it in a pointless race. The other two can’t hold it together without Jeremy, so it ended being really frustrating.

The Focus Vs Renault piece was better, but very routine.

The Army sequence was lame too. We know the Army are brave, professional guys, but the sequence showed us none of that professionalism and made them look like stooges for Jeremy. It was obvious what would happen and had no redeeming value.

The team have to go back to basics and start doing what they think is great, not what they think the audience will find funny.

Honestly the worst episode this series by far.

Don’t know what these ass-lickers are on about who come and comment on how amazing every episode is, which to be it normally is; but this one was poor.

The new Panemera, and you put it against a stamp! How boring. Get a real race, with cars perhaps? Since it is a CAR show.

Also the army part at the end was awful. Not even worth watching because you knew the outcome. How cares if they’ve got live ammo because they clearly will not shot him. Far too contrived.

Shame after last weeks amazing episode. Also why didn’t you use the opportunity to race against Bolt?

The boys generally think its running out of ideas and repeating itself a bit.

In 1 hour of TV I saw 3 car reviews (Megane, Focus and Porsche). That’s not good.

I know the old Style TG (in the early 90s) will never come back, but its still a car show.

I think the Porsche Panamera will be a strong competitor for the Quattroporte and is prolly overall a fine car, but not a proper Porsche (e.g. flat-six RR) by any measure. If the success of the Cayenne is any indication, the public will probably eat it up despite its ugliness.

This text here is a quote of other person comment what i like’d rather a lot:) :

“Usain Bolt interview/on the TG track was definitely the best bit by far…BUT i’m afraid that the rest was mediocre at best…

Ok! Sorry to drag-on – hopefully the rest of the series will turnaround!!”

My suggest will be:”Do it rather less, but do it great. The show must be as perfect as it can be, take as much time you need, so the end result will be what people don’t forget.”

I thought the Focus vs Megane was just amazing, classic Top Gear! Jezza’s fight against the army was also brilliant, though how he didn’t end up with a bullet in his arm I don’t know.

Usain Bolt might not have been as chatty as some of the guests, but it was pretty cool having him on – and his time was stunning! Not just fast on his feet.

I don’t think the race was the best, but then it isn’t so fun when you only get the point of view of one half, it’s not like we could hear the envelope saying “oooh, I’m ahead I’m ahead” and the tension between the two (or three) sides is what usually what makes the TG races so great.

I also agree with Hammond that Porsche need to stick to the 911. The Panamera is grim looking, though not as bad as the Cayenne which just looks like a hippo.

The only criticsm I have this week was the SITRPC even though he’s an olympic althelete I thought he was a bit dull and boring but I waited it out anyway because I knew that the segment would be over soon and then you’d get onto something else better. The race you did with the Porsche Panamera vs the Royal Mail was interesting and has made me change my opinion about our postal service being completely useless. The segment you did the game of British Bulldog with an Evo was OK but I didn’t find it all that exciting really even if they did use live ammo because I remember you’ve done something like that before with a challenger tank I think. I was gutted that they’d minced meated the car such a waste of a nice machine!! I liked the segment you did comparing the Ford Focus RS vs the Renault Megane R26.R when you were comparing the prices and value for money for each of the cars. I myself would have chosen the Focus ( I’d have changed the colour from phlegm mucus green to metallic blue) simply because it’s got a lot more kit than the Megane which to me just looked like stripped out boy racer car and even though the shape of that particular model was nice to look at, the old shape they’ve had I never really liked because it looked to me like a fluffalumpa’s fat arse or something. Made me laugh as well when Jeremy & Richard got told off by the director, bad as each other those two!

Overall I’ve liked this series so far, it’s an improvement from the last summer series you did.

PS: Heat magazine have seriously lost the plot, James May is way sexier than Jeremy Clarkson.

Was the soldiers aim that bad, must of fired about 1000 + rounds and the car was still in one piece basically, and what about Hammonds eyesight “there’s hundreds of holes in the bodywork” try about 30. Don’t get me wrong I like the show ,and we all know everything is scripted but don’t take us all for complete morons.

Good show. Loved the Porsche. Liked the Ford/Renault bit. Didn’t care for the tanks, ammo, and Evo. What game is this in the UK that is no longer allowed for boys in the school yard.? James mentioned it in the intro. Is it like your “conkers” ? Sorry I am a Texan.

