Hello again. So, we’re past the halfway mark in series 16 – we hope you’re enjoying it so far. And after such a quiet, uneventful week in the Top Gear office, we’ve managed to pack plenty into this Sunday’s show.
First up, Jeremy pays tribute to Pagani’s venerable supercar with a rather rapid test of its final (or is it?) iteration: the lunatic Zonda R. Prepare for lots of joyous shouting, this time made utterly necessary by a roaring AMG V12 inches from his head.
All three presenters then embark on their latest consumer test: examining the many pitfalls when purchasing a cheap second-hand convertible. We won’t spoil it for you, but as Jeremy promised in our video last week, Richard does, unfortunately, have rather an uncomfortable time of it.
We’ve also got a rather special new British car in the studio, a news segment dealing with the thorny issue of avian superstition in motoring, and Simon Pegg, along with best mate Nick Frost, returns to our track to rag the Reasonably Priced Car.
We’re on at our usual time of 8pm on BBC2 as always, and we’ll have your usual post-show discussion and outtakes after the show on TopGear.com.
To get you in the mood, here’s another glimpse behind the scenes at last week’s episode as Jonathan Ross finally manages to complete a decent lap in the C-apostrophe-D. Features the briefest cameo in televisual history from Jeremy…

What do you think?

I have to agree, in spirit with Mr. Ross. The show has lost a bit of its “cool” factor, especially for Americans. We`re really tired of the guys just trotting out the latest incarnation of European supercars and performing the same, mindless stunts, week in and week out.
In terms of popularity, and on the “turn my stomach” meter, Clarkson falls somewhere between Simon Cowell at the high end of the meter and Gordon Ramsey at about 3/4 up the scale. Hammond is cuter than a bugs ear and rarely seems to get any credit for being the real “gear-head”. James is the intellectual, though, you might miss it while he is busy being Curly to Clarkson`s obnoxious Moe.
The American version is so bad that this is the only mention I will give to it. But, Clarkson`s characterization of everything American as being rubbish is just plain rude. In the future, Mr “World`s Greatest Authority” might want to keep the following in mind: July 4, 1776 and the fact that the fall of the British Empire started on that date.
We Americans might talk funny and have long since forgotten the mother tongue, but, thanks to us crude, ignorant savages who drive around in crap cars on crap roads. Drink coffee instead of tea. Drink our beer cold and leave the crust on our sandwiches, Brits get to speak the “Queen`s English” instead of German.
Mr Clarkson, in particular may want to consider being just a smidgen more polite to America and Americans. It is getting harder and harder to take seriously someonoe who has to cheat at every competition. Bring back the better show of 3 or 4 years ago.
As for British cars, An American`s opinion based on observation, stats, and experience: Jaguars overheat too easily…Rolls and Bentley (actually German, now)are made for only 1% of the population….the biggest sellers are made by an American company (Ford) and a German company (Opel, partnered with GM)…MG is gone (and was like driving a brick)…Mini is now a BMW. It would seem that, just like America, the Japanese have taken over.
Like the British Empire, the sun appears to have set on British autos.

@dlw1053:
Of course they’re going to rip on us! The biggest player on the block is always going to be a target and, much as it makes me cringe, most of their US jabs are pretty much spot on. We are arrogant, we do make crap cars (or at least nothing I’d care to drive), and we can be very backward (especially socially).
And it’s not like all the coverage is all bad, although it would be nice (and more accurate) if some of the world’s problems weren’t all laid at our door.

i think top gear hasnt been as good since season 13 its gotten to predictable and scripted i wish it was them and what they had to say sometimes, i do still think its by faar the best show on tv and i watch every episode as soon as i can since i live in america and we get the shitty edited episodes on bbc america so i have to watch it on the internet, they still make me laugh and put a smile on my face and i dont even wanna think about the show ending or i might get depressed i love this show you cant end it, the news is still my favorite because you can see all three of them interact and insult eachother, they still make great episodes like the bolivia special and some others, jeremy james and richard i love you please dont retire love the show keep up the good work

To Anonymous: Some of top gears best episodes were after series 13 like the Bolivia special and the electric car challenge when they built their own electric car but series fifteen might have been a let down

Slightly off topic, but Nick Dalton (production team chap at the start of the J Ross clip) is very pleasing eye candy! More of him, please, TG powers-that-be! : )

It is amazing that the presenters place themselves in harms way during the last new episode in Iraq. How many security guys were nearby? Desert trip unique–how is Mr. May? My wife fell off of a bridge in Costa Rica and I remember the loss of memory and such. Did he suffer any consequences?
Keep up the great show!

I’d love to make a current comment, but all we Canadian colonials get are constant repeats from recent seasons past, over and over again, interspersed with the occasional slip up called a season 16 episode. (Ford Fiesta storms the beach after a short “haul in the mall” with a Vette? Did light up my subs nicely though.) Maybe it’s a “lost in translation thing” with the “French Factor” here. I don’t mean the translation deal, but the time it takes to edit out their constant whining about being constantly “dissed” on Top Gear by three constantly priggish limeys. But whatever, its wearing a bit thin and I’m your greatest fan: except for all your others. In the mean time, I’ve heard that “Captain Slow” got go … could you “Veronfy” that for me?

Dear dlw1053
It would interest you to note that the British Empire reached its peak size at the end of World War I, long after 3 September 1783 (the signing of the Treaty of Paris, and the official end of the British claim to the Thirteen Colonies, a date *you* would do well to remember).
It would also interest you to note that British repelled Germany’s attempt at invasion in 1940, and that the Blitz ended in early 1941, long before the entry of the United States into World War II.
I would really like to see a challenge match between Top Gear UK and Top Gear US. I am quite certain that it would end with a race between “James” and an equally Stig-replaced “Adam”.

Ah, you have to love the hypocrites who are too stupid to realize when they dig their own hole.
Another viewer who is perfectly happy to accept insults at every other city, town or country but the moment the attention is directed at them it isn’t that funny. If you’ve sat back and laughed at the ridicule poured on other people then you are in no place to criticize the show. You are the very audience that perpetuates the sarcasm and barbs that you so frequently laugh at yet are unable to do so when it’s at your expense.
You can’t have it both ways. Either you are offended by all the disparaging comments or you are not. Pick a side and try and stick with it. I know that might be difficult, but see if you can hold a thought for more than five minutes.
It’s also funny how whenever an American brings up the subject of the Revolutionary War as some kind of indicator of global supremacy, they always neglect to mention that without the significant naval and military assistance of the French and it’s soldiers the outcome might have been much different. You know, the country you are always making fun of? If you are one of the few Americans who has a passport and has ever ventured outside to learn about the rest of the world, the first time you are in Europe maybe you should stop by Paris and thank them for the help.
You can also check how small America’s world has become too. It’s position of dominance is shrinking as surely as every other superpower like Britain did. Your time is coming to a close too, as China exerts it’s influence over the globe.
