Limousines were once associated with elegant arrivals and well-dressed clientele; now they usually carry sloppy-drunk teenagers and winners of radio contests. The hosts of Top Gear USA want to make limousines special again and think they can do better than the ubiquitous stretch Lincoln or lumbering Hummer. To prove the quality of their limousines, Adam, Tanner and Rut will ferry celebrities to the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards.
Tanner’s concern is singular: His limo must be able to do a burnout. His choice of a 1987 Corvette, made 35 feet long, means two things: despite appearances, Tanner must be old enough to be entering his midlife crisis, and that given the ‘Vette’s front engine, rear-wheel drive layout, he might be responsible for the longest performance driveshaft in history.
Rutledge, combining his love of underpowered, oil-burning Volkswagens and “creative” solutions, arrives with a Hydra-like beast with Rabbit cabs on both ends and a party deck in the middle. Being able to drive from either end could help him out in tight situations… or immensely complicate his life.
Adam, perhaps drawing on his Italian-American heritage, creates a limo fit for the pope himself, barring the bulletproof glass and tax-free status. His starting point is a 1969 Lincoln MK III, an admittedly safe choice. Considering the surgeon, the end result is alarmingly well-reasoned and crafted.
To test the agility of their creations, the boys drive one-quarter mile, whip around and race back. Simple, right? To test the occupant comfort of their limos, the hosts strap into the celebrity seats and are handed martini fixings. Mixing drinks would be easy if a certain white-suited chauffeur weren’t handed the keys.
If the hosts are to deliver their celebrities to the Emmys on time, they’ll have to negotiate Hollywood’s one-way streets and tight parking scenarios, so maneuverability is key. Rut, Adam and Tanner face an obstacle course that includes a parking test, parked car slalom, paparazzi to avoid/target and a tennis ball serving machine with remarkable aim.
When the big day arrives, Adam is assigned Oscar-winning comic legend Cloris Leachman, winner of more Emmys than any other performer. Tanner ferries a loud man who eagerly shares just what he thinks of the limo, Tanner, and his driving. Rutledge gets a beautiful and well-manicured lass – perfect, if only he weren’t driving perhaps the least elegant vehicle ever conceived.
Later in the show, actor Steven Moyer, of the Emmy-winning series True Blood, sits down for a chat with Rutledge. Despite an Adam-like propensity for destroying vehicles in real life and on his show, he attempts to channel this aggression into a physics-bending lap.

Ahh, don’t be such a bad sport. You’re entitled to your opinion just like everyone else. My response was – i’ll admit – a little too pointed, but I was only expressing my own thoughts. All of us reading and/or commentig on this site are TG fans. We all like – or dislike – the show for varying reasons.
TG is great. It isnt always perfect, and the team doesn’t always get it right – even they know that. But it’s still a great show. It can’t be easy to satisfy everyone in your audience – especially one as diverse as TG’s – and stay fresh and innovate, but still loyal to the original formula that people expect.

Well…I’ve watched three maybe four of these. I understand many of them are been there done that incarnations of real Top Gear. Two that I watched were uniquely American (pick up trucks and mini vans) but come on…the limo episode. That wasn’t even done very long ago on real Top Gear. I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and that said it is a good episode to imitate. I’ve been lucky enough to catch up on some good English programming via Netflix (Doc Martin, The IT Crowd) and its just proven some things should be left in their original form. Thank you BBC America!

