Tuesday’s Top Gear writing day was going rather swimmingly. Everyone was in a splendid mood and the script was coming together nicely. Buoyed by the high levels of bon and, quite possibly, homie, Jeremy was just making a small tweak to the main studio script on the screen when his face froze in a rictus [...]

As James said during that awards bit, it was a mad show this week. Some green stuff, a crashing caravan, a big motorsport birthday and the Welsh warbler himself on our track.

The Mole was freezing cold down in Surrey yesterday, but still got some behind-the-scenes gossip from the telly filming. The audience were wrapped up warm – even the Stig has some special earmuffs on – and braved the arctic freeze, huddling together in the Top Gear hanger like chilly penguins. Sort of.

There were a lot of surprises on today’s show, not least of which was James May doing a power test in a Zonda. It was a beautiful thing – and didn’t the car sound awesome? – with James doing a properly good job of testing it out, in his stripey jumper…

Jeremy’s meat grinding V8 powered smoothie maker didn’t go exactly according to plan on its first proper outing at rehearsal on Wednesday last week. He’d got in out of the van and forklifted in to the studio fine, and it all looked very impressive. Until he cranked it up.
