May’s moving in

Posted by Jamie Hibbard at 4:23 pm on Wednesday September 2, 2009

A month or so ago we wrote a blog about Captain Slow’s new show, James May’s Toy Stories, in which he attempts to build a house entirely from Lego.

Well, the project is coming along swimmingly, as you can see from these pictures on photo sharing site Flickr.

James May's Lego houseThe pics, taken by the volunteers who helped build the house, show how the three million or so individual Lego bricks were put together to create larger, house-sized bricks, that were then used to create a full-scale living space.

It’s a cool-looking building, and we expect Grand Designs presenter and friend-of-Top-Gear Kevin McCloud will go quite nuts for it.

“If I wake up buried under a pile of bricks, I’ll know it’s gone wrong,” James says of his sleepover, where he’ll be shutting his eyes on a Lego bed and sitting down on a Lego loo.

If you were there on the day helping to build the house, let us know how you found the experience. But if you weren’t, just let us know what you think of the project.

Pics of James courtesy of meivocis, check her Flickr photostream.

I think it’s a brilliantly fantastic idea, weatherproof, strong, not necessarily hurricane proof, but that shouldn’t be much of an issue in England.

I can’t imagine a Lego john being particularly arse-friendly though – I’ve trod on a Lego brick before, it was unpleasant – and those very sharp corners on the house aren’t all that child friendly.

Other than that, imagine builders making Lego houses all day once/if this is a success. How colourful! They could have Lego mugs (but not Lego tea), Lego helmets and lego-capped bootsies, using nothing more than bricks and glue. Ok, and a wooden structure, judging by the Flickr pics.

I bet Ole Kirk Christiansen and his grandson Kjeld will be pleased! (They invented / run LEGO respectively)

What happens to the house when it’s no longer needed? Disassembly? Incineration?

    Anyway, good job.

    Thats cheating!
“Captain Slow’s new show, James May’s Toy Stories, in which he attempts to build a house entirely from Lego.”

its not theres a wooden structure, yes thats how most houses are made these days but it would have been much cooler if it was completely lego woth lego floors and suppurting lego walls, and it would have been nice if it looked more like a lego house rather than a square box,

but all that said i think he should build more and rent them out as holiday lets, i’d rent one!

i 1nce built a lego house, not that big, obviosly, it was the size of 3 house bricks and it survived unscaved when i kicked it across the floor it bounced 3 times. so… theres aproximatley 6milion bricks in a real house, so, 3 -:- 6million is 2million so lego house the size of a real one would survive 2million times the force of the small one being kicked across the floor and bounceing 3times. but could a real house the size of a house survive that force?

@williamozzy – the only reason they have a wooden frame was caus insurance wouldn’t let them build the house without it

^I happen to know that caus I’ve been twice to see the construction. But I have to say, who decided to put the house where it is, and torture everybody to an insanely long walk up a ridiculously steep hill? (My legs were almost dead by the time I got there)

And just to let you know, I was (if HTML doesnt work, that’s meant to be in italics) there for the big build day. Apart from queueing for over two hours, with 430 people in front, it was worth it, mainly caus at our session – 1:30pm to be precise – James said “hello” as he passed our table (and I think it was specifically at me caus I did stare loads when he passed) *jumps up and down, still happy from that experience*

And as for building the bricks … erm … I think sore fingers says it all

Well I don’t want to say too much because Plum have asked us not to, but there’s quite a few of us still turning up nearly every day and working hard to get finished. I’ve even had my parents and my partially-sighted gran helping out – they have plenty of experience of clearing up and sorting lego from when I was small!
We’ve had a few setbacks, but it’s coming along nicely and the end is definitely in sight. I just hope that once it’s done they’ll let us take a bottle or two of Denbies’ wine up there and spend a little while admiring what we’ve helped create. Maybe one evening, so those who’ve had to go back to work can come back and join us. I’d certainly like a group photo, as we’ve all become quite good friends.

In response to other comments: We’ve not used any glue (so far) and yes the frame was for insurance purposes. It’s been a *huge* pain working around it. Also, as those of us who’ve been working up at the site can confirm, it’s not particularly weatherproof yet and we all got rather soggy today, but hopefully that’s just because we’ve not put the roof on yet!

williamozzy ( comment 5) is wrong, you need a wooden structure to build ANY house, just so you can hold it up, you couldnt make it ALL out of lego, you would need pillars EVERYWHERE!

and it never claimed to be made ALL out of lego
    anyway.

A full scale house made of Lego. How is it possible. Were can you find the time to make such a amazing creation?.Where is the house located James May?Will it be open to the public? If so I will be there that is most-likely garranted.Next a full-sized lego Car with engine that works. Then you could get the Stig to do a lap and see how fast it can go round the the track. It could do a reasonable time knowing the Stig. What do you say to that little challenge James(Did this come out of a shed)

Actually, Joker123, an all-lego construction WAS originally planned, and some sections were even tested – it just couldn’t be *insured* that way. The wooden frame is actually making the build harder, as those of us still working on it know only too well!

Inspired idea!! Hopefuilly after they have finished it and James has stayed there perhaps they could move it to legoland as it would be such a shame just to dis-assemble it after the hours of work that has gone into it’s construction..
