Top Gear USA – the premiere weekend

Well, the tables are truly turned. This Sunday night after dinner, everyone in Britain is going to be tuning into something vaguely disappointing on TV, possibly involving period costume. Something, basically, that isn’t Top Gear.

While over in America, all you millions that are usually hunched nefariously over laptops waiting for your Top Gear fix on a Sunday evening can kick back on your “recliner”, fiddle with your “Tivo”, put the “chips” in a bowl and crack open a tin of what you like to claim is “beer” (we’ll have to disagree with you on that one).

Yes – here’s your final reminder that Top Gear USA debuts this Sunday 21 November on the History Channel at 10/9c (we’re assured this is a legitimate way to print the time). We hope you enjoy it.

While you’re waiting, you can read this week’s interview with the three presenters, watch an out-take or two, or see what happened when 60 Minutes came to visit Top Gear earlier this year.

And as usual on TopGear.com – but for the first time from America – let us know your thoughts below.

What do you think?

I am sorry, but as an American, our version is crap. It lacks the chemistry needed from the presenters. Furthermore, we Americans enjoy elements of cars that our English (and European) brothers don’t, such as big trucks, fast quarter miles, and NASCAR, but when you get three presenters that are dull, you embarrass American gearheads. I know, we lack the sophistication of European “petrol-heads,” but we make up for it with a deep devotion to power and torque. It is sad when Clarkson better represents this notion than our so called representatives on American Top Gear. They can’t do it, so turn it off. I’ll take Clarkson’s critique of the American notion of cars any day over our version of Top Gear!

How come these guys are not as funny as the original UK and Aussie lads?

4th episode was looking better i think the TG USA has a chance but the presenters have to be more comfortable in front of the camera and more Honest about there opinions of the cars they review . The show does seem a bit forced at the moment but i feel it has a chance . We will see., nothing will beat TG U.K i so hope the USA show gets better keeping my fingers crossed

Well, thinking about a show called the office, I suppose we could back off a bit and let it become its own.. Not a fan of ripping of the phony lame late season UK version.. wish they ripped off a little older version when it was a bit more real.. Seems like that is the feel of american cars.. not always polished, but a guaranteed show.. and throw in a new vette and some drifts to quiet the brit version whiners..

I’ve watched every episode there is of Top Gear on BBC.
It never once failed to be enjoyable.

I watched the first three episodes of American Top Gear, I gave them a fair chance.
Not once did I even crack a smile. It was the worst thing I have ever watched. Those three Americans try too hard to be Jeremy, Richard and James.

Where is the originality in copying all of the challenges in every single detail?

It didn’t even hold a candle to BBC Top Gear. I LOVE some BBC Top Gear but the American Version was a HUGE dissapointment. The 3 hosts they picked were total idiots. They incorporated way too much silly. The new USA Top Gear (The Car Show) that debuted 7/13/2011 Sucked too. The host is a D list comedian whose voice is so grating you would rather carve your own eyes out with rusty forks. Also, they put WAY too testosterone into it. I mean it is a car show, it should have SOME however it should be a little more well mannered. The other 3 guys were pretty decent. The guy who drives the Rolls Royce in the pilot episode would have been a way better choice for a host. Even better, they could have just picked 3 average random car guys who know enough… but not too much. They need people who all of us can relate to. That is what makes the BBC Top Gear rock. They are car guys that are funny, but they aren’t comedians and you can see they all genuinely like cars but with a healthy balance of reality.
