Don’t forget all – Top Gear USA is back on UK screens with another double bill: this Friday, BBC Three, 7pm.

In the first episode, in celebration of America’s love of all things tough, the boys from across the pond attempt to crown the baddest heavy-duty pickup sold stateside, Tanner races a boat in the tough-looking Local Motors Rally Fighter and the tough-to-spell-his-last-name comedian Bill Engvall is the Big Star in a Small Car.

The best-selling vehicle in the United States is a Ford pickup, as it has been for the last 28 years. Trucks are as ‘Merican as Twinkie Pie and the citizenry’s relationship with them isn’t platonic – Americans love their pick-me-ups, and the ones they love the most are the biggest, baddest, longest, widest, heaviest, most chrome-addled Texas Cadillacs with the most leather and absolute worst fuel economy possible. Rutledge, Adam and Tanner each select their favorite 4X4 heavy-duty diesel offering from Chevrolet, Ram and Ford and head towards the high desert. These trucks have 2,215lb ft of torque among them, something like the energy potential of a small nuclear device. A number that big that requires big tests, big things to pull on and big lapses in judgment.

Tanner Foust gets his hands on the internet-designed Local Motors Rally Fighter and takes it deep into the swamps of Louisiana to find a location suitably inhospitable – and a machine wild enough – to challenge this truck-car-thing’s off-road prowess. If standing water, muck, and crocodiles weren’t enough, Tanner lines the Rally Fighter up against a boat powered by a very large and supercharged V8 that doesn’t seem to care much whether there’s water under it or not.

And in the follow-up, Adam, Rutledge and Tanner engage a different set of four-wheel drive transfer cases when they set out to find the best 4×4 five-thousand bucks will buy.

Rutledge scrounges up a Navy-tough Chevy Blazer, Adam a more modern and OJ Simpson-approved Ford Bronco and Tanner a trail-rated but very carburated Jeep CJ-7. The reputations of these 4x4s were forged on battlefields, desert racecourses and the toughest off-road trails found stateside. A tour through a state park should be a breeze then, right?

Death Valley holds a special and terrifying place for any person who has attempted to cross it in any vehicle without perfect reliability, robust build quality or air conditioning. Show up lacking any one of those three things and at best you will exit, if you exit, looking like beef jerky. What better place, then, to begin an epic journey in weathered vehicles that will wind through the mountains, dunes and rock-strewn trails of the Mojave desert en route to glitzy and glamourless Las Vegas.

What do you think?

The only reason I can think of why you Brits like this US version is because it just shows how ridiculous we Yanks are. It provides entertainment. Because we can’t think of tv programs on our own, we steal them and do parodies. And fail miserably at it. We’ll never learn. So ya’ll sit back with a couple brewskis, and give a big “HELL YEAH” for the three idiots who can’t hold a match to Jeremy, Richard and James.

As someone who’s already watched this episode I can say that this was easily one of their best episodes yet.

This show is really not all that bad when you look at it in perspective. No, it’s not UK Top Gear, and if you compare it like that it won’t hold a candle. but taken on its own merits, and compared to the slew of horrible US car shows that we’ve been subjected to, and it’s a great “entertainment” type of car show. stop comparing it to UK Top Gear and just enjoy it. what, would you rather watch “The Car Show” which has already been canned?

I love the fact that Tanner is seemingly obliged in his contract to do a burnout at the start of every single challenge/test. TGUSA is great, glad it is being shown on TV rather than a pixely video sharing website…

Yes, we do adapt programs from the UK, but its not stealing. Its the same f’ing producers who want to tap into the U.S. market because they want to make some money! So get a clue ryoko861.(example: the American version of the Office was produced by Ricky Gervais, did he “steal” his own show?)

@ ryoko861

i totally agree. if you are going to make a knockoff, at least make it good…. although this episode is not as bad as the others.

TG is great no matter who is from where in my book. They are unique because they cater to their own distinct fans in their own way and represent their own back grounds wonderfully. I love UK and USA versions. All the guys are remarkable and the shows are fantastic! My 2 year old prefers to watch Top Gear over Sesame Street any day!!! ROCK ON TOP GEAR!!!

I can hardly wait to be out that night!

This show is picking up steam. It’s good in its own way and shouldn’t be compared to the UK Top Gear. It’s an awesome show.

