No slouches, these Top Gear US presenters. While our lot use the downtime between series to do things like race model trains in sleepy Devon villages, Tanner Foust is busily filling in his spare time competing in various Rallycross events. And doing rather well.
Last week he overcame a dislocated shoulder to take first place in round two of the Global Rallycross series in Washington, and this Bank Holiday he popped over to our neck of the woods – Lydden Hill – for the opening round of the European Rallycross series.
Unfortunately, his rather mental 600bhp Ford Fiesta (quicker 0-60 than a Grand Prix car) struggled on the second day, and he had to settle for eighth. Still, we’d hazard a guess that’s better than we’d have done.
Rowan Horncastle braved the heat to grab a quick chat with our man to see how filming is going for Top Gear US’ second series (it’s out later this year on the History Channel).
So are you enjoying Top Gear US so far?
Top Gear US was a lot of fun. My highlights had to be Alaska looking for America’s best pick-up truck, as I thought at some points we were close to dying. But all the challenges are incredible on Top Gear and what you see is real. I also loved racing the parachutists in the Ford F150 Raptor, and when do you get to race a skier down a mountain in a car, apart from on Top Gear?
Pleased with the reaction to it all?
It is hard as there have been Top Gear spin-offs in other countries and people think you are always trying to emulate the UK show. There was a sense of pressure initially because the guys over here do it so well. Jeremy, Hammond and May are awesome; they have been doing it a long time and have a really good dynamic. But the format of Top Gear has evolved over time and works really well all around the world. Although the format is the same as the UK show, the three of us on Top Gear USA are different. We put our own spin on Top Gear to make sure it works in our culture. As the season went on we really gelled and got a lot better at doing it.
And what do you think of our three presenters in the UK?
In one word? Jeremy: extreme. James: not extreme. Hammond: wicked. He is the short one so I think we have something in common – but he is shorter than me.
The second series is coming later this year, right?
Series two? It’s crazy. I can’t tell you too much but I can say that the directors and producers are trying their best to kill three presenters in cars while all sniggering behind the cameras. As for challenges – I can’t tell you anything. But we have been in a swamp.
Oh, and if you haven’t encountered Rallycross before, this is it:

Good interview, is there anywhere aside YouTube where we can see footage of the US show?

Didn’t like the US version at first, but it has slowly grown on me. The Alaskan truck adventure was on par with some of the UK challenges. You can watch some videos of the show on the History Channel’s website.

Top Gear US is slowly getting better. However, it will never be as good as UK. James, Richard and Jeremy’s chemistry is unrivalled. It’s not just a car show, after all.
Tanner is by far the best driver of all the TG presenters. He’s learned a lot getting his butt kicked by Paul Tracy, on Battle of the Supercars!! Paul is very Stig-like.

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. A race where everyone drives the exact same car–and a Ford at that? Sure, the drivers get to show off, but what the hell does that matter?

@MetalGuru33. Same make racing means the driver has to use skill to win and not rely on big budgets and the best mechanics. Why is being a good driver dumb. To be honest that was a dumb comment.

I’m glad to hear from Tanner on the chemistry of the hosts: at first the awkwardness was evident and the show started slow. The basic UK formula works well in the US and once they jumped an old Coupe Deville and bent the frame, I was hooked! I could use a little less of the contrived shtick between the hosts to build their characters. The reason TG works is you get a sense of Clarkson, Hammond and May being basically who they are and not a total act. Rutledge, lose the flannels already! Adam, try not say the same five lines to open, close and intro every segment on every episode. One last thing: your track sucks or at least how you show the track sucks, it might as well be a mall parking lot with some cones. Not bad, but hoping for for a better 2nd series.

Please stop pandering for the US version. It is BAD. They are unwatchable and unoriginal. I would rather do with out it, then ever watch the 6 minutes I can sit through, before I have to change the channel.

I like the US version. It isn’t anywhere near as good as proper UK Top Gear, but it’s ok. But if you look back to 2002 when the current UK Top Gear started, it’s a pretty good start for US Top Gear. They have more to compare to and try and copy, but still. I thought I would hate it (and I’m American), but I don’t I also like how they test more American cars and put them around the track like the Dodge Viper ACR especially. UK Top Gear have never even tested one, but I know for sure it would be near the top of the Power Lap Board. Fast on US Top Gear track, fast on Laguna Seca, fast on the ‘Ring, etc.

