Yes, it’s true. The History channel and BBC Worldwide announced today that work has begun on an American version of TopGear, with US presenters fronting the new show.
The first series of ten episodes will air on History next fall (an American-only season not dissimilar to ‘autumn’, we believe), though exact dates are yet to be finalised. It will be hosted by Tanner Foust, Adam Ferrara and Rutledge Wood.
Tanner Foust’s name should be familiar to TopGear faithful. He’s a renowned stunt driver (The Bourne Ultimatum, no less) and X-Games rally gold medallist who’s also done the business at Pikes Peak and in international ice racing championships. Not only that, he beat Jenson Button around Wembley Stadium during 2008’s Race of Champions. Rumours he learned everything he knows from Captain Slow remain unconfirmed.
Adam Ferrara (very difficult not to type ‘Ferrari’ there, force of habit) is a renowned petrolhead who ranks the Pagani Zonda F Roadster as his top car. Only, we may assume, because the Hyundai i10 1.2 hasn’t made it to US shores yet. He’s also a stand-up comedian and stars in firefighting drama series Rescue Me.
Rutledge Wood is a race analyst best known for reporting on NASCAR. Think Martin Brundle with a beard, but with no need for the words ‘right turn’ in his lexicon. We’re impressed that he owns a 1953 Plymouth Suburban, and even more impressed that it was given to him by The King himself, Richard Petty. That’s a good friend to have.
It hasn’t been decided yet if the show will air in the UK, but we’ll keep bringing you the details as soon as we can. Watch this space.

Too bad the show doesn’t have the unique qualities of Top Gear UK; namely wit, entertainingly informative banter and the ability to make non car enthusiasts (like me) go through withdrawls when Top Gear is on break. We Americans may be witless, but we thrive on good entertainment…Top Gear US isn’t it. They are “presenters” who are posers. Jeremy, James, and Richard actually know stuff about cars becasue they have always loved them. Tanner IS good, but the others don’t bring much to the table. Therefore, their interaction with one another is lacking depth and humor.

I have to be honest. I am an America, and I love watching the British version, while I tolerate the US version. The Brits seem much more relaxed, witty, and generally talented. I wonder whether it’s direction, line-production, writing, or simply casting. The US guys definitely are qualified to write a car magazine. I’m not so sure, though, about their ability to present a TV show with such a legacy of minimally-bridled fun.

The American version of the show blows. Given the right lines, two of the hosts are ok. But host Rutledge Wood has got to go – please! He’s on max volume all the time with no inflection or any bit of charisma. You can tell the hosts don’t mix and the show is terrible even for the producers because it cuts midway on a sentence or scene to something else. It’s being patched to make it work and it doesn’t.
This show is making me upgrade my cable tv subscription just so I can get the BBC and watch the real thing.

The problem with this show is not entirely the content its the hosts. Keep Taner Foust hes not too bad, but Adam Ferrara is as lame as a mule, and that other guy ehh could do better. Also find better screen writers or something. I personally still prefer the original Top Gear.

America’s version of Top Gear is like a patch and the real Top Gear is like a real cigarette. I absolutely love the idea of an American Top Gear(being an American). Too bad the people who are making what I’ve watched the last 3 weeks don’t share the same love. It needs to be noted that the Top Gear UK version is blessed with 3 hosts that share a comedic chemistry that is rare to come by and even harder to duplicate. The American Top Gear should be hosted by people that America already associates with when it comes to cars and a sense of humor. These 3 guys lack luster.

Well, I’ve seen all three episodes of the American version. It simply doesn’t work, mostly because of the casting. The inferior American version has a real car expert (Foust, who actually KNOWS cars), a comedian (Ferrara, who isn’t funny) and a soft, effeminate NASCAR devotee (Wood, who no man really wants to hear from). The original U.K. version is vastly superior to the U.S. version, but I’ll keep watching it until it goes off the air (which is probably soon) because I like seeing the cars, but I VERY much look forward to season 16 of the UK Top Gear.