I think the last part (“Evo VS army”) was actually very bad in therms of the all concept and script/acting. Right, UK still has an army with some hi-tech toys, we get it, so what? It was like that “Fiesta & army” episode… both parts were useless, in my opinion. Just leave the guns and fireworks show for hollywood.
The Panamera challenge was too quick and not really epic in a good old TG way… The rest of the show was actually good. Throw more news and bring back the cool wall. Also, the “Star in the Chevy crappy car” should be a bit shorter… it’s a bit boring while they talk about random not-car-related things.

Good show. Only criticism is that during the Focus/Megane race could you please put the Union Flag up the correct way, especially when in the same show you have the British Army. An upside down flag is a sign of distress.

the show was great as usual. one thing has been bugging me though, everyone is banging on about the scrappage scheme as if it a good thing. but everyone seems to have missed the fact that the car dealerships have bumped up the prices of their cars so the really is no saving at all.im surprised top gear missed this, and i was hoping you would have made a fuss about this.

Being chased by the army……been done!
Usain Bolt(in all due respect)…who is he?!a star?
The presenter`s are great (even after all these years).
Lets have a change of format, a few more averagely priced car reviews would be good. I just think the writer`s/producer`s need to come up with a fresh idea.

Generally a good episode, but please don’t insult our intelligence by telling us that Jeremy Clarkson is being shot at with live rounds. I can see shooting up the car without him in it – but come on! we’re not stupid. If that was really happening, he’d have a helmet and a Kevlar jacket on (not a Gap gilet).

Seriously not quite as good as past series but you can’t keep up a fantastic standard every single episode, its still brilliant though, no exotic races but thats due to the budget cut so not your fault, would love to see some more challenges and general cocking about,of course a lot of it is scripted it has to be to a point and the lads ares very natural between the scripted bits as well. Its hard to keep going when you’ve done so many brilliant things,i mean amphibious cars was fab but if you tried it again you’d get accused of being too “samey” then theres the really hard thing of thinking up new ideas,i feel for you guys you are getting a lot of stick on here and i know your hearts are all still in it and you are doing your absolute best. i will always love you, you got a bit of stick last series but tbh it was one of the best series ever for me, that fantastic episode with the !sensible” fiesta test, commy cars piece and Richard in that Caterham was awesome! You go boys you’re doing a great job under the circumstances and lookin forward to seeing you live in november.

I was interested to hear two songs from Dave Grohl side-projects with him on drums: in the Focus v Megane, there was The Prodigy’s Run With The Wolves, and, I forget where, Queens of the Stone Age’s A Song for the Dead. I kind of agree, though, this show wasn’t all that great and the new Jag XJ definitely deserved a place on the news. By the way, I think the XFR is going to be on this series – anyone know when?

Hi, I enjoyed the show as always, but it riled me somewhat; after reading *all* the comments on here – even the endless one’s about Hammond’s barnet (!) – and am happy that everything I would have complained about has been addressed. I’ll still add my personal touch, as I feel the whole task would’ve been a waste otherwise…

There are plenty of well written posts critising the increasingly scripted nature of the show (both in dialogue & action) – i’ll reiterate: WE DON’T LIKE BEING TREATED LIKE IDIOTS!
Cut the crap acting, staged chases and lies about the scenarios.

Last week’s feature in the desert with the rally car was outstanding (!) – I guess too expensive to repeat this series in current economic conditions tho… :’(

Great to see such an international superstar in the RPC! More of them, and less British soap/drama types please :)

    I’ll end on a rant:

It’s bad enough when battery/razor companies inflate their own prices through competitive advertising – the consumer loses out (!) – but when you waste MY TV tax advertising organisations funded by MY P.A.Y.E, it really p****s me off!

    And relax… ;-D

    6/10 – What’s going on?

The Focus vs Megane was grea. Two mad hatchbacks with the standard TG banter. Richard’s argument however is ridiculous. A little compromise would not hurt in the real world.

News – Pretty good. I like Hamster’s Han Solo look.

Panamera vs Stamp – Boring. A Hyundai Genesis looks better than the Panamera. Plus, a car vs a whole bunch of airplanes, the result is obvious. The journey itself wasn’t very exciting.

