This week in the Top Gear office, Jeremy has been repeatedly singing ‘Daniel’ by Elton John, James has developed an excellent theory about the 1980s band Wang Chung, and Richard has made a feeble attempt to apologise for a smell he made in James’s car which reportedly left it ‘unusable’.
Some of this may become clear on Sunday night, although in many ways it would be better if most of it remained within the confines of the TG Portakabin.
There are, however, certain things that will definitely feature in this week’s programme. One of them is a test of the BMW M3 Competition Pack and the Audi RS5 as Jeremy wonders whether either can improve on the much-loved normal M3.
Another of them is a cunning idea to keep Britain moving when it snows whilst at the same time making use of that laziest of farm implements, the combine harvester. If you think about it, combines only work in August then sit in a shed for the rest of the year. Meanwhile, Britain’s cash-strapped councils are loathe to spend more money on snow ploughs when we might not need them for another five years. The solution is the Top Gear Snowbine Harvester and you will feel its majesty on Sunday evening. Probably.
Finally, we’ve got Hollywood actress Amber Heard in the Reasonably Priced Car. You’re right; most people’s first reaction is ‘Amber who?’ But as you’ll discover in the show, she does have quite a few things going for her.
And that’s the gist of show 5. Don’t forget to come back to this very website after the show for behind-the-scenes video and other moderately interesting things.

What do you think?

Jezza make your mind up. It’s not that long ago that you said the RS4 was better than the M3. (when you raced the climbers)

Why are you driving the M3 Competition when the M3 GTS exists? Come on guys, keep up with the rest of us.
That said, the Snowbine Plowvester was almost as epically awesome as that lovely Amber lady. Too bad that love of cars didn’t translate into a better lap (the hammerhead and the last couple of corners killed it IMO). I guess classic muscle cars don’t prepare her for corners very well…

When Jeremy reviewed the RS4 and said it was better than the M3, he was comparing it to the old E46 M3. The new M3, the E90 series, had not come out yet. Since the new model has been out, he has pretty much changed his tune on which car he thinks is beer.

Saw Amber on TV – what a phony! Austin is like Berkeley, California, home of University of Texas and Whole Foods HQ – Very laid back and very open. It’s definitely not square dancing and dudes carrying guns.
As to books, I don’t know where Amber went to school, but my kids in Texas are reading George Orwell.
Texas is modern and has very sophisticated arts and literature. Yes, it is conservative in its rural parts, but let’s face it, it is a big place!

As WholesomeJen pointed out the RS4 review was before the E90 M3 had come out. The Audi RS4 and M3 models are out of sync and can’t really be compared.
However the RS5 vs M3 is a fair comparison as the M3 does come in saloon and coupe forms.
When Audi bring out their next RS4 (possibly not this generation) it will almost certainly feature a version of the new 4.0 TFSI turbo V8 engine as featured in the new S7 (and C7 S6).
This will probably match up well with whatever BMW stick in the next M3, although that again won’t be appearing any time soon.
I think the review of the RS5 missed a trick in that the M3 might still be faster than Audi’s latest on a track, but in the real world a much less skilled driver will be able to drive the Audi quicker in wet and dry conditions (even if the stability control is really what’s guiding the car round the corners).
They’re two very similar and yet distinctly different cars and the review really failed to look at that. I would have liked to know for example what’s changed inside from the transition from S5 to RS5. My friend’s S5 is very nice overall inside although a couple of niggles like creaking door handles and loose aluminium trim spoil the feeling of build quality in an otherwise very lovely interior. Is the RS5 any different?
One thing that suprised me was that even with the addition of a new rear diff the RS5 understeered on track like crazy (reminiscent of the RS4 vs M3 vs E63 test in Spain). Having been for many a spirited drive in my friend’s S5 this was suprising as that car didn’t feel as if it was understeering badly at any point.
I guess it shows the massive difference though between a spirited drive with electronics on keeping the car’s path in check vs full traction control off and on track antics at the absolute limits.
Most drivers on the road will never ever push the car that far so the fact the review focussed almost entirely on track performance kind of defeated the point!
On an entirely different note, I agree with several of the posts complaining about the more scripted nature of the past few seasons. It’s not that we don’t know it’s all scripted from day one anyway, but the episodes I remember as being some of the best have also been some of the simplest.
Coupes/porsches/whatever for under £1000 and boat cars all entertained me more than the combine harvester with flame thrower pretending to set people on fire. I bet they cost a whole bunch less too…

I don’t give a damn where Amber Heard is from or which way she swings exually: she is f*****g GORGEOUS! I couldn’t give a toss whether she’s a good actress, pays for sex or has three tits… I am shallow enough to be dazzled by a fit body and a pretty face.
The Dominator Snowbine Harvester was brilliant. The boys, for a change, could well have hit on something useful there – if anybody has the balls to take a serious look at it. I fear, though, that it will die an unceremonious death…
I had hoped that the ‘Mexican Incident’ has gone west, but obviously not. Still another hot-headed encillada-eating numpty to stir the whole thing up again. Don’t these people ever give up?

Hey…
I think you should take up 1 pretty important thing in top gear..
It’s about that Bloodhound Supersonic and they say it’s the fastest “CAR” in the world, but if to make it clear then car should always move forward with the power of wheels and not a jet engine.. So Bloodhound Supersonic is NOT a car. It’s a JET on wheels.. It’s the same that to take a JET and never lift and just roll (FLY) on land. Bloodhound Supersonic is a BULLSHIT speed record “car”. Car should move forward thanks to a engine that gives power to wheels and not a jet that just pushes a body of a car forward without wheels doing any job at all.

It is about the Bloodhound SSC. I agree with you there Argo. They call it the fastest “car” in the world but it is not because all it is, is effectively a rocket with a cockpit and two more rockets on the side. Like you said the Bloodhound SSC isn`t a car at all. A car is where you have a chassis, engine, doors and the rest of it. I don`t know how they class it as a car because you have to get in by being lifted in through the cockpit roof because it can`t have doors otherwise it would lose its aerodynamic ability to rocket at that speed!

Forget the combine snowplow – they already had the answer earlier and the show and mocked it.
Send over a thousand or so F150′s with plow attachments and you can clean up those country roads in no time. There’s a reason it’s fords #1 seller. In the summer our landscaper uses one to haul his lawn mowing gear in the winter on comes to plow blade to plow out driveways.
