The Stig: The Untold Story

Sweet mother of NO WAY – the sensational truth about the Stig has been consigned to words, then to paper, then bound together in a hardback book. It’s called The Stig: The Untold Story, it’s out on October 25 and delves behind the visor of the man, the myth, the driver; the legend.

Award-winning biographer Simon du Beaumarche has spent a year chasing The Stig and talking to those closest to him including Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May and leading figures from Formula 1, music, movies and the military. What he discovered is an explosive story of intrigue, influence and a sensational conspiracy that seeks to hide the truth about one of the 21st century’s greatest icons.

Some say the Stig is an enigma wrapped in a mystery enveloped in a puzzle placed inside a box with an extremely complicated locking mechanism. He never speaks nor shows his face and what little we know about him comes from the comical lines used to introduce him on television. Simon du Beaumarche wanted to delve deeper and discover the truth about this intriguing character.

His year-long quest took him from Surrey to another part of Surrey to the very ends of Surrey and then, unexpectedly, to Finland before returning to Surrey. Along the way he unearthed remarkable information about the The Stig’s influence in areas as diverse as motorsport, international politics and the punk movement. He also got covered in a strange green substance.

With unprecedented access to former and current members of the Top Gear team as well as highly respected figures from the worlds of motorsport, music, movies and the arts, du Beaumarche builds up a fascinating picture of a highly complex man and reaches a remarkable conclusion with a truly intriguing twist.