Army vs Evo – Poor. Even my “cocking about” tolerance has its limits. This was too much.

Same ideas with similar execution. It’s starting to get repetitive boys.

I had a pretty intresting idea(according to my friends) to how you could’ve made the Panamera film better and longer, more topgearish. (Not saying it’s bad, i really liked it!) Anyways, you should’ve made Clarkson do all the usual “post delivery stuff”, like pick up the mail, fly along with the mail, and you know, you know what i mean. Would’ve been pretty fun! Anyways, i’m really looking forward at next weeks Topgear, £1500 RWD Cars across france (if i’m not mistaken) :) Sounds Epic! Actually, not just epic, TopGearEpic!

Kind of a mixed bag for me. Focus vs Megane was good. I’d have liked James to come out in a third hot hatch to play, but still not bad.

News was alright, but the Cinque isn’t a “brand new” one. Maybe they meant the Cinque Roadster? Anyway, we know Hammond has an unhealthy fetish for Pagani, and it’s getting kinda uncomfortable watching him climax whenever “Zonda” is mentioned. Someone get him a new pair of pants.

Mail review. I’m not calling it a Panamera review, because it wasn’t one. I now know more about the Royal Mail than the newest Porsche. This is wrong.

SIARPC. Pretty good, nice to see someone that’s recognized internationally instead of just in the UK.

Army challenge. Live Ammo. Sure. And I’ve been to the moon. Listen, I know the show is scripted, but usually the scripted bits can blend in quite well. That was so horribly contrived it was painful. The Titan conveniently deploying it’s bridge, even though the Army would know he hasn’t crossed the chasm?? And then not guarding said bridge as their target slowly drives around the corner and over said bridge? And the Trojan picking up the Evo made me groan out loud. I’ve laughed at the show when they do something funny, I’ve shaken my head disapprovingly when they do something dumb, but I’ve never groaned before. And not because they ruined a good car. I groaned because it was so obviously staged it was terrible. Clarkson would have been killed if he was in that car. He”d be missing an arm and his head. It wasn’t entertaining, not when it purports to be real.

And the live ammo thing. This was almost insulting. They’re shooting at a car that has no bullet-proofing work done on it, no cover for the driver, and he’s driving more or less straight at the shooters. Then he gets out of the car and runs away on foot, instead of ducking down into the foot well and curling up. He even gets out of the car facing the shooters and runs pretty much straight at them. He doesn’t even hit the deck when he’s exposed. I think the car had more bullet holes on the field than in the studio. Except hen it was on fire. Then it had absolutely no bullet holes at all. Maybe it’s a magic car.

Really loved the cinematography in the Focus RS film. This episode just had so much in it, it felt like a 90 minute episode, which is great! Clarkson is officially nuts, that was rediculos, ripper TV, but disturbingly dangerous. It’s such a great show, made up of three great ingenious blokes, one possibly albino alien, and an extreemly creative production team. Long live Top Gear.

Once again, another great show. Not surprised the 39p letter would win, but I really thought the Porsche had a fighting chance. Great SIARPC segment with Usain Bolt, and Clarkson dodging the British army’s live ammo was somewhat exciting (and he survived!). The review on the Focus RS was ok, but I especially liked the fact you guys did a side-by-side comparison with the Renault. Hope your show does more comparisons like that with other cars in the future, it’s quite informative and entertaining. :P

The show has more of a rushed feel to it, I dont know maybe it will grow on me but the studio sequences dont have the impromptu magic that they used to. Dire episode, getting really bored of top gear now and i used to love it…..

Stuff Like the 24hr race, the trip to france in the gt40, zonda etc, Alfa Challenge, Veyron vs plane all fantastic top gear that I could quite happily watch over and over and quite often do on Dave

However this season the only 2 good bits so far were the megane and focus and the veyron and f1, so far everything else has been pants.

I love Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, as a team they are fantastic and when the previous seasons were on I always got the impression that they were 3 mates who loved cars and took the piss out of each other which was great, just like my mates arguing over who has the best car,

However now its like watching a group of people who have been learning bad jokes, the news thing which used to be very funny is now just a rant, v little car orientated stuff goes in there and the jokes and the scripting is getting really painful to watch, i felt myself actually cringing and even my girlfriend has said, whats happened to top gear, its gone all shit!

