An American version of TopGear: it’s official!

Yes, it’s true. The History channel and BBC Worldwide announced today that work has begun on an American version of TopGear, with US presenters fronting the new show.

The first series of ten episodes will air on History next fall (an American-only season not dissimilar to ‘autumn’, we believe), though exact dates are yet to be finalised. It will be hosted by Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara and Rutledge Wood.

Tanner Foust’s name should be familiar to TopGear faithful. He’s a renowned stunt driver (The Bourne Ultimatum, no less) and X-Games rally gold medallist who’s also done the business at Pikes Peak and in international ice racing championships. Not only that, he beat Jenson Button around Wembley Stadium during 2008’s Race of Champions. Rumours he learned everything he knows from Captain Slow remain unconfirmed.

Adam Ferrara (very difficult not to type ‘Ferrari’ there, force of habit) is a renowned petrolhead who ranks the Pagani Zonda F Roadster as his top car. Only, we may assume, because the Hyundai i10 1.2 hasn’t made it to US shores yet. He’s also a stand-up comedian and stars in firefighting drama series Rescue Me.

Rutledge Wood is a race analyst best known for reporting on NASCAR. Think Martin Brundle with a beard, but with no need for the words ‘right turn’ in his lexicon. We’re impressed that he owns a 1953 Plymouth Suburban, and even more impressed that it was given to him by The King himself, Richard Petty. That’s a good friend to have.

It hasn’t been decided yet if the show will air in the UK, but we’ll keep bringing you the details as soon as we can. Watch this space.

What do you think?

Why have they planned 10 episodes to fit in good american cars? surely you would only need one

This is going to be seriously lame – with all those strict laws in the US – this will be more “Low Gear” or “Top Gear Light” than anything else. Lame Lame Lame

tg is BIG Money, yeah…
i only pray original TG keep sharp and fresh and… victorious

OK that’s all well and good, but surely they won’t stop bringing proper Top Gear in the States because “we got our own version now”….right?

Why do an American version of the British Top Gear? Just bring the British version to the U.S. I live in the states and we do get top gear here but it’s just the same reruns time and time again. I do love the show but I don’t see how the U.S version could be anywhere near as good as the U.K version.

Andy Wilman are you listening?

Please please please do NOT let those idiots at BBC take the UK version of Top Gear off of the BBCAmerica line up. I am begging you. Pleading actually on bended knee. Don’t let them do that……

As for the US version of TG, well they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but honestly, I shudder to think of what this is going to be like. Best case scenario I guess would be that it would die a quiet peaceful death at the end of the 10 eps, with the participants no worse off, but sadly, I doubt that if anything this will be very very messy.
Or, a miracle could occur, and it could end up being okay, but from what I have heard of other attempts, it hasn’t gone well…….

Charisma-free TV folks…stay tuned…

Great Idea ! Now, what about “Top gear Canada” ? We have lots of snowmobiles here in the “colony”

They shoulda recruited Lou Santiago from the old Muscle Car TV show on Spike.

Why do I get the feeling that I’ll have another show to add to my list of “Hated American TV Programs”? I know of Mr. Faust, but even here in America, I’ve never even heard of the other two. I think we’re going to need a stamp for car shows that reads, “Like Top Gear, but not near as good.”

Surely being in the US it will be called “Stick shift”. They certainly wouldn’t have to focus on handling…”corners?! what are they?!”

Is there a shortage of proper first names in US?

No thanks. I watch Top Gear for the entertainment value. Now that they’ve tagged a “US” at the end of the title, I can’t say I’m too excited. When it comes to TV shows here, everyone is all hyped up for the first half of the season or so, then we get bored of it because another season of American Idol or House airs and forget all about the new show. It then slowly fizzles away and dies in a little “Good but not simple enough for most Americans’ low TV show standards” corner of Tv history.

this is gonna suck

why would they show it in the UK?
its gonna be so bad that only americans will want to watch it

I don’t want a US version of the show here… It will be no where close to as good as the British version and I’m gonna puke when they test drive/ recomend a Korean “sports car.” Car companies are becoming “Global,” and so should Car shows!

I have started to purchase the full seasons of the real Top Gear since it is the onyl way to get it in the states… ugh…

Their lap time board will consist of either a lap time at an oval track or a 1/4 of a mile time.

Can’t wait to see their ‘UK Special’; Surely a race from Penzance to Hull using a Sinclair C5, an Austin Allegro, and a Sopwith Camel….

I hope it is better than the Australian version. They more advertise cars instead of critisizing them. Also the Australian guys are simply not funny. Trust me I lived there. Keep up the great work Top Gear. Can’t wait till the new season.

I’m an American and I think that this is a BAD idea! Leave Top Gear alone!!!

This. will. suck.

I want the real Top Gear. Not some wanna-be. I don’t understand why they don’t just get a US Correspondent. And replace the stupid Brit-erviews with a piece from the US correspondent (when it airs in the US, of course).

I’ll happily put my name in the hat to be the correspondent, I say that cuz it seems that’s how they’re making presenter choices. By pulling a name out of a freak’n hat.

I offer my services to this great endeavor. While these gentlemen have interesting pedigrees will they really appeal to the gear/petrol heads of America? What makes TG great is the relationships of the hosts and their banter while they do their work. I fear for a crew of three “Ice” characters from TopGun.