It’ll get better over time. Nobody really but Americans will like it because the Europeans are a bunch of fanboys and haters to the US, but who cares. They can all sit in a corner as angry little boys while we enjoy both versions. Aussie Top Gear probably isn’t even bad either, people just trolling.

I only started watching TG when I got the BBC channel here five years ago. I wish I could have followed the shows progression from the beginning, I probably missed quite a few epic episodes.
I Love TG USA also. It took a couple of shows to get used to the 3 new hosts but by the 3rd episode they seemed much more comfortable working together… they were fun to watch. And at least, with the US version, I can watch it progress from the beginning.
ps. Only one lap around the track is not enough to determine if a car did a good enough time… they should consider doing 3 laps and take the best time.
Also, I’d Like to see the UK Stig Race the USA Stig with similar cars.

so far the other T.G. shows can’t really compete with the original.but i’m sure they will get better with time.i actually seen the U.S. version first and was kind of bored. then i seen the U.K. series and became an instant addict of the show.i have had a love for cars all my life.thank you for putting something on the “telle” worth watching.

The photo lead for this blog is a shot of an really understeering pig, or did Tanner just miss the line? As far as watching “spec” racing, ala “Daytona Prototypes,” they are as boring as spec racing at NASCAR. I’ll take the ALM or LeMans categories any day over the cookie cutter nonsense. It’s my money, and I don’t spend it at the Rolex 24 any more, even though I’ve been going since 1970. Got to see Rodriguez and Donohue in the 917 and the 512, and a myriad of greats driving everything from BMW sedans to Andretti and Ickx in the Ferraris. Sebring, pain in the butt it is, is far better and lots more fun to watch than the current pablum of the Rolex series… See you at Road Atlanta for the Petite LeMans in October. NASCAR? Nope, sorry.

It would do well for the US TopGear lads to behave this time & realize that their fellow presentors are there. It is not nessesary for all three to appear in every single shot. We in the audience are not three years olf, we are aware that they continue to exsist even if we do not see them.
As to Mr.Ferrara’s concern, of last year; The English have so many clever ways to swear/comment, because during their school years they foster a vocabulary that does NOT include ‘dude’ nor use ‘like’ as a conjunctive verb–

Us top gear is interesting although most challenges are directly from the british version, which is disapointing.(allthough I would love to see the Us version do a hilux type thing to various vehichles) oh don’t tell your hosts this but the ford fiesta is unsurprisingly made in mexico…………………………………………

At first I hated the US TG, with exception to Tanner’s involvement. I felt they should have tried to emulate the original UK version as much as possible, it would have helped the chemistry early on. I have been a die hard TG fan ever since it was airing on Discovery channel here in the US (ages ago…), and the disappointment of what the US version gave us was well expected in my eyes, because nothing will ever be better than the original. Adam is the worst (cant even drive stick! and you host TG?!?!), and rutledge is pretty bad too. The show did get better as the season went on however, and I am looking forward to season 2. PLEASE send them out of the US on a special road trip!

Top Gear UK = 5/5
Top Gear US = 3.5/5 (SLOWLY getting better)
Top Gear Aussie = 3/5 (not being shown for a season or so did them in)
Top Gear Russia = .0001/5 (Was this a joke?)
Top Gear China (in works) = 0/5 (not worth a comment)
Getting tired of Clarkson doing his stupid once a year DVD. If you pay attention, 80% of the cars he drives on the DVD is on most of the next seasons Top Gear episodes. Who wants to see the same car shown and opinions twice?
If you pay attention as well, he pretty much takes half his lines from the DVD, to the upcoming TG episodes. You can tell they are cutting corners and running out of “decent” ideas… (mainly the last 2 dvd’s and TG seasons)
It’s kinda sad to be honest, I’m a loyal TG UK fan but I think TG UK is starting to lose it’s pizazz.
Snap to it TG/Clarkson!