Please please please guys stop trying so hard, your ruining it!

I think that the Porsche race was a bit dull. Some nice cinematography, but if the race is 800 odd miles on motorways (mostly in the dark too) then it is never going to be a classic. The army vs. Evo VII was very ‘Channel 5′ too. Not relevant or funny (personal opinion). Not the usual quality (maybe the worst since the Mark Wahlberg episode).

Maybe this episode was aired at an unfortunate time (for itself), as the first three episodes of this series were some of the best ever. So far, as a series, this current one is still fantastic.

Watching the “new espisodes ” last night – I know they were shown in Britain last year but, as you were “slagging” Indian driving and cars – with which I concur and is very funny, it occurred to me that with the Manaro and all I would hate to think you hadn’t been introduced to the ‘Bush mecahnics’ of the Northern Territory

The other is – glad the Manaro passed- one of our stduents , Intern teacher, travels to and from her intensive study blocks in Perth from Meekathara 765kms one way in her very cool and comfortable black Manaro. followed by the feature on slowing the national speed limit and the reasons for it was good too. Tiff and the gang have TG boys on the ropes here…

Hammond needs a haircut. Or a ponytail. Your choice..

Didn’t like the army race at all, what was it about? I don’t think it was to show drug dealers can make a car better, so it must have been a Government commercial for the army, ‘join now, look what toys you could play with’. Which is stupid. The ‘green’ Ford army test from last series (?) was the best thing ever, this was the worst.

The Mail race and Renault vs. Ford were great though!

Live fire .. sure .. most viewers are older than that .. is it me or is there an imbalance in voice/music, music way too loud or voices to much softened? Liked the Ford RS thing and the Porsche/mail ‘race’. The news should have included the new Jaguar indeed (or does Clarkson need time to let it grow on him?).

I’m a huge fan of Top Gear and the format as a whole. Couldn’t imagine the show with anyone else other than Clarkson, May and Hammond.
That said I didn’t think this was the best episode i’ve ever seen (7 out of 10) and I think had the British Army not been involved I would have marked the show as low as a 6 this week.
Favourite episodes so far this season in order of preference:
    1 – Ep 2
    2 – Ep 3
    3 – Ep 1
    4 – Ep 4

What was the point in doing a test on a 4 seat Porsche when you didn’t even commment on what the space is like in the back or how big the boot is etc. I’m not advocating a 5th Gear like review but you may as well have done the drive in a 911.

Like many others have said the show is losing it’s way a little, almost beginning to believe its own hype. Less scritping please and go back to 3 blokes who love cars talking about and driving them.

Sadly not a good outing for the boys this time. Usually i am crying with mirth for the whole show, barely got a giggle this time. The army machineary was impresive but irrelevant. Live ammo, well maybe at the end when tey shot the car into holes but that was it. Poor race there and also with the royal mail, i was digusted that the post used three planes to trasnport letters around our little island, what carbon footprint has my mail got now??? Used to go by train. No wonder they are folding under the weight of transportation and staffing costs.

Somehow even the star (who i hadnt heard of) even lacked sparkle, he could hardly talk at all by the look of it, very fast bloke though. Still not entertaining as a guest. Come on guys, you are the best show on telly, lets get back to those brilliant bits from previous wees that are such compulsive viewing for petrol heads and norms alike.

Great Episode! – 1 & 4 have definitely been a lot better than 2 & 3, but I’m still missing some innovation. The great thing about TG in the past was its ability to reinvent it self, and come up with new stuff. Season 13 has been a little too much “what we did the last couple of years”, e.g. comparing 3 rubbish cars in the “I’m 17 and need a car challenge” – been there, done that! Move on TG!

Ever wondered what happened to the amphibious Toyota, the Alfa/Saab stretch limo and the Reliant Robin rocket that were drowned/cut in half/fired into space by Jeremy, James and Richard in the good name of Top Gear?

Since not even the dodgiest used car dealers would buy them, we’ve collected all the battered, modified and generally ruined cars from the world’s biggest car show and gathered them together in… the Top Gear Enormodrome!

