So apparently some people race model trains. For fun. And to nobody at Top Gear’s surprise, this has piqued our James’ interest…
Alongside occasional wingman and wine extremist Oz Clarke, Slow has decided to challenge a trio of Hamburg-based miniature railway enthusiasts to a nine-mile race this Saturday April 16 (it’s for yet another piece of moonlighting, this time presenting James May’s Toy Stories).
He’s up against some stern competition: the Germans own Miniatur Wunderland, the world’s biggest model railway exhibition. That said, May’s no Johnny-Come-Lately: on Toy Stories in 2009 he tried to run two models along the race/train track, which falls between Bideford and Barnstaple stations in Devon. Alas, our man was scuppered by those twin British evils: bad weather and vandalism.
We can’t promise it’ll be as entertaining as Top Gear’s other train-based endeavour, but it might be fun to watch him getting trounced by Germans. Spectators are welcome – be at either station from 7am.
