Don’t forget all – Top Gear USA is back on UK screens with another double bill: this Friday, BBC Three, 7pm.

In the first episode, in celebration of America’s love of all things tough, the boys from across the pond attempt to crown the baddest heavy-duty pickup sold stateside, Tanner races a boat in the tough-looking Local Motors Rally Fighter and the tough-to-spell-his-last-name comedian Bill Engvall is the Big Star in a Small Car.

The best-selling vehicle in the United States is a Ford pickup, as it has been for the last 28 years. Trucks are as ‘Merican as Twinkie Pie and the citizenry’s relationship with them isn’t platonic – Americans love their pick-me-ups, and the ones they love the most are the biggest, baddest, longest, widest, heaviest, most chrome-addled Texas Cadillacs with the most leather and absolute worst fuel economy possible. Rutledge, Adam and Tanner each select their favorite 4X4 heavy-duty diesel offering from Chevrolet, Ram and Ford and head towards the high desert. These trucks have 2,215lb ft of torque among them, something like the energy potential of a small nuclear device. A number that big that requires big tests, big things to pull on and big lapses in judgment.

Tanner Foust gets his hands on the internet-designed Local Motors Rally Fighter and takes it deep into the swamps of Louisiana to find a location suitably inhospitable – and a machine wild enough – to challenge this truck-car-thing’s off-road prowess. If standing water, muck, and crocodiles weren’t enough, Tanner lines the Rally Fighter up against a boat powered by a very large and supercharged V8 that doesn’t seem to care much whether there’s water under it or not.

And in the follow-up, Adam, Rutledge and Tanner engage a different set of four-wheel drive transfer cases when they set out to find the best 4×4 five-thousand bucks will buy.

Rutledge scrounges up a Navy-tough Chevy Blazer, Adam a more modern and OJ Simpson-approved Ford Bronco and Tanner a trail-rated but very carburated Jeep CJ-7. The reputations of these 4x4s were forged on battlefields, desert racecourses and the toughest off-road trails found stateside. A tour through a state park should be a breeze then, right?

Death Valley holds a special and terrifying place for any person who has attempted to cross it in any vehicle without perfect reliability, robust build quality or air conditioning. Show up lacking any one of those three things and at best you will exit, if you exit, looking like beef jerky. What better place, then, to begin an epic journey in weathered vehicles that will wind through the mountains, dunes and rock-strewn trails of the Mojave desert en route to glitzy and glamourless Las Vegas.

What do you think?

I love Top Gear USA because it show cool clips of your amazing country….what scenery and all your amazing trucks …. which, quite frankly are a million times better than anything we`ve got in the UK.

Is the 2nd season going to be repeated again on History or BBC3, because I missed it and I`m gutted…

You might try:1) repairing permissionsif that doesn’t hep2) boot into safe mode (hold the Shift key after the chime and until you see the spinning wheel)if that doesn’t help3) download the 10.4.7 Combo updater for your system and install it.This is pretty generic advice, but again, it’s hard to tell just what problems you’re still having.===Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. September 03, 2006 02:59 PMShow Post Jerry PosnerJedi Knight Posted September 03, 2006 03:46 PMHide PostI posted the first one when just the Clarisworks icons were shot; then I had all the folders go batty and posted again with the different topic. The short answer is that I did nothing before the CW icons changed. Last night, I did open a CW file and use it, and all of the icons were just fine. Computer put to sleep for the night. I needed to go back to the file this morning, and found chaos.By the way, iCExcel was apparently installed (long ago) by MacLinkPlus according to an installer log. Before the rest of the folder icons went nuts, I tried changing a couple of the CW files by going into Get Info and changing the file to have CW open it, not iCExcel, and that’s when I got the funny icons on my CW files three types; I’m attaching a TextEdit doc with the regular CW icon and the two strange ones (I had gotten rid of the third one). And no, I’ve never used iCExcel and had not used MacLinkPlus to translate any document worked on for at least a month.Right now, I do not care to update to 10.4.7 since current system works and every update causes certain problems which I do not have time to deal with now.Yes, I did repair permissions – twice – with no effect; the only thing that helped to get the folder icons back to normal was a restart. Have you tried booting to safe mode as I suggested? It does several repairs to the disk.It says “padawan” because you have 67 posts. If you click on “go”then “personal zone” then “karma” you can see the different levels.===Professor Hubert Farnsworth: “Nothing is impossible. Not if you can imagine it. September 03, 2006 03:58 PMShow Post Jerry PosnerJedi Knight Posted September 03, 2006 04:03 PMHide PostThis is the first time I have had any problem with the system. Have not tried the safe mode yet, but nothing else appears amiss.Since I couldnt find a way to use Automater or other shortcut, I changed the icons the old fashioned way – took the copy of one folder with about 350 files off my old G4 and copied it back to the iMac and all icons were OK, and then changed a couple dozen icons using the cut and paste method. Strangely enough, when I had restarted, all of the subfolders in my CW file (other than the main window) which had had the iCExcel icons had reverted back to the correct icons. Chuck RetiJedi Council Member Posted September 04, 2006 10:57 PMHide PostiCExcel and iCWord are commercial programs from Panergy Software that allow viewing-only access to Excel and Word files. Not sure how or why it’s on your box unless it was part of a demo package or MacLink included it as a plugin to read Excel files. Since Clarisworks is a pretty old bit of software, assume you’re running it in Classic mode under OS X (?). Have you tried doing a Desktop Rebuild for Classic? To get there, go to System Preferences>System>Classi c, “Advanced” tab. At bottom of box is “Rebuild Classic Desktop.” Push the Button.Huge numbers of problems in OS 9 and earlier were solved by Rebuilding the Desktop, including oddball or missing icons and incorrect file associations. Worth a try, always a good maintenance procedure under Classic and Mac OS 9 on down. Posts: 884 | Location: Detroit | Registered: June 11, 2002
