Richard and the big red truck in series 17 So here we are again, just two sleeps away from the brand new series of Top Gear and, frankly, that’s a bit of a miracle. We thought, you see, that the show wouldn’t be back on air for quite a while. And we thought that was great news. We’d have plenty of time to film lots of new things before editing them together at our leisure. Then the BBC scheduling department rang and told us we were due back in June. You know that school time sinking feeling when you haven’t done your homework? It was like that.

Still, Top Gear is nothing if not resourceful so we had a couple of meetings, wrote a lot of barely comprehensible lists on white boards, and then we damn well went out and filmed enough for this first show. All things considered, we’re quite pleased with the way it’s turned out. But rather than tell you what’s in the show this Sunday, I’m going to hand you over to a rainy video presentation from our hairy and shambolic leader, Andy Wilman. You see that bin he’s leaning on? That’s where he gets all his clothes from.

The first episode of the new series of Top Gear is in our usual slot this weekend: Sunday, 8pm, BBC2 and BBC HD. And we’ll have some behind-the-scenes video for you all straight after the show on TopGear.com as usual…

Over the past couple of series’ I have been critical of the show, how everything was over the top, or scripted or just plain unfunny. But now after that episode I believe the real Top Gear is back. It was funny where it needed to be, but most of all, it was ALL about cars. I absolutely loved the E-Type segment. It nearly brought a tear to my eye. Continue like this for the rest of the series and I believe Top Gear will properly be back to its best. One of the best episodes of Top Gear I have ever seen. It’s up there with the Ayrton Senna episode and the specials, well done. Keep it up! Thanks.