Take a look around the cars from the challenges, get a rare behind-the-scenes view into the show’s production office, and enjoy clips of some of the best Top Gear moments. The display, which is here for the rest of the year includes:

    The Amphibious Cars
Can you modify a car to cross the English Channel? Or even a moderately large lake? We’ve hauled up Jeremy’s Nissank and Richard’s Dampervan from the deep as proof that amphibious commuting is Really Quite Difficult.

    The Double-Decker Cars
Behold the mighty the two-tier creations from the biggest Anglo-German fight since… well, we won’t mention that. Marvel at the double-decker Jag XJ, Metro, E-Class and Golf – all with the accelerator, brakes and gears on the bottom car… and the steering wheel on the top. Topply…

    The Stretch Limos
When Jeremy, James and Richard set out to turn a bunch of rusty second-hand cars into luxury stretch limos, things were always going to end badly. Exactly how badly became apparent when a trio of celebs arrived at the glitzy Brit Awards. Or, rather, didn’t arrive.

    The Reliant Rocket
Can you make a car fly into space? Well, if it’s a car as stunningly aerodynamic as the Reliant Robin, and you’ve got enough rocket fuel to blow Wiltshire into the seventeenth century, the answer is… er, no. Not really. Take a look at the battered results.

    The Toyota Arctic Hilux
Jeremy and James attempted to break a new record by racing to the North Pole in a car. A specially adapted Toyota Hilux with tyres costing £2,500 each, was equipped with a whole host of modifications including rifles and extra fuel tanks carrying a freeze-resistant mixture of diesel and Avgas.

    The Homemade Police Cars
Taking pity on the poor British bobbies in their yawn-inducing Vauxhall Astra diesels, the boys set out to create a trio of more exciting police cars. Strangely, the police weren’t so keen on the boys’ rusty death traps, so we’ve got them on display instead.

    The Austin Princess
You might think that British Leyland never made a good car, but Jeremy, James and Richard disagreed. Which is why they bought a 1978 Austin Princess, filled it full of water and then took it for a lap of the Top Gear test track. It made sense at the time.

    The Cheap Alfa Challenge
The boys have always said you can’t be a proper petrol head unless you’ve owned an Alfa Romeo. But can you buy one for under £1000 and complete a series of rigorous challenges without exploding or setting on fire? James’s classic Alfa GTV is proof that you, er, can’t.

    The Endurance BMW
With a million gallons of home-grown biodiesel lying around, the boys decided they needed a way to get rid of it all. So they rolled up at the Silverstone 24 Hour race with a crudely sponsored BMW 3-Series, a whole load of biscuits… and the Stig.

    The Anne Hathaway’s Cottage
Why do car interiors always have to be so, well, dull? Jeremy, an interior designer and a gaggle of Polish blokes set out to create a car with the interior ambience of a country cottage – flagstones and wood burner included. Take a look at the weighty result of their labours.

    The Olympic Mini
Ever wondered if a rocket-powered Mini can out-jump a skier? No? Not even a rocket-powered Mini strapped to skis and filled with a tonne and a half of explosive thrust? Well, it can’t. Not even close. It took a damn good shot at it, mind…

    The Suzuki Swifts
Having mastered car football in Toyota Aygos, James and Richard turned their attention to Canada’s favourite sport/warfare: ice hockey. In a bunch of Suzuki Swifts, with Jeremy as referee. We’ve got the remnants…

    The Renault Avantime
The Top Gear team tried to turn an obscure French family car into a sports car capable of beating an Evo X around the track. The boys spent literally days altering the suspension, brakes, tyres and engine power until in the end the car caught fire.

    now top gear episode 4
    usain bolt =funny
    misto=funny
    porshe=funny
    hot-hatches=funny
    hammond=small

TG should really get Clarkson and Hammond testing more “normal” cars together like the RS and Megane because they can do it in an informative, yet humourous way.

It doesn’t have to be supercars all the way…

There’s such polarised comments on this, it’s almost funny. There’s no doubt I think that the emphasis in the show has shifted hugely since about whatever series was on in about 2005. From being a car show that was funny, it’s now a funny show that has cars. I know this has been said millions of times already, but it depends on what you want from the show. The people that are saying “Amazing!!!! It never fails to bord me! Love it!” clearly are happy, but others like myself possibly are more in favour of a car show. There’s enough comedy around.

