Adam Ferrara: ‘I’d like to drive the Popemobile’

Adam Ferrara is a renowned petrolhead who ranks the Zonda F Roadster as his top car. He’s also a stand-up comedian and stars in firefighting drama series Rescue Me.

What’s in your garage?
A first-generation Lexus LS400.

What’s the fastest you’ve ever driven?
180mph in a Gallardo.

Who or what caused your worst car crash?
A suicidal deer who chose death by Ford.

What’s your dream car?
I would like to drive the Popemobile with the Pope in it. There are a few things I need to go over with him.

What was the first car you owned?
A 1981 hand-me-down Dodge Aries K SE. It was white with red pin striping and red velour seats. Apparently, grandpa was a pimp.

What car do you hate most in all the world?
The one that’s in front of me doing 50mph in the outside lane

Are US cars better than European cars?
I haven’t driven a lot of European cars, but Europe seems to get cooler stuff.

Why film an American version of Top Gear?
There’s no other way I would get to drive all these kick-ass super cars.

How is Top Gear US going to be different to the UK version?
We will be driving on the other side of the road.

What’s your favourite thing that Top Gear has ever done?
So many to chose from… James in the flying caravan, motorbikes through Vietnam, but most of all deciding to launch an American version.

Who’s your favourite presenter from the three guys in the UK?
The synergy of the three is really what makes the show for me.

What will be your definition of success for Top Gear US?
If we can come close to capturing the spirit of adventure, fun and camaraderie of the UK version without any of us dying in a massive fireball.

The American version of Top Gear is on History in the US this autumn

I disagree. The History channel has branched out way past simple documentaries. The history channel already has a big dose of reality, and entertainment based shows. TopGear style shows could succeed on SPEED but at the same time, people that watch SPEED are possibly TOO interested in cars to enjoy TG., or at least take cars too seriously. TG is as much about joking around, entertainment, and humor as it is cars. Hardcore gearheads are as likely to argue with TG as enjoy it.

When TLC went and turned itself into virtually “The Ladies Channel” History pretty countered by becoming “The Man’s Channel”. Once TLC went babies, makeovers and decorating, History countered with war, vikings, and now, awesome cars.

All US shows DO NOT “dumb themselves down” especially not History. Its not like this show is slated for CBS or soemthing.

I was in the audience the other day when they were recording, and all i have to say it that it seems Tanner loves him some chap stick! Adam come on, he’s askin for you to crack on him for it during the show, whats taking so long?!? He dresses like a pretty boy and can’t get enough chap stick, Do us all a favor and poke some fun at him nationally. It’s like Richard Hammond and his “pretty” teeth. I say you personnaly assign yourself the role of Jeremy Clarkson and dish out some, i mean come on, did you see that blue shirt he was wearing? Iswear Hammond has that same one in green.

Good luck guys, seriously. You have to give them credit. Jay Leno apparently said he didn’t want to do even try to host an American Top Gear and I’m sure these guys know they are walking into a hornets nest. They have huge bollocks and deserve a chance.

However I think it would’ve been hilarious to stick Zach Galifianakis in some supercars.

First of all, as someone who watches TG religiously, there is no way in hell american tv could ever come close to even reproduce the same feel of the show. original TG is and always will be unique, and for starters there’s no Stig, even though he does have an american cousin. And the channel that picked it up is highly supect. I’ve watched NASCAR with the chubby one and he’s not really a race analist per say, but rather a fan analyst, or something. But he looks like he would provide at least some comedy relief, i guess. Tanner Foust, being the skilled driver he is, really doesn’t have the personality to really keep an audience engaged, and i really haven”t seen that other guy much. Haven’t seen his show, but it looks like he might have at least some sense of humor to bring to the table.

Don’t get me wrong i will at least give the show a chance, but they have some staggeringly preposterous big shoes to fill. And another thing that makes TG cool are the guests, even though i don’t know half of them being on the other side of the pond and all, but will the US version have that??

TheSolly, many cable systems in the US don’t carry BBC America. So for a large portion of the country, there’s no way to see Top Gear other than ten minute segments on YouTube. Also, there’s many that will not watch British programming because it’s British. They feel it’s “too foreign”. A lot of the references are lost on them.

As for the History Channel, they’ve been branching out and trying new programming. It might not seem like an obvious fit, but they are willing to take a chance on a new program like this.

My first car was a 1981 Dodge Aries K… wagon with the 4 on the floor! Handed down to me from my dad. It was brown with roof luggage racks, sounded like a washing machine, and when the engine finally blew my dad loved me so much he bought me a blue one just like it. And surprisingly enough I still had dates in high school. Good times…