How could they make an entire episode of top gear with out even driving a single worthwhile car. If I want to see three $1000 cars driving around I can look out my window. The coolest car on the whole show was the Boss 302 Laguna Seca Mustang and they didn’t even drive it. The only reason I watch top gear is to see them burn a set of tires off of amazing cars. Please find new hosts who actually like cars and stop trying to be exactly like top gear UK.

This is just wrong. Top Gear has become so watered down and money grabbing. What started as an informative, entertaining car show, we now have an Australian version, a load of crappy merchandise (Stig masks, mugs, calendars, etc etc) and now this nonsense. There’s not an original idea here, let’s just buy the rights from the British and repackage as our own. Rubbish.

After reading these comments, looks like everyone loves the new TG.
Wow, what a terrible show spin off of the original. Tanner works okay, but the other two guys need to go.
For god sakes, Clarkson has a double PhD with wit. I’m waiting for Adam Ferrara to say “how U do’in” and Rutledge Wood is witty enough to wear a shirt that say’s “I got wood”.
Get new hosts and retry.

The American series is dreadful, it is just getting worse by the episode. The hosts seriously lack characters and the jokes aren’t even remotely funny. The American series is the worst of all UK, Australian and even the Russian series.

Honestly, living in the states, I must agree with my british gearhead bretheren when I say, not nearly as humorous. The descriptions these men give in there presentations seems to have all the same information as usual but, this information comes with a drab boredom. They can’t even introduce “The Stig” properly. I say, if you want the American version to survive, replace the entire cast. It’s looks like Top Gear, but doesn’t sound or feel like Top Gear. I’ll be setting my DVR to catch the British version.

I LOVE TOPGEAR!!!…. On BBCA of course. I never miss an episode, and my DVR has BBC Topgear as the #1 priority. So when I heard that they’re launching a version here stateside, it made my number 2 spot. Now after watching several episodes all I can say is, De ja vue! I just watched the GM episode and it was an exact ripoff of a BBC episode. The US producers apparently have no ideas of their own.
Also, the Chemistry is not there at all. In fact, Rutleldge, Ferrara and Fouste are BOOOOORRRRRING!. Rutledge is obnoxious and whiny at best. I’d Ferrara not to quit his dayjob, but he’s not even funny so that won’t work for him either. The only reason I wont say anything bad about Fouste is because I’m a fan of his as a drifter.
The Jokes are lame, the show is uninventive and they don’t even have that dry British humor that is unbeatable. This show is a epic FAIL. Very disappointing in deed.

What a load of crap, did the hosts even get interviewed for the position? They all need to go, just wipe the slate clean and try again. The producers need to put their heads together and come up with some of their own ideas and stop trying to make the show like the BBCs.

I can not believe how bad Top Gear America is. Seems they are trying to not only copy the Top Gear format but actually copy the Top Gear Skits and even the Top Gear jokes. I guess they think there are enough Americans out there that have not seen or hear of TG that they will find all this fresh and entertaining. The people attracted to this show would be mostly those familiar with the British version and find it ridiculous.
I personally could not even give it a full episode and I watch re-runs of Top Gear (BBC) all the time.

I like Top Gear America.
I LOVE Top Gear UK!
The camera angles, challenges, track times, and cars are all just as good as Top Gear UK.
However, Rutlidge, Tanner and the Jersey Boy just can’t touch the Brit’s in regard to commentary. It’s almost like the US version doesn’t have any decent writers, because we all know Jezza, Hamster, and Capti’n Slow don’t write their own material – right?
For those of us who just cannot get enough Top Gear, the US version is more of a good thing.
Heck, I’m thinking about learning German so I can watch (and understand Sebina Schmitt in Top Gear Germany!).
Here is a suggestion, mow the grass on the Top Gear US track, and paint some lines on the course. Put a little effort into it – eh?
Request for vehicles: A few seasons ago Clarkson did a Range Rover challenge to a UK tank ( and lost of course).
How about getting an AEV Hemi Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited and challenging the M1A1 Abrahms tank to a similar challenge?
Doing the $1000 beaters is easy, let’s see some Amazon to Pacific or North Pole excursions! The bar has been set high, and you knew what you were signing on for when you took this on…
Man up and deliver the goods.