TGUSA is like watching a 60 minute car commercial. I’m not saying that TGUK is consumer advice I would live by but it at least comes across as objective and honest. TGUSA just feels like I’m at a dealership and 3 salesman are trying to sell me a car. And would it be that hard to have done original stuff? Everything down to the hosts interaction has been copied, not just the challenges. the show could have been done so much better.

i not being a bad sport here.
just see wasted potential.
not all TGUSA fault.
i blame focus groups.
Everything in america is PC NOW.
that okay, but there should be allowed
certain show not to be PC.
TOP GEAR is one.
to e fair and balanced.
BBC needed the money
even low it shows worldwide,
made 1.2Billion pound profit.
The BBC is cash strapped.
due to the fact, that the Goverment
no longer pays for the World service.
So shows like, Top Gear paid for
the world service.
so when the History Channel
bought a licence for Top Gear.
it help fill the BBC coffers, and help
make other shows like Sherlock, torchwood
and all the other britishs shows, and gameshows
you bought licence for.
I alway like your shows as well.
Adam was good as needles nelson
in rescue me.
also liked the wire,24, nip tuck, sorpano, csi
lawand order and the underrated Alias.
It true we do have a special reltonship.
as we bought a license for Law and order
as well as other Amercian shows.
my problem with Amercian tv, is the focus group
who are they.
what experience do they have in tv, and who are they
to tell me what i like to watch.
I taped a programme from amercia, the guy was swearing
as he was angry, the tv station bleeped over it poorly.
as i could hear every swear word.
it make me angry that, if it part of a storyline
then allowed the swearing to happen.
Then say, this is part of a storyline if offended
sorry.
feeled let down by this, Pc police brigade.

on a car related matter.
why don’t Top Gear USA asked.
the National Automobile Museum
in Reno Nevada, to open a World of top gear section.
It might sound a little silly, but i read that the national
car musuem in the UK. has had more visitor since it
opened it Top Gear wing.
Has the Orginial, stretch limo, as well as Jezza
sport train, combinie harvester snow plough and
more.
kid will visited that part, and Dad can show him other
cars and keep up his love of cars.
Well done British car musuem, for reconising that
carscan be used for other means.
hope the American car musuem will follow suit.
and keep up America love of speed.

The biggest problem with this show is that these guys are just trying way to hard to create chemistry that just isn’t there. If they want to be successful they have to find a niche that allows their dialogue to just flow naturally instead of trying to manufacture it.

Absolutely hilarious. I’d go so far as to say it was better than the original “limo challenge”.

I’ll admit that TG US is not as funny as TG UK, but it is the American version of it. And when you go back and look at the early UK series when May joins the group, they chemistry is not there either. It took a while before they caught on and started playing to each others strengths and making fun of their weaknesses. It will take a while for Tanner, Adam, and Rut to do so as well. However, this season of TGUS has been better than the first two.
Oh, and somebody find Steve12 a real girlfriend. He was on a US show called Taboo a few months ago when they featured men who love plastic dolls.

When I first watched Top Gear, it was the US version and it was entertaining. Then, I watched the BBC version and was just amazed. Jeremy, James and Richard have such a great chemistry. Watching there interactions, and there wittiness, they way they descibe their rides and nothing seems to be teleprompted, which it seems to be for Top Gear US. Honestly, and I may get some flack from writing this, but I think the best thing t do is let Top Gear UK test and describe American Cars, it would be more informative an entertaining. Plus I would love to watch a Jeep, Rover, Hummer, FJ, and Xterra in a challenge.

For those who claim TGUSA will never attain the chemistry of TGUK, you’re absolutely correct. British chemistry is the result of eons of inbreeding, drinking and hatred of the lower classes. It’s really contempt. Plus inbreeding and binge drinking. The American hosts will never achieve British chemistry – thank God.

You shouldn’t put stuff like this on this website. Literal copies, including the cars built, of challenges only promotes the whole ‘they can’t think of anything new anymore’ craze.

@X1 Everyone on earth is an inbred. Without good transportation there was no real way around it in the past. Plus the ‘American’ that you describe doesn’t really exist, he is a descendant of the Brits (at least I suppose that eons is more than 200 years?).