And the piece playing over the demise of the Evo was Amuel Barber’s Adgio for Strings, recently popularised among some quarters by some DJ butchering it horrifically.

In particular, I was quite astounded with the glorious English countryside backdrops throughout the Panamera piece. What a beautiful country you all have over there! Top Gear should get an extra stipend from the government for helping the local tourism industry. Just magnificent.

Producers, if you read this – it was stupid! “Live bullets”, Jeremy being “lifted” up in a car in that amazing (!!!) army machine… I even doubt that it was really drug dealers car that should have been destroyed by police. Why don’t you do star in a reasonably priced BALLASTED car to make it fair on heavier drivers. Just add ballast up to the equivalent of 2 average people so that the little squirts don’t get an advantage and that nice young man would be the fastest. You would also get interesting people on like Robby Coltraine (A confirmed petrol head) and Lenny Henry who I expect would be very good.

@475 Quote: “I’m sorry but this episode was… crap actualy. Maybe these coments are mostly written by 8-year olds”.

That’s the point unfortunately: most of the positive comments are probably from kids because the show is seemingly catering mainly for 8 to 16 year olds now (with the very occasional adult joke thrown in for the rest of us)but they may as well have a children’s presenter voiceover on most of the features – “Ooh look at the big shiny army vehicles! Aren’t they scary!!These friendly monsters look after us when naughty foreigners play nasty”,”This is what we call the ‘Roy-al Maaail’…can you say that? They have eee-normous areoplanes that go whoooooosh and they also have biiig noisy lorries just for you, so you can post that birthday card to granny!”,”Drug dealers are baaad kiddies! This is what we do to their nice shiny brum brums!!”etc etc.

Richard Hammond is in his element now – he loves to host kiddie’s programs. Anyway, sorry to sound so cynical but i’m just so p*ssed off with being treated like a moron after being so loyal to TG tv/TG mag for so long.Talking of the mag – did anyone notice how the last issue espeically was mainly just a promotion for the current tv series? I’ll watch the final few episodes and hope for better but I think i’ll have had enough (tv and mag).Oh well,it’s good tv for the kids-makes Sundays a bit more bearable before that dreaded return to school on Monday! :)

Btw, the army v evo thing was a blatant rehash of something they did a few series ago – I guess they count on most of their current audience not having enough of an attention span to remember further back than 5 minutes…i’d love to know what the producer and other people responsible get paid for churning this out…

You know what? You are relaxed, heard compliments and stopped paying attention to criticism. Go back to Earth. show 13 * 4 stupidly impossible to watch until the end. Level = pensioner knits in front of the TV. You need a shake. Top gear is one of three normal show on TV – it will be disappointed if you go rotting

Re: Post 339 (Hi Top Gear)

At last! Somebody agrees with me that the TG team have been cribbing from Nuts, Zoo and all of the ‘lads’ magazines for inspiration. What with flowery shirts, dodgy haircuts and now pandering to the ‘Barry’ culture, it’s all gone down the gurgler. What about more TG second-hand tests, for those of us who can’t afford automotive pr0n, like the presenters? I mean, some people actually buy cheap cars to get to and from work, not just for target practice or for silly stunts… are the presenters so far removed from reality that they can’t see this? Maybe they need a pay cut, to focus their minds…

By the way, why did TG contact DVLA to see if Lamborghini has safety recalled the Gallardo, as it seems to have become the automotive equivalent of the Hindenburg?

Firstly i am a huge fan of top gear and have watched it from the start.

Much better than last weeks attempt although this series has just been a bit fake and a bit silly.

I would really like to see a more down to earth show with a bit more point to it. It’s just turned into a kids program with pretty pictures and big explosions.

Someone else said it before me:

‘Top Gear gets more like a crap episode of Brainiac every week.’

This isn’t a kids program. Please go back to being a car program that is funny, not a comedy program that features cars, because those 3 are not comedians.

I don’t know what everyone is saying about it being a great episode? Have you not watched Top Gear before???? This is the worst one of the season by far, and possibly the worst in a couple of seasons. Go back, watch Season 10, and seasons 4-8. They are so much better. Season 8 still stands as by far my favorite season.

