As Britain continues to disappear under what appears to be a massive Britain-shaped iceberg lowered from the sky with unerring accuracy, we’ve been eyeing the balmy footage from California-based Top Gear USA with some envy this week.
For episode five, Tanner, Adam and Rutledge head to Detroit to choose their favorite old GM cars and put them through a series of challenges to decide which one should be brought back into production. The choice? The Buick Roadmaster, the Pontiac Fiero, or Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme…
Elsewhere skateboard legend and game designer Tony Hawk gets on the Top Gear test track, and there’s our favourite “news” segment of the series so far.
Enjoy, America-based TopGear.commers – remember, it’s on as usual this Sunday evening on the History Channel at 10/9c. You can also catch up with old episodes and out-takes right here on the History Channel site (if you’re American). Let us know what you think as always.

TG USA is a pathetic replica of TG UK. Regardless of whose fault it is, it is simply terrible, being little more than 44 minutes of robots reciting memorized stats.

This could be the best TG US so far, but only if your into muscle cars. I won’t be seeing it but I reckon the Cutlass has the best chances of winning.

I accidentally turned this on thinking it was TG UK – I lasted exactly 3 seconds before I became nauseous and had to turn it off. It’s far worse than I ever imagined.

*eyeroll*
Well, TGUS haters, your options are TGUS or nowt. Zip. Nothing. We don’t pay the taxes that goes into producing the BBC-produced TGUK, so, we’re not going to get TGUK first-run here in the states. This is what you’ve got, so you perhaps y’all might think about cooling the trashing? How about some constructive crits?
It was very likely decided that the fees to the Beeb to get the UK show here were going to cost more than titanium for the average US cable subscriber, and so they decided it would be cheaper to just do their own — with the Beeb’s production help and writing.
I don’t think the show is a miserable failure, I think it’s trying to find it’s footing and the guys are just sorting-out how to do this. Adam and Wood are great and Tanner just needs to relax. So far, each episode is better than the first, and it’s using a narrative that has currency with a US audience: the American automotive experience. I didn’t have an AC or a MG or an old Rover as a kid. I don’t drive A roads. I live in the US with big highways, open spaces and point-and-squirt muscle cars. Case in point: I had a Firebird with a huge V8 and more power than reason as a kid. This show is aimed directly at that experience.
If the powers that be renew the show for season 2, and I hope they will because there is no alternative, this show will get better. TGUK sucked too, remember?

So tired of watching repeat scenarios played out poorly by these noobs. It is seriously painful to watch. If BBC just wants to regurgitate UK scenarios onto US audience it’s a critical, fatal flaw to NOT realize that a majority of TGUS watchers are rabid fans of TGUK. I believe I have seen the last TGUS (had to turn off before end of show — just awful). I am impatiently for TPUK to resume airing here.

During these hard economic times we all need a little humor. Please make me laugh a few times. You idiots get one more chance and thats it. How hard can it be to find three mildly interessting, slightly funny hosts? I guess TGUS has answered that for me, impossible. I just cant imagine they need to be loyal to these guys at the expense of what could be a great show.

No point in trying to watch the US version, the UK version already did it all and did it way better. My son came from England to spend the holidays here in NY so we thought we would watch the American version together, we made it through the first 4 minutes before it was just too embarrassing to watch any more. The sooner this show gets dropped the better.

I say that Top Gear UK, Australia, America and Russia should come together and do a Top Gear World Challenge!!! All in favor, say “AYE”.

I caught the fist segment of the episode about the used car salesment. Now I know why this American version of Top Gear stinks. I shut it off after 15 minutes. Just awful.

Not, it’s not as good as the original. But folks, it’s really not bad. Sometimes quite good. And a knock-off Top Gear is still better than 98% of what’s on TV…

Pretty sure it’s Eric Clapton it used to be played a lot on Radio Northsea International around 1973. Don’t know the name of it.