I loved the girlfriend joke that matt.
did at my expense, good one mate.
i did not like the security joke, by pates350
asSecurity guards today work hard.
I spent three year at the local steelworks, as a guard
and the Security Supervisors were trained to use a
Defiltor.
in case any member of staff, had a heart problems.
Glad that Fabrice Mamuba is okay, he was only 23
year old when he collapsed on the Football pitch
on saturday.
Well done the medics, and london chest hospital
for saving his life.
on last night show. not bad effort boys.
8 out of ten.
the only part i did not like, was the actual celebrity
guest they hired.
it would have been more fun, if they had to take
E News to the Emmys.
They had to be their early, for the red carpet stuff
that no one cares about.
to see them suffer Adam driving, wood Nice shirt
collection and tanner charming personality.
A sequel that nearly as good, as the original
but still no Clarkson.
love him or hate him, he is mr Top Gear.
loved it whenJezza, got hit by the water cannon
worth the Licence fee alone, for that moment.

give the show time, TGUK didn’t start up so good it’s first 3 seasons. they canned the “fat guy” (no one really know his name), and replaced him with May. threw the 4 season, things started picking up and the chemistry improved. eventually it will pick up but nothing is better than the original.
and steve12, stfu. i can’t stand people like you who always despise on anything american. you are who you are, nothing but a worthless troll.

i did like the espiode last night.
my only problem with it, was the guest
booked.
to see the E news team, go through hell
to get to the Emmys.
would have made the show better.
they always happy, well dressed, never
had a go at for terrible fashion sense.
to see them suffer, like Chris Moyles
and Jeremy Clarkson did. would have
made my day.
I also give the show last night.
eight out of ten, love the Lincoln
limo.
Still James Saab/ Alfo limo, was the
best of the six.
It was so silly, seeing Lamarr driving
one half of the limo.
was a brillant idea.
made the show better for me, Hamster
hulimating Jamelia was a close second.
Jezza stretch Panda was awesome too.
to take a small family car, and stretch it
over fourty feet brillant.
TGUSA got it right with this espiode.
And i was wrong, i thought they screw
it up like Amercia does.
But i think the TGUK version is better.
mainly because Clarkson, get his fair
share of Abuse in this espiode.
I bet after all, Jezza said about Amercia
you loved seeing him. hit by the water
cannon.
As i said in the past, i like Amercia.
but you took Sherlock, from the BBC
and cast the Sexy Lucy Lu from charlie
angels as Watson.
that my problem, with amercia, Focus group
and PG13 television.
It not amercian, you give us Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor,
Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Whoppi Goldberg, and
Billy Crystal.
that the television, i want from Amercia, cutting edge
HBO at it best.

Good episode laughed throughout this episode, Also being filmed in California I didn’t think it was possible to get lost. I really liked the Pope Limo and would have loved to see it make it. Funny observation.. UK actor is fastest on the US show and a US actor is the fastest on the UK show. Not sure why by I kinda find that funny. Anyways I feel that The US show is very entertaining, but I wish it wasnt always just challenges. However Top Gear is better than no Top gear so I’ll take what they are giving me.

Steve12, I highly doubt you’re actually American, seeing as you can’t even spell it…
And for the record, what you write isn’t poetry, it’s just words strung together and badly broken apart.
TGUS isn’t bad for what it is, and the endless cheap car challenges are fun, but it’s starting to feel like no one actually cares about the cars any more, but just the drunken giggles you get when screwing around with them. Honestly, there hasn’t been a proper review for what, 2 seasons?

Gogmorgo
your right about my blogs, terrible spelling and being a
pompous ass.
just being the bad guy.
History Channel needed, to give them 60 minutes
guaranted.
As that the reason given, for no car reviews.
could get rid off Big star, Small car instead.
just putting out ideas, to improve TGUSA.
TGUSA should start at 8.45 instead of 9.00
that would give them. a full hour, and a chance
to do car review.
TGUK usually only review one car per show.
that take between 10 to 15 minutes, and still
can have the challenges.
Ask the History Channel, to give TGUSA that
extra 15 minutes.
And you would see more car reviews.
and also the specials, would be even
better.