As per this episode, the army bit was clearly staged. The only redeeming quality was the review at the beginning, which was perfect. SIARPC was alright, news was good but the race was ho-hum.

4 points for the review at the beginning + 2 for the race = 6/10.
Very mediocre but still better than anything else on TV. I don’t know what I’d do out here in the US if I couldn’t get Top Gear online! Oh well, back to England soon anyway.

What Top Gear really needs right now is Presenter In A Reasonably Priced Car. The show needs to rediscover it’s roots and for the presenters to get their feet back on the ground. Stop behaving like sixth form students, lose the mid-life crisis that’s obviously affecting Jezza if not the others, quit trying to brown-nose to ‘Middle England’ and accept the fact that until the economy picks up again nobody really cares about uber-expensive auto porn, except maybe the presenters themselves. Just how much disposable income do they think Joe Public has these days? Most people are grateful if they are still in a job right now!!

Merlin01 your prespective is too personal, but not global. You see, TG was always more an auto motor show pornography, rahter than factual auto motor show. And you now what? The ppl love it for this. It’s not just another motor show, it’s unique, and that’s why it’s been always top of the leader board in the motoring shows from all the World. Maybe some hate it, maybe even they can’t stand around the TV when it’s online. But that’s normal. The other fact is that milions around the world love the TV. Even if most of them don’t have money for Lambo, but that’s not the point :)

I don’t know what everyone mocking the program is on about! It’s an entertainment show and it is very good at that. I am allways longing for more of it once it’s finished. If anyone needs useful information about used cars, buy a car magazine or research it on the internet. If that’s not enough, watch fifth gear on C5, there you can get your fix with infos about “normal cars”!
The TG show is hugely popular and you know why, because it is very entertaining. It takes your mind of what ever problem you might have.
Thanks Top Gear, keep it going!

I have to say tha, as a car fan rather than a chat show fan, I’m starting to find the series getting a bit too samey. Some items are good, but I’m now in the habit of using Sky+ and then fastforwarding the boring (SIARPC) bits – making the programme about 40 minutes rather than an hour. I find the one-offs (Vietnam, GTR vs Bullet Train etc.) the best, but you obviously can’t do those all the time. Am I the only one to have found the british bulldogs item totally staged and unintersting???

Another question about the music. In Evo vs. Army piece, there’s another bit of music that plays (it’s not Adagio) for a moment. Starts about 53:30 into the show. Jeremy talks over the lyric so I can’t pick up what they’re saying. It’s female voices saying something like “elephant…elephant…”. Jeremy says (over the music) “the thing is that at this speed he can’t fire his gun…not without shooting every bambler in Dorset.”

What is *that* piece of music from?

fifth gear is crap on entertainment value… but you cant fault them on their information content.

ok, off topic. i have a friend with a s reg INTEGRA and he says the car was voted the best front wheel drive car at its time of release, however times and cars change as we all know, i have raced it (ON A TRACK) on my 600cc 100BHP R reg bike and do you know, proformance wise it is close to a mazda 6 mps 2.2 turbo! so my question is do you think the integras time would be close to the focus rs or the french match box car?? also think would make a great clip old honda vs new car of the same calibre? maybe the renault megane from last week? cheers. ps jezza did say years ago it was the best handling front wheel drive car, or something to that twiter?

Ho ho hooo, loads of comments, more intelligent than the usual stuff.

Sorry guys that i havevn’t been here sooner to CONGRATULATE you 3 and all the other guys on the background , in making a truly improved and bombstic, sensible, explosive, musically enhanced and carried – Show Le ROCK – !!

The musical background, has been increasd to TOP NOTCH !! because music transforms everythink, it can make something boring interesting, ad when used in combo with a proper presentation…..it just Tops the bar!!

    well done TOP gear!!

The 3 have finaly realised that they get paid to do a job, and not to fool around thinking their untouchable(big boss must have given you guys a knock on your heads). So in other words, you 3 are taking your roles as presenters more serious, and are now giving us a truly bombastic show, without using explosives every 3 min. .

Every week, so far you have come with a surprise and but visible effort into the presenting, scripts & Play.

This Series in my oppinion is the BEST EVER!!!