Awesome? No, it certainly isn’t awesome. The aw part does fit into awful, though. Can’t believe they find sponsors.

ryoko861, you are quite right, Top gear usa is a pitiful excuse for a show, go back to making bad sitcomes, at least you werent copying.

Judging TGUSA on its own merits and not comparing it to the original TG it’s fair to say that the show is worth a watch. The quality of filming in this series is noticeably improved from last year and the 3 hosts seemed to be a little more comfortable in their roles (not to say that changes couldn’t still be made). When we compare TGUSA with the UK version of TG then clearly it has a way to go to catch up. But we must always remember the Jason Dawe season and recognize that these shows are not constructed over night. Will TGUSA ever achieve the success of the original? Unlikely. However, I think it is reasonable to argue that it is developing into an ok motoring entertainment show. I just wish commenters would be more understanding in their remarks and not automatically dismiss the entire show just because its not as good as another show.

Oooh, wait till you see what the ZR-1 does to the 458… Heheheheh.
Anyway, despite being from the states myself, I do genuinely prefer the UK version over the US one, but I still enjoy the US version.
BTW, you’re just getting this NOW? We’re getting season 3 on the 14th next month. Here’s to hoping Season 3 will bring out a Saleen S7 or an old Vector, or another of our Mid Engined Exotics… Yeah… We have a few!!!
Oh, and fanboys, calm down. Your exuberance disgraces you.

I am absolutely delighted to hear there is a 3rd season of TGUSA.
I’m a Scottish female TGUK fan and I love the show! TGUSA gives TG fans (like me) extra TG entertainment, an American perspective on the automotive world and a look at some of the beautiful locations you can only find in the USA.
The cast of TGUSA is fantastic too, Adam Ferrara is my favourite New Yorker, everything he says and how he says it, has me in stitches, he’s hilarious!
Rutledge Wood (I dubbed Rutlybear) is absolutely adorable, I want to give him a hug. He has the right balance of clever, cute and cuddly and has always something interesting to say.
Finally, the legendary, Tanner Foust whose heart stopping driving skills speak volumes, not to mention his raw sex appeal. A desirable quality (from a female’s perspective) that is missing from the TGUK. Don’t get me wrong, I love TGUK! Hamster is cute, May highly intellectual and Clarkson is ridiculously funny but it’s great to see some new younger drivers behind the wheels of some great cars. So roll on the UK screening of TGUSA season 3! Probably have to wait a year before it comes on BBC3 (presently on season 2) but it will be worth the wait!

The Top Gear, USA gives us American’s a bad name with there stupid test they do. When compared to the real Top Gear, Its a flop! They don’t actually test anything but how ridiculious someone can look on tv. How is this still on cable tv? Atleast the brit’s actually test the cars and give you some results on performance. Who want’s to know if a truck can pull down a power poll? Well, I am sure there are some people, but you must do some real test. Unlike the ones that were shown. Like Jeremy says, How stupid.

The US version is so bad they shouldn’t be allowed to call it “Top Gear”. Maybe “Broken Transmission” would be a better title. US laws (and lawyers) make it impossible to say what they really think of most of these cars. The UK version is much wittier and interesting. Please do us poor yanks a favor and get the new episodes to BBC America faster!!

Lots of people complain that Top Gear US is awful but go back and watch some episodes from the first two seasons of Top Gear UK. They were pretty bland as well. Top Gear US will get better and in some ways that’s already started happening.

Season 2 was a big improvement, and since the “test track” is 10 minutes from my house, I’m going to support my homies. (and no, it’s not as awesome as TGUK, and I’m OK with that.) One of these seasons I will go be an audience member. Though I will be planning my next trip to the UK around the filming schedule in Guildford.

I’ve done the Death Valley route, it’s seriously beautiful and quite challenging driving. Go in winter, or you will die.

Note that when James May followed the same route in the Evoque he turned back and went around…

On that note: From the Striped Butte footage it’s obvious the TGUS guys made it up Goler, but I’d like to know what route May took. It’s a long way around, and if you don’t go up Goler I think you have to take the paved highway with all the German tourists. Or trespass on an Army Base. Not sure what dunes they filmed, but I’m assuming that May was along for the ride with the US crew?

I challenge the stig to get to travel around the world with the car you want, while Jeremy does around the world in a boat, a plane james, richard a bus (and to go from country to country do not give up the car, can go of another. Please reply
